Hard headed??? I don't believe that of a GSP...No just joking. I had a GSP for six years until he died suddenly one day. He never told me a lie and was my best freind for those six years. Your video brings back many happy memories. Thank you.
Very timely for me and my young pup on trying to keep drive and interest! He would rather hunt at times! Thanks for the videos they are always very encouraging!
Hi Dan, well he sounds like a normal young pup! Keep revisiting the basics that he has learnt, whilst pushing forward slowly with new stuff. He will get there. Enjoy your training :)
@@AyteeGSPs I appreciate that! I will definitely keep working on the basic while building that drive! He's a springer spaniel mixed with a fox hound so his nose gets in the way haha! Thanks for all the videos and I look forward to each one!
I agree but these exercises are preparation for all her work, including shootover. You are right, she is not cut out for Working Tests. It is always worth persevering with a difficult dog if you have the time, they sometimes simply mature later.
@@AyteeGSPs Carrot's markings and personality are almost identical to my current GSP. He's a good hunting dog but he's pretty useless at retrieving anything other than dead/dying animals. Dummies and lures don't interest him at all. Guess he thinks practice is a waste of time.
@@nothingbutmilk6576 Its all about obedience. They must learn to follow commands when they would prefer to do something else ! Then you can send them for a runner amongst dead birds ! I would say persevere, perhaps our dogs are related lol :)
Great video thanks for sharing. My Eng. Pointer is 14wk, just starting recall with a ball but will progress to a dummy soon. What is the launcher you use & where from? Thanks
Hi Duncan glad you enjoyed the vid. I would be very restrained in using a dummy launcher with any very inexperienced dog. Basic obedience and confidence in the dog wants to be established long before shot is combined with retrieves and shot would be introduced on its own from a distance. Just take things very slowly and of course an english pointer, not being bred to retrieve, may well need a much more measured and patient approach. But enjoy, my launcher is made by Turner Richards and our greatest fun and its best use is amongst a group of dogs, when more dogs & handlers are watching, learning steadiness and marking than are actually doing the retrieve. Good luck, enjoy !

Great videos thank you very helpful. We have a 5 month old pup. Been working on basics but very hard to get her to stay in sit and be commanded for a retrieve. Is this normal at this age? Am I working her too hard to young?
Hi Gareth, Thanks, glad you are finding them helpful. If she is finding something difficult to understand just take your time. The training needs to be fun and if she is not able to do an exercise it is almost certainly because you have moved forward too quickly. A 5 month old brain will not be able to process too much at once, because they are so immature and playful, so the pressure of instructions must be absolutely minimal - keep things fun. If this is your first HPR we have training manuals available online on our website which will be helpful. Good luck, keep us posted, L
@@AyteeGSPs OK thank you, yes perhaps I am wanting too much from my pup , she is really good so it's reassuring to hear that it normal! I will check out your website.
Hi Valerie, once they pay attention to work eating grass will stop. It takes some dogs longer to mature and be able to concentrate for a length of time. A mixture of discipline, keeping lessons interesting and growing up! Thanks for your response, enjoy your dogs!
To a great extent I agree with you, but she needed a correction for a poor response - when she understood the command but chose to ignore it. Getting hold of her and physically sitting her up would have been an alternative and might have worked better but many people are not strong enough to do this. My correction through the lead did not hurt her, but it was sharp and quick and enough to give an improved response. Her focus on dummies has improved immeasurably, but I respect you for questioning the methods.

Maybe Carrot just isn't cut out for retriever competitions. Not all GSPs are.

Hi Rooster - "Turner Richards Dummy Launcher" not to be overused as can easily make them unsteady 😏 Enjoy your dogs !
