Jim Marshall said that coach Van Brocklin did not actually get mad at him after this play. He said Van Brocklin told him the game had been very boring up until that point, and he was the only player who did anything interesting !
I came here after reading a book with a title, "Mindset". This is really so epic and devastating at the same time. But, I like how he reacted on the situation. Accordingly he said, "If you make mistake, you got to make it right. I realized I had a choice. I could sit in my misery or I could do something about it". Hands down for him!!!
Only Brett Favre (321) has more consecutive NFL starts than Jim Marshall (289). Marshall played for 15 more seasons after his wrong way run, but that is what he is remembered for. It probably cost him joining fellow Viking defensive linemen Alan Page and Carl Eller in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. That's a huge impact for a play that did not even impact the outcome of he game, which the Vikings won.
I doubt very seriously that this one play is the reason he isn't enshrined in Canton. More so the 4 Super Bowl losses is a reason. He should be in Canton.
Roz Smith actually it was 13 bro then went to the 49ers as a line backer coach for 7 years, said he didnt like cuz the playas was hard headed lol , afta dat he left the nfl for good, he's 75 now and still look like he can play football nbs ,real nice an humble dude!
Sad thing is, he was a helluva player, and yet is mostly remembered for that. That's got to be a ball buster. And the Vikings won that game anyway so it wasn't even that consequential. Unlike the missed grounder by Bill Buckner in the world series. And Buckner was a helluva player too.
I noticed for the first time that he had a slight stumble as he picked up the ball which started him towards his own goal and he never corrected his bearings. It is funny to see him fling the ball away in jubilee, then he finally sees the error of his way. Fortunately, the ball went out of play, making it a safety. If he leaves the ball in the end zone, and the 49ers recover, it's a TD. That is a difference of 5 points, the same difference that the Vikings won the game by.
@:16 His man immediately turns around ready to block for him too! 😂 Imagine Marshall celebrating after giving up 2 points like the lame ducks these days...LMAO!🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 #Wild🤪
seeing this play pop up everywhere as the worst play makes me angry that was 50 years ago lets see something more recent remember that one time the packers were down 31 23 to the bucs in the forth quter with the clock winding down aaron rodgers threw a stupid pass to make it 4th and goal and 1000 IQ Matt LaFleur put the kicker out for a feild goal and geuss what they lost BUT guess who didnt lose JIM MARSHAL the vikings won 27-22 that day so ha they had a more embarrsing play and you didnt even win
He thought that by 50 years people would forget...
He was wrong.
lolololololol
K-Team Sports so sad
He's still alive. 79 years old. I wonder how often he thinks of this now.
SpungeBawb 💀💀💀
Vikings still won the game. I don't think he cares that much...If it cost them the game or even the playoffs then I could see it haunting him.

Hahaha
Game. To encourage him. Slick tho...😂
Greatest play in NFL history.
And funniest.
Hell no. It's in my top 5 though

I also came here after reading the same book.
OMG yes! same :)
Jim Marshall: Boy was it easy to get into the endzone.
This needs more attention.
Marshall got a letter afterwards from Roy (Wrong Way) Riegels saying Welcome to the Club. Marshall's was in 64, not 65.

Marshall should be in the HoF
Hell no fuck that nigga!
+batman91500 he was great he set the tone and he's what Reggie white and Bruce Smith wanted to be
Captain Spartan 04 Well he should be in the hall of fame then. But, he's not so!
***** a lot people should be in the Hall of fame that aren't but he's one of the top
Captain Spartan 04 yeah. You're right about that
It was 1964...60 years ago today.
Damn, poor guy
The celebration is what does it for me.
Hello cognizant employees...
LOL
Yup boy
God love Jim Marshall. What a good sport about it.
The ball was deflated
He may be a hall of famer if he didn’t do this
The call is the best part.

He thinks he has scored a touchdown, he has scored a safety!
Lol I pick jim marshal up today from a hospital appointment, cool dude stays in wisconsin now!
That's what football concussions do to ya, one day you're picking 6ix the next you don't know how to brush ya damn teeth lol
Poor guy should be a hall of famer but how funny would it have been if he started high stepping into the end zone and then did a dance.
Sick of the excessive commercials on youtube. No wonder why people 'cheat' them by downloading videos, it's getting excessive here.
what's really messed up is he got HOF stats but because of this play he might not get in for like a another 10 or 15 years
This happened during the 1964 season.
Fun fact. This is where the Vikings “Skol” chant originated.
I don't blame him I wouldn't be thinking at all if I got a fumble recovery in the NFL I would just be running away from everyone
Jim Marshall should at least be in the Bizarro NFL HOF considering his run-back for a safety.
The day is October 25, 1964, not 1965 , correct that right now
Is this the play that is keeping him out of the Hall of Fame?
you got the wrong year it was 1964
I was just going to mention that myself. 1964 was the correct year.
Its what CTE will do you lol
Malt Liquor!
When I saw this, I was almost sure he was dead, I can't believe this guy is alive
still better than Seahawks not running the ball
he had an awesome career though
You have the wrong year for the wrong way run. It was 1964
Poor Jim.
Is this actual play commentary at the time or was this dubbed in later?
Lone Simmons radio commentator for the 49ers. This was against the 49ers in Kezar Stadium, San Francisco, 1964.
What it might take for us to see a 1 point safety
Sure they got the right year?I've heard 1964.
1964 was the correct year.
It was October 25, 1964
Vikings Forgot To Get Directions to The Right Direction!!!!!!!
This fumble return was in 1964 (not 1965)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈
LMAO damn!
*Oh no starts playing
poor dude ...
It was 1964! Not 1965
So stupid! Can't imagine how much he got yelled at after that game!
not even worth yelling at, just sent him home without a word
Recent News they still won the game. And I’d take him over that dummy Leon Lett any day.
His team won. He didn't get yelled at. His coach had a sense of humor about it. Leon Lett actually cost his team the game with his famous gaffe.
Congratulations u played yourself
Who is here because of the book “mind set”
wouldn't the fans, players and coach be telling him?
The fans were so loud, yelling at him that he's going the wrong way, he couldn't make out what they were saying
He was on the visiting team, so I doubt the fans gave him any warning.
1964, not 1965.
The horrors D:
@:16 His man immediately turns around ready to block for him too!
😂 Imagine Marshall celebrating after giving up 2 points like the lame ducks these days...LMAO!🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Bruh...........
At least he can use head trauma as an excuse
Might even be true.
