I felt both your hearts sink when you got the grinder on it. It's ok meteorite or not you learnt something and had fun, even some excitement for a little while.

Look up the chemical dimethylglyoxime. I ordered some and you just rub a swab on the suspected meteorite and if it contains nickel it turns pink. If the rock passes the color test and is magnetic it is worth sending to a lab for testing, which costs about $30.
Edit: Jewelery test kits for nickel content are an economical way to achieve the same results.

There are lots of black rocks on the railroad track that come from India and there are lots of man-made rocks making them stronger! They usually are all black having two square ends ballast! And I find some on the road that look like that but they come out from the tracks! They can be very magnetic coming out of my mine

I'd take it to a university and have it inspected. Pretty sure that's a meteorite.

I have one that’s almost completely non magnetic (it does attract a magnet super heavily at certain points others not) even though it’s not that big or super metallic it at least weights a pound or a more give or take. They are heavy period mostly metallic or not and they don’t usually produce streaks.

It's ore... the line you metal detected on use.to be a through route Cincy to Chicago. It was moved on this line til 1976 roughly...when traffic shifted. Just fyi. (I live by Muncie and worked for the railroad)

Really enjoyed how refreshing you guys are. Straight to the point and logical re: process of steps/deduction & elimination. So delightfully sans-waffle :) I'm off to Dremel a 'window' in a similarly enigmatic specimen!

Meteorite?.. Meteorwrong!.. Lol.. I'm no expert in meteorites, but where I detect we have a couple of thousands of years metalworking history and I know the odds are that its some sort of ore.. Some types can be a pain in the ass but ore fits into the 'hot rocks, slag and coke' bracket as far as I'm concerned :-)
    Good informative vid

You can get some further testing done by the University Extension people. Call the University and they'll give you the number. It's always fun but it looks like you've got something man made. Good for you for fact checking. We need more of that.

... I thought seeing it that it was definitely going to be a Meteorite! But it's good to see objective testing/experiments settling the question. Many people don't bother and just prefer to kid themselves without knowing for sure!!

It can be a stone meteorite.... And you have to saw cut it in half... And high polish it... You will see a strange melecular patterns... It's of my opinion that you probably got some debri from the rail road cars hauling off factory smelting debris... But absolutely there are stone meteorites tho...

Hey Anychance you could tell me if I have meteorites or meteorwrongs? I have a bunch of stones I collected, I seen a fireball go out above my house I heard the sonic boom as well after mapping out a 25km radius I found a couple rocks that look like pallasite meteorites but I don't want to take them to the university here I've been waiting 2 months for some I already have taken in and after doing research on how much meteorites are worth I don't want to take these in

If mine streak black, then they are meteorites. Some do not streak black, but almost all do. See Meteorite Men on utube. . I think you have a meteorite. . The metal inside is not black. Only the crust on some are black. Topherspin is a site that sells, but the education on meteorites is free. Wish you luck and keep hunting....

if it was found on or near a railroad track no I have found rocks like that it is not very magnetic but it is silver looking on the inside earth material have many meteorites but think if it barely sticks to a magnet it is not going to have enough iron to set off a metal detector

Wow. Hey you been reading it wrong, It's a real meteorite. Who said it brown streak? congrats you found yourself a meteorite, now to prove more cut the rock half and see what the color inside, if it match the outside color, it's not, you have founded a Achondrite Meteorite. And if I was not wrong, I actually own a similar one like that but smaller size. For the Window test the girl is actually wrong. So congrats!
