Planting a Butterfly Garden - Family Plot

  • TSU Extension Agent Joellen Dimond plants a butterfly garden and explains why she picked the plants she is planting. She also makes a place for the butterflies to get water and sun themselves.
    Joellen has picked a combination of perennials and annuals. Some are useful to the adult butterfly and some are eaten by the larvae. All of them have bright colored flowers which attract the butterflies. Also, all the plants have the same growing requirements: full sun and drier conditions. Joellen also plants some herbs that the butterflies will like.
    A list of plants Joellen used and the layout are available at www.familyplot...

    Plants that are native to your particular area are always best.

      I don’t know why she didn’t call it by it’s common name, the “only” plant Monarchs require is milkweed (local milkweed species are best.) Also, those “late-blooming purple asters” are called “New England asters” -though they have a very wide range. Really surprised she didn’t mention a standard perennial used in nearly ALL butterfly gardens, the “Buddleja” aka; “Butterfly Bush” (try getting a local species.) Also, swallowtails love dill and parsley the most, all the other herbs are incidental.

    After I murdered four caterpillars that were munching on my parsley, I decided to do some research and discovered they grow into swallowtail butterflies. I was horrified by what I had just done! I immediately went to Amazon and ordered a butterfly "house" for raising caterpillars. I am now researching planting a butterfly garden, and am so happy to find your video, which addresses the many stages of a butterfly's life. I have made a list of all the plants you have mentioned and will ensure they are suitable for my area before planting, however I will be SURE to include lots of parsley and milkweed. I did not realize until doing my butterfly research that the Monarchs are on the endangered list, and you can actually order the caterpillars online to raise and free, provided you have plenty of milkweed, which comes in many beautiful varieties. Thank you so much for your information.

    Good job with the garden of this size. For those who get hooked on pollinator gardening, plant 3 plants of each flower in bigger beds. Pollinators like to stick with a grouping of one type of flower and then move on.

    FYI - Asclepius (milkweed) attracts lots of insects, not just monarchs, and many of those insects prey on monarch eggs, monarch caterpillars & monarch crysalis. So when you plant asclepias, you’re going to attract lots of insects that will kill your monarch eggs/caterpillars/chrysalides. It’s the cycle of life that nobody explains when they tell you to plant milkweed. Don’t expect 90% of those monarchs to become butterflies unless you are an intensive monarch-raiser, meaning you have to take the leaves off the plant as soon as eggs are laid, bring the leaves indoors & put them inside a butterfly cage. The best time for monarchs to become butterflies is the end of summer/early fall because there are fewer insects around that prey on your eggs, caterpillars & chrysalides. PS - one of my worst monarch marauders was the praying mantis. The mantids hid in my butterfly bushes & killed the monarchs once they became butterflies. Praying mantises love to eat the bodies of the butterflies. If you notice pairs of butterfly wings on the ground but no butterfly body, you’ve got praying mantises hiding in your foliage. That was a very big surprise for me.

    This is a great video. But just as a gentle cautionary, if you plant butterfly weed, three plants won't be enough. We planted three plants last year in our garden in the spring and by late August, a monarch butterfly laid her eggs on them. We had literally dozens of hungry caterpillars and they ate up all of our milkweed before we could feed them all. I had to rehome many to friends I knew had extra milkweed, lol. Plus, the more you plant, the more caterpillars you will have. This coming year, I plan to grow extra milkweed in my sunroom in pots to have on hand for extra food. :)

    Why the sand in the water dish?

    • @FamilyPlotGarden
      @FamilyPlotGarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The sand is helping to make the water accessible to the butterflies. The butterflies need to be able to reach the water but drowned in the water. Thanks.

    What size was that garden? How deep was it? What type of dirt was used?

    • @FamilyPlotGarden
      @FamilyPlotGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is 4'x8' and about 18" deep. For soil to fill it we used 50% compost and 50% screened soil (native top soil) Here is a video about how we built it: th-cam.com/video/GUccNSnyE5Y/w-d-xo.html

      Hummingbirds are going to like the same nectar plants as butterflies. It's the bees that like a larger, flatter flower that has a big center.

    How often would I need to water this?

    • @FamilyPlotGarden
      @FamilyPlotGarden  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The plants Joellen used are drought tolerant. Last summer we only watered it a few times when it has not rained in a week or two. Here is a video about when we let it go too long: th-cam.com/video/jLWDkOmW3x8/w-d-xo.html. In this case it had probably been without water for three weeks or so in the heat of summer (90 degrees or more every day) in a raised bed, so very dry.

      @@FamilyPlotGarden It's reassuring to know that all I need in 32 sf of sun is a minus. Is there an optimum size. I'm planning 2 gardens, one at my house and one at my grandchildren so that they can grow up with species that will be extinct and can tell their offspring about the old world.

      As far as the milkweed, definitely a no, but the herbs such as parsley and thyme shouldn't hurt.
      As far as the other flowers, I'm not too sure
