Cross country or “Nordic” skiing appeals to a broad range of ages, skills and fitness levels. From walking on skis to full body sprinting Nordic skiing is considered by many the best exercise for cardiovascular fitness.
The following trails are groomed for the classic style “tracks” with wide skate lane.
Before you go be sure to purchase a sno parks season pass with groomed trails sticker for display in your dash at any of the Washington Snow Park Parking areas.
With the John Wayne Pioneer Iron horse trail nearly connecting all the groomed Nordic Ski trails on the Snoqualmie Pass I90 corridor.
Here are our selections from west to east.
1. The Summit at Snoqualmie Nordic boasts 50 kilometers of cross-country ski trails at the flanks of Hyak Peak and Mount Catherine.
The upper trails can be reached by the East Peak Chair lift or the Silver Fir Chair. Your full day trail ticket will get you two lift rides per day. Descend to the lower trails via Mount Catherine Loop or Hidden Valley Trail.
2. The flat grade and spectacular views through tight corridors and open vistas across Keechelus lake make Hyak a trail you will want to return to time and time again.
3. For kid and special needs friendly trails, check out the Erling Stordahl Ski Trails at Crystal Springs Trollhaugen. Home base for the Mountaineers Meany Lodge and Sons of Norway. This Sno Park features short easy to navigate loops in the forest and along mosquito creek.
4. From the parking lot carry skis over I90 to the north Cabin Creek ski trails maintained by the Kongsberger ski club. These popular trails have 16k of some of the best groomed tracks on Snoqualmie pass and feature a handful of citizen races during the ski season. Warm up on the gentle grade out and back “road” trail. The more adventurous can veer off the main road trail try their skills on the Viking-Berg Loop Featuring the steep and twisty Mt Osbaldy. Or make the climb to the east. Tucked between the long lake Keechelus and Little Kachess Lakes Mt Amabilis rises to form a clear ridgeline above Interstate 90 with views of Mount Rainier and the central Cascades. Better conditions at this elevation make for a longer season and a long downhill ride back.
5. Lake Easton Sno-Park at the far east side of Snoqualmie pass has 5 kilometers of mellow ski trails that roll through the woods and along Lake Easton and Yakima River offering up scenic overlooks on the way to and Frozen Toe Point.

I found the snow at Snoqualmie to usually be wet and heavy. Fast skiing on groomed trails, of course. Bring no-wax skis because it is difficult to wax for these conditions.

Warmer wetter snow that is typical for the area lends itself better to skating on groomed trails. The standard glide wax for skate skiing Snoqualmie pass is red. Some have luck using classic zero skis as well as waxless.
