Wonderful reaction to this incredible band. The vocalist for this band btw is amazing, and my favorite among the Japanese rock and metal bands. This band's instrumental songs are created to give the vocalist a break during live performances.

The band calls the contrast between their cutesy maid costumes and their hard rock sound "the gap". They enjoy seeing the confused looks on people's faces when they walk on stage and the reaction when they start playing with their hard rock sound.
My opinion is that Band-Maid are one of the best bands to have formed in the past 10 years, and are currently one of the best rock and roll bands on the planet. They play many genres including ballads, power ballads, pop, rock, progressive rock, hard rock, punk, metal, nu metal, and everything before in-between and beyond. They also have several great instrumental songs that they use live to give their lead singer Saiki a break.
I don't know what musical style that you prefer but you can't go wrong by listening to Onset, From Now On, Moratorium, No God, Rinne, About Us, Play, Why Why Why, and my favorite Official Music Video of theirs Don't You Tell Me. The double bass kick drum on No God and Rinne will blow your mind. Have fun with it!
    Introducing The Band...
Miku [mee-kuu] (Small Pigeon) - Rhythm Guitar, Vocals, Lyricist, Band Founder
Misa [mee-suh] (Barefoot Assassin) - Bass Guitar
    Akane [aah-kah-nay] (Gorilla) - Drums
Kanami [kuh-nah-mee] (Mincho) - Lead Guitar, Songwriter
    Saiki [sigh-kee] (Sai-Chan) - Lead Vocals

You definitely need more! Their creativity, skill, and talent are amazing. Just wait until you hear the singer. She's very good. The backup singer (sometimes she's also a lead singer) is the rhythm guitarist, and is the founder of the group. She's the cute looking one, but she's in her early 30s. They're all in the early 30s, except the lead singer, who is 29. My favourites to recommend for a newcomer to their music are Freedom, Domination, Play, Puzzle, Sayonakidori (both acoustic live and regular live), Moratorium, Corallium, Onset, Influencer and Daydreaming. And you know what? Everything else. Shambles is one of their newest. It's been a year since I started listening to them, and none of their songs ever get tiring.

LOL - always fun to watch someone's first Band-Maid experience. Guess what? Their lead singer is awesome too!! They are in many of our opinions the finest hard rock band on the planet today. They just passed their 10 year anniversary, so there are a gazillion choices for you to react to - I'll just say this - all of the suggestions for future songs of theirs are correct, because as good as they are at playing, their #1 strength is impossibly fantastic songwriting. Peace out.

  • @Davey-Boyd
    @Davey-Boyd 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

Welcome to Band-Maid! Wait until you meet their lead singer! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 57 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. Though not a metal band per se, they are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. They are currently celebrating their 10th anniversary with the original line up.
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. The idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!

  • @GlennWH26

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).
Of course, you didn't see Saiki in this. Band-Maid gives ridiculously generous servings (as they call concerts)- 2-3 hours is normal, and the last show of their most recent tour was over 4 hours! To protect Saiki's voice, they give her a break in the middle of the serving with a mix of instrumentals, softer songs where Miku sings lead, and Miku's 'Magic Spell Time' routine, which has to be seen to be believed.

Check out the song that was commissioned for the season two closer for the Netflix anime, Kengan Ashura, 'Shambles' It's one of their heaviest songs yet! The OMV is suprerior to the LIVE version for NHK. But if you want a good LIVE You can start with either 'Domination' LIVE or 'Real Existence' LIVE from an earlier tour. Or if you want something newer try 'Hate' LIVE from Lollapalooza. There are no more loyal fans than Maidiacs. They will drive views and subscriptions to your channel.

No place better to start than the beginning. Check out their first song/video "Thrill" this song is the one that not only put them on the map, but kept them from obscurity. If "Thrill" didn't make it they were done as a band. They nailed over 1million views on Fakebook, in a week then they took off on TH-cam and 10 years later here they are just tearing it up and getting better every song. Stick around, Band-Maid never disappoints...EVER!

Great reaction J. Yeah, the Maids do clean house. And trust me this is not surprising once you get into their 120+ song catalog. If you like Awesome melodic hard rock then this is your band without exception. They do have excellent vocals but I'll suggest another instrumental on their YT channel: ONSET-LIVE. Then go with DOMINATION-LIVE and you will then want to traverse the pigeon hole for the next 12 months. With no lack of excellent tunes. Peace. 57

They started in their twenties. Lead singer was 19. Now 10 years on they continue to be simply phenomenal. So many styles and influences. They write both music and lyrics and are all so expert in their instruments that they arrange and produce their own music. They call it the GAP. The difference between what they look like and what they sound like. With Band Maid you simply can't go wrong with any song they have done. Old or new.

My suggestion would be their newest release "Shambles". Either the official MV in their channel or the LIVE Shambles from the NHK World-Japan channel. And yes, they do have a lead vocalist. She took a break in this music video. She does that in their concerts too where the band plays an instrumental and the second vocalist (lady with the red flower and plays rhythm guitar) sings LEAD.

Yeah start with newer stuff out of respect for the progress they have made in the last decade. At their ten years anniversary gig in yokohama arena they surprised them with old footage, including Thrill that all the old fans simp over. The level of cringe from the women they have become now was sad to see.
See "Shambles" MV or "No God" official live video. Or HGK live for mental metal.
They use the track you've just seen for introducing themselves in festivals or when they supported GnR etc just to destroy any illusions that they are a Jrock idol outfit, or in any other way connected to babymetal.

Heaps of genre's - something for everyone and not a bad song to date.
The perfect introduction for these ladies would have to be ... "Don't Judge A Book by it's Cover".

I saw them Live in Boston on their fall 2022 tour, I've seen a ton of bands in concert likely over 100 different bands and these ladies are likely my favorite out of all I've seen. Vladimir Chupin's YT channel has a pretty good recording of this song live from that Boston show (Paradise Rock Club) if you want to confirm they can do it just a good live.
They've been around 10 years now, all the members are in their early 30s now.

Welcome to the world of Band-Maid! Rock's greatest secret. This song is a great one and one of my very favorites, but you're just scratching the surface. Band-Maid isn't a one trick pony and the more songs you hear, the more that you will be amazed. They're singer is as good as the rest of them too so I def recommend checking their other stuff out. "Domination Live", specifically the live version, is a great one to start with. It's been reacted to a zillion times on YT, but it's a song and a performance that captures everything that is good about Band-Maid in one neat little package. After that, just follow the rabbit/pigeon hole wherever it takes you. Discovering this band is as fun a musical journey as there is.
I enjoyed your reaction, and welcome to the club of BM fandom. Also, wait until you see these ladies live...
    Cheers!

The look on your face when Kanami hit that first lick was priceless. I'm 76 and have been following rock since the late 1950's and they are without a doubt the best rock group I have seen since the late 1970's. They do it all and they are not kids, lol. Akane the drummer is the oldest at 31 I believe, her birthday just passed in December. Band founder and rythym guitarist Miku(red flower) and lead guitarist and savant-class composer Kanami are either very close or just at 30. I believe that bassist Misa Misa Misa and vocalist Saiki are the youngest. Don't quote me and I'm sure that any of the other BM devotee's will correct me.
They are not a gimmick and are a serious professional band that are at the top of the rock heap right now. They are absolutely a must to see when they come to the US again. I've seen them 3 times, once in 2022 and twice this year and they are just outstanding live. The way you hear in the videos is the way you hear it live, except that without the polishing, so it is raw and filthy, the way live rock should be. They have no holes in their musicianship and their catalogue is priceless from beginning to end. Ignore the "simping" nonsense, following their journey is well worth the effort. Even if you don't want to react to it, you have to watch the MV of "Thrill", it saved the band from breaking up and put them on the road to where they are today. You have a LOT of fun reactions ahead of you. Asian female bands are the keepers of the flame when it comes to great rock. There are about 16 really good Asian female bands, mostly from Japan, with a great new band from South Korea called Rolling Quartz, which is blowing things up right and were here in the US in 2023. And it's just not rock, there are some amazing female metal groups also.
I eagerly await your next reactions of Band Maid. You might want to check out some of the other great Japanese groups, like SCANDAL, Trident, Aldious, Lovebites, Nempophila, Doll$Box and quite a few others. Enjoy the ride. And if you are seriously interested in learning about BM, a YT creator named Ohrenje has out together a great documentary of the formation of the band.

Funnily enough you've just found the band with the two best singers- Saiki and Miku+guitar, Best rhythm section- MISA-bass and Akane- drums and Kanami- best guitarist/composer. Not many rock bands can'd produce a good instrumental because their song writing and arrangements are just not good enough. This air a recent song- for their earliest try Thrill Official Music Video, for the middle try Domination Official Live Video, although there are 50 great songs from this period that would please anybody. Don't let the costumes, nail varnish and lipstick fool you- these are serious musicians.

The Japanese metal/rock scene is the best in world currently. The all female bands dominate the genre there. Band-Maid, Lovebites, Nemophila & Hanabie are all awesome. Some elite musicians. I'm partial to Lovebites & Nemophila, but if someone thinks the other 2 are better it's a tough argument, they are all incredible. Dive deeper you will not be disappointed.

@@jeremydawkins8814 Thankee Sir. Here is the remainder of that file.
Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead.
Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition.
Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition.
Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music.
Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well)
So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance.
And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD!
      ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!!
Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan.

Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning"
On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"...
The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited)
This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their TH-cam channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill.
Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid.

You are about to embark on a fantastic journey. You will become a MAIDIAC - resistance is futile!
You do NOT have to Hope that they are good live! They are actually better! Same quality of talent and more bass solos - guitar solos - drum solos than you can shake a drum stick at! They just finished a sold out 10th Anniversary tour of the US. So you have 10 years of catching up to do. Doesn't matter the song you have found your mother load of a band.
