Fire Alarm Test #64

  • If you're a fan of longer videos this one is for you! Test of a Simplex 4010 system at a local high school. This facility is very special to me as it is actually my old high school from many years ago. Much however has changed since then as the facility has undergone multiple expansions/renovations. This is evident by the various mix of devices in different wings. Original system was an Autocall (unknown panel type) as can be noted by some of the original devices.

The mix of electromechanical 4903 and TrueAlert horn/strobes reminds me of the campus center at my friend's university; they had a Simplex 4100 system installed in the mid-90s set up as conventional (replacing an old Standard system from 1971), and when a few areas were renovated during the 2000s they put in TrueAlert horn/strobes and addressable initiating devices. But then when they renovated the main lobby and above floors there, they replaced the 4100 with a Simplex 4100ES voice-evac panel, with TrueAlert speaker/strobes installed in said renovated area, while the other parts of the building still have the electromechanical 4903 and TrueAlert horn/strobes (along with the conventional initiating devices in the areas with 4903s)! A rather unusual system now for sure.

@@GaryBeltz I haven't heard it yet, but knowing the university, it'd probably be Slow Whoop and the default male or female evac message.

Perfect day for this video! There was a false fire alarm at school a few days ago... everyone had a heart attack since it was right when we got to class. And me being a fire alarm nerd went slower than everyone else... checking to see if the alarms were working right. Yep, that’s me 😂 Cool video by the way, I subscribed

My first elementary school (now a K-8 school) actually still has a Simplex 4010 panel. It was installed around the mid-2000s, tied into the school's original Simplex 4208 panel from 1974 (the 4010 was replacing a 4004 installed in 1998, which in turn replaced a Simplex 4002 installed in the late 80s or early 90s for added-on duct detectors.) The 4010 was for main controls, the duct detectors, signal coding and the modular building, while the 4208 was used for the existing pull stations, heat sensors and an old ionization smoke detector. They had Simplex 4051+4050-80 horn/lights, but they used 120-VAC light plates for some reason, and while the NACs on the 4010 would code the signals (Slow March Time), they had to run through the 4208 to provide the AC power for the lights (while the horns were 24-VDC.) But in early 2015, the Simplex 4208 panel started failing (sometimes the signal circuits wouldn't work in a certain zone, or the system would randomly go into alarm), so during the February break they gutted the 4208, wired everything into the 4010, replaced the old 4208 battery cabinet with a couple of EST booster power panels, and replaced all alarm signals with SpectrAlert Advance horn/strobes (they even replaced the Wheelock MT-24-LSMs in the modular with Advances!) But at least my city's school district considers faulty/malfunctioning fire alarm systems a top priority on their agendas!

Nice video! I won’t be able to do this in my high school because it’s getting torn down and I’ll be away at college then. Although, a local elementary school in my district is being torn down in late June or early July though and I am going to be acquiring that school’s old system as it is up for auction and I have put a high bid on it. 4005 control panel, and 2903 strobe plates with 9838 horns behind them for A/V’s. Pulls are a variety of 4251-20’s, a couple 2099’s, and some old Simplex local alarm “Chevron” metal pull stations from the 50’s.

It was built in 1951, and they had either a Simplex 4020 or 4100 system installed in the 90s with 4903 horn/strobes (probably electromechanical), but the main office had a SpectrAlert Classic, and there were also a few disconnected IBM 4030 horns left over from the original IBM system that the 90s Simplex system replaced. The school was eventually demolished in 2015 in favor of a new high school campus that has a Simplex 4100ES voice-evac system.

That depends on the panel type. In conventional panels, two short pulses usually means that the zone has already been activated earlier in the test. In addressable panels, like you said, two short pulses means 0 (At least, I think).

The only way you would tell if the fire alarm was broken is if the horn didn't sound and/or the strobe didn't flash.
