this was shot in the Austrian Alps. Home Free was there to perform at a festival. They fell in love with the scenery and flew in their video team to do this. :) thank you for your reaction. Yes, when Tim sings Chance takes over the bass line and Adam Rupp is normally their beatboxer but sings tenor here. He rarely sings a solo part--his choice. He doesn't feel comfortable singing. Austin sings the highest.

Just a clarification on the “It Is Well” backstory - The slave story was actually the writer of “Amazing Grace.” The writer of “It Is Well” wrote his song after a shipwreck his wife and children were on, and the wife alone survived - all his children died. And that was after having already lost another son and his house to a fire.

As the story further goes, this was 1873 and Horatio G Spafford was on his way to get his wife and bring her back home after the tragedy and was aboard ship, and wrote the song after the captain told him at the spot the other ship had gone down and where his daughters had died.

They were in Austria for a festival and decided that it was so beautiful that they needed to film here. They actually got ahold of their film crew and had them come over. They have a From the Vault video about this song. Chance beard mustache is actually a bass but he sings baritone for the group unless Tim has a lead. Austin is actually the sky high tenor. Overalls (Rob) is the lead tenor lower (2 tenor). Adam Rupp has a voice range like Rob, but he doesn't sing solo very often. This is an absolutely beautiful song. Enjoyed watching your reactions to this song.

All harmonies no beatboxing In this one
This was done in the Swiss Alps when they were over there at a festival. Most of their crew was not there they saw this and said we have to record this song and called their crew. Everyone flew there to record this it was done with a drone(s)
They had this one in their back pocket waiting for the perfect place to do a video. I do believe they found it .

You have them correct and Adam chance (aka chance) does take over the bass when Tim has the lead. Tim and Chance go back and forth in some songs on the bass and then (like in this one) they hit you with the double bass and just blow you away.

Austin is the high tenor, Rob (overalls) is the lead tenor, Tim is the deep bass, but can go up to tenor, Chance is the baritone, and does bass when Tim is singing the vocals, and Adam Rupp is the freak-of-nature beatboxer. Of course, you've already seen they don't always stick to those 'roles' and it's impressive to see Rob and Austin trade off and blend on the tenor parts, but Chance seamlessly takes over the backing bass when Tim takes over the vocals and it amazes me every single time. The teaser at the end is a cover of "My Church" by Maren Morris, and YES watch that one too. You guys are **almost** ready to watch "Mayday." Knowing their normal roles, it will BLOW YOUR MIND. Yep, Chance does the bass when Tim is singing lead. Adam Rupp has a great tenor voice but he prefers to beat box. The really high tones you hear in the background when Austin is singing lead come from Adam. They have a "Behind the Scenes" about the making of this video & you can hear some of the singing. From what I've read, they end many of their concerts with this song - and they do it without mics. I'm supposed to see them in October so maybe I'll find out for myself. I've heard this one dozens of times & I always get goose bumps! The teaser was "My Church" - one of my favorites. Another really nice one, IMO, is "In the Blood". I’d love to have you react to “Blue Ain’t Your Color”. I know someone will also suggest “All About That Bass” BUT you need to do the outtakes with that one, also. A Two-fer. Thanks for this reaction. "How great Thou art" - originally from a Swedish hymn by Carl Boberg set to the tune we know which is based on a Swedish traditional melody. The words were translated into German and Russian. It was translated into English from the Russian version by a missionary from England, Stuart K. Hine, his version we know so well dates from as recently as 1949...
"It is well" - two stories mixed were up. The author Horatio Spafford was a businessman from Chicago who lost a lot in the great fire of 1871. He supported D L Moody and sent his family ahead by ship across the Atlantic to help with a mission in the UK, intending to follow later. The ship sunk after a collision at sea and all four daughters died but his wife survived, sending a telegram "Saved alone". (The slave trader turned hymn writer was John Newton of "Amazing grace" fame from an earlier generation in the UK).
This recording by Home Free is one of my favourites. Thanks for taking the time to listen and share your reactions.

Do you know how many times I've watched this performance? I still get chills. One of their live shows got rained out and they hunkered down under cover with some of their fans. One of their fans recorded HF performing this without mikes. Still sounded so good even in the rain recorded on a phone.

It's in my Will that this song and in particular this version is to be played at my memorial service at the very end. I wake up every morning to listening to this, to start my day off ! They filmed this in the Alps region of Austria with a drone. They were there for a music conference

Haven't read through all the comments yet, but did you realize the "it is well" was sung by the beatboxer, Adam Rupp? One of the few times he sings lead and we can hear his beautiful tenor voice!
Another great, in-depth reaction! Thanks, guys!

You think the headphones are a game-changer (and they are!) but to see them LIVE --- Dudes, it's an experience!!!! Oh, and the teaser was "My Church" (Marin Morris). There is a video on the making of this "How Great Thou Art" on their channel. Now, with that being said --- get this .... there are like 9 different vids here on the tube of a HF performance that got blanked by a storm, taking out the performance. However, HF performed this song without mics .... it is absolutely awesome!!!!

The way you describe Tim's bass as a rumble of distant thunder, it is so accurate... rather than frightening, it is comforting in a great way. It was also wonderful to hear about your grandfather's band. All the best to you both!
P.S. GET IT RUPP!! He KILLS it on "then sings my soul"

Correct--when Tim is singing, Adam Chance--a baritone--takes over the bass. Adam Rupp (beat boxer) is a tenor.

You are correct....Adam Chance is a baritone but he is so versatile that he can produce the same 5 octave scale that Tim Foust sings.

(aka) DJ Whisper ~ The story you told about the slave ship is told by this man in such a way that your goosebumps will have goosebumps!! His name is Wintley Phipps. He tells the story in a lead up to him singing Amazing Grace. Please take the time to react to that video. I can't go through every post here so I don't know if someone has already passed on this information. Home Free - From the Vault - Episode 8 shows the behind the scenes of filming this video. These guys and their crew can be moving and beautiful and serious on moment, then goofy and funny the next. And yes, they are in Austria. The From the Vault series is a lot of fun to watch over and over. The latest one -- Episode 15 -- was dropped August 1, so hopefully #16 will come out in a couple weeks.

Love your reactions and knowledge guys! You have to hear them do this live - you can see more who is singing what. Chance does a lot of the bass with Tim, and also covers it when Tim is singing tenor harmonies! Check out a concert version uploaded by Russell Wolff Productions 🙂

The teaser is "My Church." In this, Austin carries the third verse and, in this arrangement, Rob ("Overalls" who is normally the tenor 2 {I think Adam Rupp also sings tenor 2?}) is indeed higher in his harmony than several of Austin's notes as the lead, even though Austin is typically tenor 1. And you were right: Chance sings bass when Tim takes lead.
The scenery. New Zealand? Oh, sooooo close but 1/2 a world away in the Alps of Austria.

Yes. Chris Rupp (Adam's brother) was the backup bass. When he left, he was replaced by Adam Chance, who has the same role. You can hear Chance clearly hit a low note or two in "Mayday."

You were talking about them singing to their studio track and what it would sound like to be there live. They have behind the scenes videos making some of their songs and they all look serious but live one of them will be singing WAY off key to try to get the others to laugh. I have a feeling their video shoots are a lot of fun. Even their no music videos are entertaining like one where Tim, who is from Texas, visits Adam Rupps family in Minnesota and he is freezing the whole time. You should check those out personally if not on the channel.
