Tommy's mother was played by the director's mother. He said that she is pretty much like that in real life and she actually made the spaghetti and meatballs and brought them in for the scene.

Scorsese's father plays Vinnie in the scenes in the prison.

    • @thebillryan
      @thebillryan 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

What's amazing about that scene is that Scorsese's mother improvised the whole thing. There was no script. She just ad libbed throughout the scene. And so did everyone else.
Scorsese told his mom one thing before the scene. Your son has returned home and you haven't seen him in awhile. That's it. That was the only cue.
      Roll cameras.

  • @ReviewCart69

In the book it emphasizes way more. Jimmy was extremely feared. People who messed with him usually ended up being found cut into tiny pieces in trunks. Tommy was despicable. He once got a new gun and told Henry “wanna see something?” He then shot the first civilian who walked by in the head. Him and Henry ran off, Henry asks him “what’s wrong with you?” Tommy simply responds “what can I say? Im a cold cat.”
During a incident in New York, Paulie took a girlfriend on a date, the waiter accidentally spilled the food on Paulie. Paulie got angry and tried fighting the waiter causing the chefs and waiters to come out with knives. Shocked and angered Paulie went to get his men. They returned with sawn off baseball bats. They spent that whole night chasing and beating waiters across Queens

@@FlashheadXI find people are split fairly evenly on which one they prefer over the other. I think it depends on your mood at the time of viewing, if your in a hurry Goodfellas is faster paced and 32mins shorter where Casino at 2mins shy of 3hr run-time has a more "immersed in the story" feeling for the viewer but you can physically feel the length because of the slower pace. Goodfellas is more of a film you enjoy without needing (or the time) to think about where the story is going which makes it more action based than Casino. The story timelines also make Goodfellas feel faster with cramming 35yrs into it's run time compared to Casino's 13yr story in its.

The Godfather has some things that are very loosely inspired by true events:
    1) Johnny Fontane was based off of Frank Sinatra and the head of the New Jersey Mafia threatened to kill a bandleader that was holding him in a very restrictive contract.
    2) Leaving an animal's head on someone's property was a warning used by the Sicilian Mafia and occasionally by the American Mafia.
    3) The scene with the fish in the bulletproof vest was based off an associate of the Gallo Brothers who was murdered and the murderers left his jacket stuff with fish outside of their club.
    4) Dealing drugs was somewhat controversial within the American Mafia and the Families were divided on the issue with many enacting a "deal and die" rule, but some Mafia Families openly embraced the drug trade and even in the Families that banned it; often only banned it for low level members and top members took part in heroin wholesales.
    5) Moe Green was loosely based on Bugsy Siegel who was a Jewish gangster who founded the first resort casino in Las Vegas and was murdered by having his eyes shot out.
    6) Vito Corleone was inspired by mob bosses like Lucky Luciano (for helping organize the Mafia nationwide), Frank Costello (for being very diplomatic and having connections to powerful people), Joe Bonanno (for grooming his son to take over the family), Joe Profaci (for owning a large olive oil import business), and Carlo Gambino (for being very discreet).

Awhile ago I watched a TH-cam video explaining why Tommy and not Jimmy was punished for killing Billy Batts.
The reason that Jimmy went along with Tommy to kill Batts because it was over a racket. Before Batts went to prison, he own a successful racket. After Batts went to prison, Jimmy took over the racket. After Batts got out of prison, he demanded that Jimmy hand the racket back over to him but Jimmy didn't want to because he was making good money off the racket but he knew that he would eventually hand the racket back over to Batt because he was a made man. So Jimmy decided that Batts got to go in order to keep the racket.
The reason that Jimmy was spared it was because he was what the mafia called a good earner. No matter what Jimmy did, either robbery or racketeering or other crimes to make money, he would kick some of that money upstairs to Paulie and the higher ups and they figured that killing Jimmy would be like cutting off their main income. According to the real life Henry Hill, Batts was friends with this big time gangster named John Gotti and Gotti knew it was Jimmy and Tommy who killed Batts and he wanted them dead but the higher ups wouldn't let Gotti touch them because Jimmy was a good earner. They also wanted Jimmy to be a happy earner and they figure that keeping Tommy around, knowing that he's part of Jimmy's crew would make him happy. But over time Tommy started to become a liability by killing people outright and when he tried to r-word Henry's wife, that was the final straw. While Henry was in prison, his wife Karen had an affair with Paulie and when Tommy found out about the affair he considered her a slut and try to r-word her but she got away and told Paulie what Tommy tried to do. Fed up with Tommy, Paulie picked the phone up called the Gambino family and Gotti and gave them the green light to kill Tommy on the condition that they didn't touch Jimmy. According to the real life Henry Hill. Gotti personally killed Tommy himself by torturing him to death.

Back in the 80s & 90s the Howard Stern Radio show out of New York City was the place where famous people or want to be famous people would try to get on . After this movie was leased , Henry Hill popped up at the studio & stern put him on the air . They took phone calls from gangsters who threatened to kill Hill , but he just laughed it off . Even Spiders sister called in & begged Hill to tell her where her brothers body was , but Hill refused & said that anything he told her could implicate him in a murder . Over time Hill would show up or call in drunk out of his mind . You can hear these Howard Stern Shows on TH-cam

That was the Lucchese Crime family. They had about 250 members X3 associates. These guys had like 25, 30 murders under their belt a piece. I grew up around this stuff in Boston, same crap different city. Keep in mind these guys only hurt those that were in their world, and left everyone else alone. The actor who played "Fat Andy" was Lou Eppolito, he was actually the real deal. He was a crooked cop working for the mafia who was involved in several murders for the Lucchese and Gambino families in New York. He died in prison. The guy singing "pretend you don't see her" was singer Jerry Vale, my father saw him all the time on Revere Beach at a club called the Frolic, near Boston. The Frolic was also a mafia owned club. Paulie Cicero was in reality Paul Vario, he wasn't the boss, Tommy Lucchese was, but believe it or not, Paulie was one of Lucchese most violent captains (middle management).

"We can't be a team when you're cheating."
Karen's no saint. The film doesn't go into her affair with Paulie.
And Norway's prisons are how it should be. The rest of the world needs to figure out that when you put a person in a cage, an animal comes out of it. And when you beat someone, you get aggression in return. If you want someone to learn what you and society expect of them, you have to demonstrate it to them.

I think there is a very strong correlation between people who have never ever been on an airplane and people who think the world is Flat. True, or False?
Jails have many similar features in Commonwealth countries, including a system segregating minimum from maximum security and a series of locked gates allowing people from the outside in. As far as I understand it, the United States is pretty complicated too, because there are state as well as federal prisons depending on the type of crime.

Centane: _He should of waited to be made to get revenge (on Batts)_
Wouldn't of mattered. Made men cannot be touched, even by other made guys.
IRL, Paulie was a Captain in the Lucchese family (pronounced Loo'kazie), one of the 5 families (in this movie I think Paulie is portrayed as the actual boss of the Lucchese family). Tommy not only killed a made man of the Gambino family (another of the 5 families), he did it their bar! In the boss of the Gambino family, John Gotti's bar!

Carlo Gambino was still alive until 1976. The murder took place in 1970. John Gotti wasn't boss until the mid-late '80s.

@@littledickydolittle3071 You didn't read the whole comment. I don't remember exactly when Carlo Gambino's heir Paul Castelonno(I can't spell his name) was killed but I think it was '86. The Lufthansa heist was December of '79, and Tommy was killed right after whacking Stacks. He didn't live to see Jimmy purging everyone.

Tommy DeSimone (named Tommy DeVito in the film), the character played by Joe Pesci was even more crazy in real life.
He was a psychopath who killed dozens of people including women and children.
Henry Hill recounts that one day, he and Tommy were walking in the street after Tommy bought a new gun and Tommy wanted to try the gun so he shot at random a guy in the street and killed him.
Tommy did kill made man Billy Batts after Batts told him to get "his fucking shinebox" and he did kill the waiter Spider after Spider told him to go fuck himself.
Tommy disapeared in 1979 and the rumour is that he was killed on the order of future Boss of the Gambino crime familly, John Gotti, with the approval of Paulie (because if you want to kill someone of another familly you have to ask permission to the boss and Paulie was boss of a crew in the Lucchese familly).
Paulie gave the permission to kill Tommy because Tommy was crazy and unpredictable and he had become a liability to Paulie and Gotti really wanted Tommy dead because Billy Batts was a close friend.
Jimmy and Henry helped with the killing of Billy Batts but Paulie refused to have Jimmy killed because Jimmy was making a lot of money to the familly and they didn't want to upset him too much by killing Tommy AND Henry.
