Grand Theft Auto 3: Entering Catalina's Helicopter

- Classic GTA 3, not the Definitive Edition. A while back I saw a video that showed that using the RC Bandit, you can actually enter vehicles you otherwise couldn't. I can't find the videos now, but it was uploaded by @SharkGangViceCity. I still think this information is valuable to have out in the world though.

It's been known that on the PS2 version of GTA 3, the helicopter Catalina escapes in in "The Exchange" has a solid block in the middle that Claude tries to enter if you press triangle. But there was seemingly no way to enter it. However, if you can get an RC Bandit up there (which is quite a pain since you have to be parked under a vehicle to exit since Claude trying to exit normally crashes the game) and underneath that solid box, the Helicopter can be entered.
Of course, it's easier said than done. Most of the time, Claude just walks in circles, or he tries to enter the Stinger. Sometimes he even teleports into the RC Bandit. It can be an annoying process, but if you stick with it, eventually you'll get lucky. In this video I don't teleport in until 7:07.
I have the RC Bandit parked right next that concrete vent thing. Then using a Stinger to drive up the dam wall (which is crazy that it works, but works better when it's not raining), I push the Helicopter over the RC Bandit. Apparently this can't be done on PC as you can't push it or even get the enter animation. Not sure if it works on Definitive Edition either.
Upon teleporting in, you notice the vehicle name just says "Helicopter" at the bottom right corner. But you can't do anything with it. You can't move it, and you definitely can't fly it. Sometimes you can exit, but other times you're stuck inside. The only camera angles that work inside of it are first person, top-down, and cinematic. Once the mission fails when the timer runs out, the Helicopter vanishes. And if you're in it, then you will be Wasted and spawn at the hospital. So even though it's unfortunate that you can't do anything with it, it's still quite cool that it can even be entered in the first place.
Like I said, I can't find the original videos, but I remember the channel also showing off using the RC Bandit to enter other vehicles like the Train to glitchy effects. You can even use the RC car to enter the GHOST missing after being put in a garage (of course to get it in the garage you need to be playing on an emulated copy of the game). Pretty cool stuff. Of course, the GHOST can be stored and re-entered on the Definitive Edition of GTA 3.
I don't think this will work on the Definitive Edition. Claude doesn't try to enter the Helicopter on that version.
I should note that I'm playing on the delisted PS4 version of GTA 3 on PS5. You can no longer buy this version of the game. As such, I also can't confirm if this method works on any other platforms.

In the game files, it's named "Escape" and only appears in GTA III.
This is like Mario 64 "L is real". Well, "Helicopter is real" in GTA III i guess, if this video had come out in 2005 or something, it would be just as popular

Yeah, i heard that Rockstar initially planned to add flyable helicopters in the game. I also heard that there are mods that use the leftover Rockstar's code to make helicopters spawn and make them flyable.
I guess your demonstration shows us that some of those unused lines of code are usable through such manipulations with mission multiplying and RC Bandit. Too bad it can't fly without mods.

Can confirm that this works on the original PS2 version (I used PAL 1.40) on PCSX2!
Good stuff! I'm assuming that PS2 (not DE) is probably the only platform it will work on since that seems to be the only console Claude tries to enter the Helicopter on.

damn, they actually gave the helicopter a name, i wonder if they planned on having helicopters then ended up scrapping it, in gta lcs, youre not supposed to be flying helicopters but you can actually fly them with methods of capturing one, flies just like the helicopters in vice city and it has no name, you can even keep it by pushing it into your garage, tedious process but worth it to explore OG liberty city in a maverick without mods.

@@fordmanx3 The same way I saw it done on PC months/years ago, I guess. They also used a Stinger (or a Vehicle like it) and then had the RC Bandit on the Map (nothing new). When you place the Vehicles as such and block the doors and such, it allows you to teleport inside. It's the same thing as when you obtain the Police Maverick (Helicopter is the name, too, when you enter it) in LCS. On PSP, you need to teleport in and out of it. At least there, you can use it. Here, you just enter it, say you did it, then move on, I guess. This will never be obtainable, unless perhaps DE, but other than that, I don't see how. All Boats/Helicopters crash the game when stored inside of a Garage. So, kinda pointless I guess...

Add in the missing information ----> You can't fly any Helicopter that was inside of the Garage since when you try and open the Garage, game will crash. All Boats/Helicopters work like that in this game. Sure, you can enter a Helicopter that was spawned by a Mission, and outside of the Garage. Means nothing if you can't store it and after storing it, open/close the Garage. I'd even be happy if this can be inside of a Garage and obtainable, but never allowed to enter it again. I'd still be happy to at least HAVE IT, obtained, but can't. Never will happen unless maybe DE since Boats don't crash the game there like everywhere else.

When the mission ends, the Helicopter gets deleted. If you are in the Helicopter when it gets deleted, Claude gets deleted too

Proper good job mate, I achieved that but on PC using a mod which allows to enter every vechicle. I wonder trick you showed is possible on vanilla PS2 version or Xbox.
