Imagine arresting a disabled man as a murder suspect when you already have a witness telling you that the murderer is a "GOOD RUNNER !!!! ". I mean this is incompetence of the highest degree.
They disregard that because of the same blood type and thr titanium in his pubic hair. Their citizen backlash them so they need a scapegoat to finally close the case.
Also, perhaps because he was not an immediate witness to a crime, but rather suspicious of him being the criminal, his testimony may not have been taken into consideration.
The sad thing about this case is that an innocent man was imprisoned for 20 years for a crime he didn't commit. He (Yoon Sung-Yeo) was only cleared of this false accusations when the killer (Lee Choon-Jae) admitted the crimes. Ironically, Lee is also serving life prison for killing her sister-in-law.
For those asking why he is not living in fancy house with lot of compensation. He mentions at 27:40 about how he isn't able to adapt to normal life but stuck with prison routine. And on the second part of this video, he says he was afraid to live in outside world. Since he was accused of horrific murder, nobody would welcome him and love him. Furthermore, after 20 years, Korea changed drastically. So, for him to adapt to this new generation, it's going to be tough. I think that is why he has hard time, even with millions of dollar in hand. For us, it's normal to ask why he is not spending this big money. But, in my opinion, for those who went through such trauma, money isn't a cure or answer to their life.
I seriously cannot fathom how Yoon survived those 20 years. The mental strength it requires to still be sane after the harrowing experience is unimaginable. It was outrageous that his disability was even used against him. I hope and pray that only good things will come to him, he deserves so much more. No amount of money can bring back those 20 years. As a sidenote, DNA test hasn't developed in South Korea back then, so the police using that evidence to carry out the investigation. Police had asked Yoon several times for his pubic hair saying that it's for the investigation. Yoon handed the police his pubic hair willingly, cause he thought it was fine, he wasn't the killer anyway. The police found out that Yoon's pubic hair shape matched of the evidence and contained metal too as he works in the workshop. This is where it went wrong. When the police captured Yoon, Yoon already said many many times that he isn't the killer. The police argued that Yoon entered the victim's house by climbing up a wall, but when they re-create the scene, Yoon can't do it as he walks with a limp that he got when he suffered from polio as a child. The police also argued that the killing was done while squating so they had asked Yoon to squat, he still can't do it cause of the limp. (some details may be incorrect or lost in my description cause english is not my first language, i only translate it from my resource, i suggest you to read further from reliable source)

This is probably the reason why I couldn't shake the feeling of someone's asking for help everytime I take a walk at night. I live hwaseong and it gives me anxiety knowing that there were murders happened in here. This is also probably the reason why I couldn't sleep well at night for how many years even if hwaseong is far more quiet and peaceful than any other city.
Kdrama: Tunnel, Memoir of Murder, signal, Gapdong were all inspired by the Hwaseong serial murder. There might be other ones that I failed to mention but these were the ones that were stuck in my head after I watched them.

I think that it's because DNA testing was not available in Korea until 1991. So before then they could only test to see whether the blood types matched (if I'm not mistaken).

I watched murder movies, series, and documentaries for the last 5 years. I have seen terrible and scary psychopaths. Whenever there are innocent people who are involved unwillingly and forced, I can't help but blame the authorities. Why can't they just search or find solid evidence and make an effort to find the real culprit? This documentary really is amazing because it shows and portrays different view points of the people who are involved in this case especially the wrongly accused murderer, Mr. Yoo. Things will be difficult but I cheer you up. Don't lose hope because you didn't do anything wrong and just live the rest of your life you eagerly waited for and the freedom you have prayed for. The fact that it's so transparent that they caught the wrong person. From the start it was known that "the criminal was a good runner, someone who is in his mid 20's." And the the one who was framed had POLIO. Seriously, the cops had to be really joking around abt this.

I remember watching a movie or documentary about a guy who was falsely imprisoned for rape. Only years later the one who was assaulted revealed the real truth. As I was curious I searched online of similar cases and found that there many people imprisoned for crimes they never committed.
This poor man. Mr Yoon, I hope the rest of your life is/was and your next lives are full of love and joy. As for South Korea, how proud you must be. I noticed the filming said in 86 was the protesting for Democracy and a Democratic government and in this film, a government official was politely but firmly criticising the government for the handling of the case. You can really be proud as a nation and as a society.

@@ZH-Rocks Chun-jae Lee is the true criminal of this case. He confessed for his crimes last 2019 when faced if DNA evidence. Yoon was imprisoned for 20 years for a crime he didn't commit because of incompetent police, they also tortured him until he confessed just to solved the case. But he was proven innocent after the real killer is caught (he is also in prison that time for killing his sister in law).

Terrible. During that time Korea was very politically unstable, and although economically growing by leaps and bounds, in other areas it was still at an underdeveloped country's level. Law and government procedures being two of them. A good glimpse of how incompetent some police investigations were during this time, you could look into the case of The Frog Boys, the murder of several boys in Korea during the early 90's I believe. It was handled horribly and remains unsolved to this day.
I feel that yoons arrest was impulsive because of the pressure the police was getting from the nation. which is absolutely reckless and absurd. with such minimal evidence, the police just crafted a story that they WANTED to hear, and not the truth

im a south Korean. South Korea sucked after the Korean War until the early 2000's. Thankfully our legal system has been taking giant steps ahead, and out police has learned a lot of things ever since the Frog Boys incident. I watched murder movies, series, and documentaries for the last 5 years. I have seen terrible and scary psychopaths. Whenever there are innocent people who are involved unwillingly and forced, I can't help but blame the authorities. Why can't they just search or find solid evidence and make an effort to find the real culprit? This documentary really is amazing because it shows and portrays different view points of the people who are involved in this case especially the wrongly accused murderer, Mr. Yoo. Things will be difficult but I cheer you up. Don't lose hope because you didn't do anything wrong and just live the rest of your life you eagerly waited for and the freedom you have prayed for. Thank you for this documentary. I have learned something today again
The fact that it's so transparent that they caught the wrong person. From the start it was known that "the criminal was a good runner, someone who is in his mid 20's."

I remember watching a movie or documentary about a guy who was falsely imprisoned for rape. Only years later the one who was assaulted revealed the real truth. As I was curious I searched online of similar cases and found that there many people imprisoned for crimes they never committed.

As for South Korea, how proud you must be. I noticed the filming said in 86 was the protesting for Democracy and a Democratic government and in this film, a government official was politely but firmly criticising the government for the handling of the case. You can really be proud as a nation and as a society.

@@ZH-Rocks Chun-jae Lee is the true criminal of this case. He confessed for his crimes last 2019 when faced if DNA evidence. Yoon was imprisoned for 20 years for a crime he didn't commit because of incompetent police, they also tortured him until he confessed just to solved the case. But he was proven innocent after the real killer is caught (he is also in prison that time for killing his sister in law).

Terrible. During that time Korea was very politically unstable, and although economically growing by leaps and bounds, in other areas it was still at an underdeveloped country's level. Law and government procedures being two of them.
A good glimpse of how incompetent some police investigations were during this time, you could look into the case of The Frog Boys, the murder of several boys in Korea during the early 90's I believe. It was handled horribly and remains unsolved to this day.

It seems that when police are under pressure to solve a crime they are more interested in conviction and punishment than finding the real culprit. While there is the tragedy of the victim there is also the tragedy of the wrongly accused.

im a south Korean. South Korea sucked after the Korean War until the early 2000's. Thankfully our legal system has been taking giant steps ahead, and out police has learned a lot of things ever since the Frog Boys incident. Such tragic cases should never happen again in such a closely moderated country.

Humanity committed a grave crime towards Yoon. Those years wasted. He could've married and had kids and a Happy life. Humanity failed him and robbed him of his life!
The scenes and analysis from the docu series reminded me of the K drama "Beyond Evil". There were a lot of similarities found on both.
