  • Hello Doomers! Today we will be checking out one of my favourite pedals; the MXR blue box. This pedal has already earnt it’s place in rock history appearing on one of Led Zeppelin’s later hits ‘Fool in the rain’ and boasts some absolutely mad, signal-destroying fun. We explore some of the settings including a straight fuzz sound all the way through to 8-bit crushing dirt tones. As well as getting acquainted with the pedal itself, I show you some awesome tricks I’ve picked up through the years to take the madness even further and explore some really unique and out-there tones. This isn’t your every day drive tone pedal, but is absolutely worth having in your arsenal for that extra special, skull-crushing riff to really make your song pop. Have you tried the blue box? Did you like it or did you hate it? Let me know your experiences below in the comments and let me know how you think it sounded today, I really look forward to hearing all of your comments.
    If you like what you saw here, don't forget to drop me a comment and let me know. I’d love to hear back from you if you are considering buying one or if you already have!

    The blue box is absolutely mental and I think I should probably have one in my life.

    I unironically love the crazy shit this little box of joy can do. Heck, with the octave side turned down and the level cranked, it does a passable Muff impression. Crazy AND versatile, who'd a thunk it?

      Fuzz pedals like this are just the best

    MXR are great pedals. Cheap used too. The Blue Box is a must have for MXR fans! I’ve been buying MXR for over a year now and I’ve 16 now, 12 of which are on a special MXR only board I made myself. I just bought La Machine in mint condition with box for €80! I love all my MXR pedals but I find the Phase 90 the worst as it’s aggressive and harsh sounding. The vintage Phase 90s are better.

      You should check out the MXR Phase 95.
      It includes the Phase 45 and Phase 90 with a switches to toggle between the 45 & 90, and the Script and Block logo versions.
      I have two that I run in series - uber trippy.

      @@lespauldisciple3349 for phasers I prefer ehx small stone to the mxr 45 or 90, if you pinned me down and made me play a mxr phaser I would choose a script letter 100.

      Kosmic: My preferred phase is the MXR Vari-phase. It's a Phase 90 with a foot pedal (like a wah) to control the speed. (The original version cut the effect on & off when you stepped on and off the pedal. The upgraded model has a "toe-down" on/off switch so the effect can stay on when you lift your foot.
      Very rare.
      Very cool.
      Vari-phase. 😃)

      Providence Phase Force. It can be re-voiced in the mids via a toggle. One setting is ballpark Phase 90, the other being closer to the EHX Small Stone.
      I do like the old EHX Bad Stone and a good MXR Phase 100. Phase 95 is fine for practice, jams, even recording. It's a good little unit.

    My brain kept expecting you to bust out the Spirit in the Sky riff... Beautiful Strat by the way!

    • @PBOD
      @PBOD  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Chris, it certainly does have that kind of tone. The strat is one of those lovely mexicans made with US parts, I've played some beautiful strats over the years and this is similar to a £1500 - £2000 range US strat. One day i'll pick up a custom shop but until then this is great.

    Many years ago I purchased a blue box. Not really schooled about the difference between fuzz and overdrive. It still sounded great but only with songs that originally used fuzz boxes.

    The last riff reminded me pleasantly of Bad Company’s Rock and roll Fantasy!

    Marc Moreland, guitarist from Wall oF V()()D()() supposedly used the MXR Blue Box? But for the life of me, i cannot hear it's sound on any of the Live W.O.V. or studio recordings? *R.i.P. Moreland. Anyway--Good example of this pedal's extremes! Thanx.

    I found this pedal is greatly enhanced by first feeding a boost pedal or EQ into it.

    Big heads up, if you already have a fuzz (especially an always-on one) that's central to your sound, you're better off getting an octaver. This thing has fuzz for days.

    It gates out like a Bazz Fuss - does it seem to sustain lower notes longer? Anyway, from the Fool in the Rain solo, I would not have guessed the full sound of this pedal. Definitely gonna get one at some point :)

    • @kosmicwizard
      @kosmicwizard 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, it isn't good at sustaining any note. But what it does do is awesome!

      @@PBOD I'm definitely Team Blue Box. They've made fancier ones over the years (the new Poly Blue has MXR even jumping in) but NOTHING does THE Blue Box. It's an independent creature on your board that can nary be tamed.

    DO NOT DO A C11 MOD unless it is a vintage bluebox. The modern reissues aren't able to react the same way to having it done.

    • @PBOD
      @PBOD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2
