to be honest in europe we also didnt knew video and as kids teens we barely cared for lyrics, it was commercial song and everybody were singing it, when i was like 16 18 i then found video and lyrics and song became so much diferent :D

You didn't realize the song was mocking Barbie? Barbie girl = a conventionally attractive young woman typically perceived as lacking substance, character, or intelligence.
They couldn't do a "barbie" and "ken" accurate look because the barbie making company threatened to sue them over it.
