Mark Ryden: Anima Animals

Discover @markryden's Anima Animals, a series of enchanted characters exhibited this past summer in collaboration with @galerieperrotin in Shanghai.
Encased in ornate, hand-carved wooden frames of the artist's design, Ryden's playful creatures are rendered ethereal and godlike. "Ryden has chosen to bestow considerable devotion to these fantastical and lyrical beings," writes Linda Tesner. An experience with his meticulously-realized paintings is "an invitation to see the world in an unconventional way," or perhaps even an opportunity to be transported into an exalted realm.
A hardcover book of the exhibition will be available in December 2020.

Beautifully executed and scary as Hell. The perfect artwork for today's America and by extension the rest of the world as well. We get sucked in by this visual Xanax, perfect in its pristine surfaces and visions of a hyper-cliched world of childhood familiars. While Ryden has the chops to pull off this look and was certainly an originator, he has spawned a horde of infantile imitators whose wide glassy eyed creations are everywhere. Make America fuzzy again.
