It’s so great to hear someone talk about energy and routine! I’ve been thinking there’s something wrong with my because I can’t get myself to work 9-5 and rest outside that time. Sometimes I get so passionate I work on something from when I wake up to when I fall asleep and I do that so many days in a row and then I take more rest days. I think I do need to just find a way to make that work for me and not fit into a routine that’s not right for me.
Thanks for the video Mimi. Yes, I'm juggling a lot of things: Writing a Fantasybook, posting daily illustrations on IG, studying Graphic-Design, being a Mom, being a Wife, being a housewife, having a garden... But it's so worth doing all these things. They make the day shine brighter. 😊
YESS!! I totally relate to this! I am exactly the same way and am soooo grateful I have found your page!!! Although we haven't communicated personally, it is just such a relief to know someone else out there functions like me!!!
Thank you Mimi, I am in the process of looking for a job and trying to create an art profile and keeping my doll repaint up. Sometimes I do feel overwhelmed. I have learned that I need to stop pushing hard and work with the flow and take the day as it goes. Your videos has helped me with making sure to look after myself and more effectively getting things done . I really appreciate this so much
Watching this at a perfect time! I feel like the “hustle life” has been so ingrained nowadays that pushing content endlessly has been the standard. I am similar with you where I try to do so many things all at once- full time job, starting 2 different small biz, being a paw parent for the first time and preparing for our wedding. It. Is. Just. Crazy. I am so thankful to have found you online because your values are the same ones I want to live by. Excited to see more of your journey- shout out from Sydney! 🥰
This video hits home. Thanks for sharing 💜 Sometimes is hard to remember that we are actually doing a lot and deserve a breather. I know this happens to me a lot, especially dealing with a lot a chronic health conditions.
I do relate to your point about working in cycles! Yes! That is a 100% me too! This video topic is very synchronistic for me because the last two weeks were just all over the place for me, so this was very helpful to watch to get me thinking about how I can better juggle my priorities for the rest of this month! Thank you! 💖
I find myself thinking about my art projects and career dreams pretty much 24/7 as I'm quite desperate to start earning some money from my creativity but this situation is not healthy in the long run so I'm trying to "switch off" at least one day during the weekend. On Sunday evenings when my husband gets Monday blues, I find myself rejoicing instead - yes, I'll get to be in my studio and be painting again! And then when I'm painting, I find myself getting anxious about how I'm going to sell my original art. At least for me, there seems to be more questions than answers about setting up an art career therefore I really appreciate your videos and the knowledge + experience that you share ♥️🌸🌺
I loved your approach to every point you made. I felt you gave spot-on advice. My energy definitely fluctuates and yes, I can definitely take on too much. Hyperfocus, anyone? I'm currently juggling back-to-homeschooling seven of my children, working, coordinating some big home repairs, a website redesign, growing as an artist, musician, & more. If things get too stressful, I remind myself that I can make a fresh start any time of day. When I'm struggling, stepping away for even a quick break, or switching to a different type of task can really help. Lately there is a strong correlation between more "steps"/physical activity and better days: getting out for sun exposure in the AM is a plus. I will watch this video again & take notes. Seriously great job!
One year late but it is really useful for me! I'm also a cycle person. Because of that, I tend to feel anxious about the fact that I'm not strong enough, or I'm too slow, or too easily stressed. My dream is to be a self employed artist and be able to manage how and when I work, but the way to that is very hard
I've only recently started devoting at least one full day to my new art business and I wasn't expecting it to feel so much like an actual job! Not in a bad way, I mean! But it makes it difficult to wind down afterwards and even stop working. Thanks for this video!
As usual I love the way you present your topics visually. It is so easy to follow because you always choose fitting footage and show your points written on screen in between. Also your videos are so well structured, love it :) I think it is really great that you also mention that there is no competition in how much anyone has on their plate, because that is way too often the impression you have when people speak about all their tasks instead of sharing how they manage them. I do relate to the cyclic nature of ones energy, but I also believe that this is actually the case with most people. The degree of how high the high energy phases are or how low the lows are, will depend on the person but I would think there are not very many people who actually have a very constant energy level.
I definitely have a seasonal flow to my creativity and energy. I realised a while ago that I have phases in what I feel like doing and cycle through playing games, reading books or creating (crochet or drawing). During the day I try to get the big things done first (eat the frog analogy) but sometimes just need to build up by starting with the easy wins first and then might end up working in the evening if I'm in the flow. Even when I was working 9-5 I would have low energy tasks like organising or replying to emails and high energy (teaching) and try to balance where I could. I think this responsive way of listening to your body and needs is best in the long term for productivity. :) Fantastic tips :) Fellow chronic overcommitter here too. I'm juggling making and producing videos, a blog, a new club, and trying to create and sell my art while currently recovering from a neck injury and house-sitting.
I think my energy makes me change my schedule a bit ^w^ sometimes i prefer to draw first before doing my other tasks, but right now I am studying first thing in the day and drawing comes much later! im juggling studying novelwriting drawing poetry and journaling
Absolutely! When I am in full-on art mood and also working a different job, then I go in two week cycles. One weekend all art all day, the next weekend self care with little art progress, if any. Also in my life all my life I have gone in seasons of full focus on art & times where there is no art and more travel or other adventures. They usually toggle on and off every few years, but in the end I always come back to art. So I can totally relate!
I'm currently juggling: -Volunteeribg for an org. -Trying to get employed by said org. because I do way too much labor for free. -Study animation full time (I'm on my last year of the bachelor and will spend the year making an animation project). -Start posting videos on TH-cam. (I have some animatics and SpeedPaint but would like to make more vlogs and advice videos where I speak and show my face.) -Post consistently on my animation Instagram. -Get animation clients -Clean and cook each day for me and my partner. -Upkeep my social life. -Plan and attend events. -Remember to take care of myself. -Sleep enough, but usually oversleep (I tend to sleep around 12hrs) due to a bit effect to my medicine. All this while being mentally ill feels like a lot x.x then ofc I go ahead and tell myself I don't do enough :v
That is definitely a LOT to be juggling! You're doing so much so try and remind yourself how much you're achieving every day, even if it doesn't seem like it at the time because there are still things left to do 🥰
I have the same experience with my art. I can be painting for days on end with no trouble and then i have mild burnout and need to take a break. Or rather make myself take a break. LoL.
I constantly worry about how I am going to get everything done and wonder how does everyone else seem to do it all? Work, parenting, chores, self-care, being social?! Then I make myself feel bad when I can’t get it all done. And nothing gets done. But hearing your process and methods was super helpful. I will try the merry-go-round approach on my to-do list because lately planning out chunks of time has not been working. Inevitably other non-planned things come up, too. And I need to say no more. No is yes to something else. I am a freelance graphic designer working part time for a community college while looking for other contract work, aspiring to sell my illustrations and patterns on a platform like Creative Market, and I have a partner but we don’t live together all the time and have four kids between us. I also have ADHD, recently diagnosed, so I’ve been learning a lot about that, too. Prioritizing self-care can be a struggle. And I just dim the lights when the house gets too messy 🤷♀️
Excellent Video! Life and nature are cyclical by design, and developing an awareness of one's energetic cycles in relation to nature's, planetary and universal cycles can be a huge boon to one's balance and vitality!
When my money runs low, I feel like it completely tanks my positivity. Then my creativity is gone. Then I'll take a job for the money and have all my time used up, but then I get an overwhelming desire to create.
You really inspired me to try and learn more art, advance my skills and maybe someday I will be able to progress into some work around my art passion. Thank you ❤
Relate to the ENERGY we need to exert in each of the tasks / content. 🙂🙂🙂 This is such a nice video to remind even if we have so much in our plate we still have to prioritise. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for this video! I certainly feel the cyclical nature of energy you mention in the beginning. Being able to work with and not against helps me feel more balanced and satisfied with my "work". I'm juggling lots of things as my art business is still a hobby. I provide elder care for my mother, homeschool my kids, practice & teach karate for my health and a little income. And cook and clean and and and. It never seems like a lot until I list it out. One thing that has helped a lot recently is taking an art break on the weekend. I switch over to sewing or creating something just for fun. Thanks again! ❤️💛💙
That's certainly a lot of things to juggle, not just logistically but also emotionally ❤️ Love that you're taking an art break on the weekend, that's a great idea!
yes, I have an energy cycle thats for sure. I have always been like that. There are also definitely different times of the day I am more productive than others. T x
I totally relate to the energy cycles thing! Thank you for bringing it up. I feel like the common advice is to create a schedule and stick to it, but that never seems to work for me. I need some chaos!!! 😝
Love this video! I definitely have periods of super high energy where I want to conquer the world and then go down to a lethargic mood. I’m convinced it’s got something to do with hormones! Now I’m just trying to work on 1 project at at time up to completion and have just 1 task on my plate per day so I can easily feel proud of my accomplishments and not feel so discourage about the mountain of stuff I want to get done. One day at a time is what I keep telling myself 🥹
You're definitely not alone when it comes to your energy and working in cycles! There are a few project management systems that focus on energy management and not time management. I'm also so much more productive if I base my schedule on my energy levels and not only on the 9-5 rule ☺️
learning to say nope when something comes up is so important to learn how to do. life is way too short to say yes to everything, trying new things is good when you can
I'm juggling looking for a full time job after being 2 years out of school and redoing my portfolio to be smaller and more graphic design focused. i've been told by potential employers that the one I have now is really good as it showcases a wide range of work (graphic design, illustration, and 3d modeling), but I feel like a lot of the jobs I've applied to don't care about that and want to see raw graphic design skills. So I'm designing things based off of fictional client briefs + making my own branding based on media that I like. I do also want to start an art business as I love illustrating more than anything so I'm trying to find time to post on social media again. Doing all of that + making sure my wrist doesn't snap is quite challenging🙃
Looking for a full-time job is a big task! I agree that making your portfolio more focused could be helpful, and if you make it based on the kind of design you'd like to be doing then I think you're more likely to get a job that suits that style. Wishing you lots of luck in your job search!
I REALLY love your videos!! I just recently discovered you as I have just taken up drawing and sketching. I LOVE it but don't know how to do it ....yet..lol.I'm being kind to myself and taking it one day at a time. I have a sketch book and a tablet. I'm looking forward to when you offer your digital drawing beginning course ( you had mentioned offering something like that in one of your other videos). Is that something you're still planning on doing? If so, you have your first client..:)
Again another fantastic and informative video Mimi!! I'm the same in the sense that I definitely have to make a list of tasks and projects. If I don't I can get very overwhelmed! I truly am grateful that I am able to paint for the majority of the week in between a few work shifts and I feel any task I enjoy which is lovely. I juggle paintings on canvases, mini paintings and sketches most of the time. And when I'm hoping to also sort a project I'd like to work on as well. Thank you so much again for sharing all your experience and advice! And yes I must take more breaks as I am guilty of getting a bit carried away 😅❤️ ~ Rachel x
