- Emilie Schindler. A heroine, forgotten by history, who fearlessly saved Jewish lives. The name of her husband Oskar Schindler became synonymous with acts of compassion and humanity in the Nazi era. But what role did his wife Emilie Schindler play?
Filmmaker Annette Baumeister tells the story of Emilie Schindler, who protected people without attracting much attention. After the war, Emilie was abandoned by her husband and forgotten by the world.
Emilie Pelzl was born in the Sudetenland in 1907. From an early age, she worked on her parents' farm and cared for relatives. At the age of 20, she fell in love with the charming Oskar Schindler. Although he was considered a heartbreaker, she married him. Oskar had affairs and squandered the dowry, but Emilie stuck by him. During World War Two, the Schindlers ran factories and employed Jewish workers - saving many of them from the death camps.
In this documentary, Emilie Schindler's Argentinian carer Leandro Coseforti, her niece Traude Ferrari, and historians all describe a forgotten heroine. Annette Baumeister sensitively reconstructs Emilie Schindler's life, bringing her out of her husband's shadow.
The film draws a picture of a woman who risked her life to help others. By procuring food and medicine for those in need, she helped to rescue many Jewish people right under the noses of the SS.

I am glad that Emilie Schindler has been given the recognition that she well deserves. According to a man who lived in Cleveland, Ohio , a taylor named Mr. Mintz, who was one of the survivors of Shindler's list, Mrs. Schindler was an angel who took care of the workers, baked cakes for them, brought them necessary medicines etc. He believed that she was never given the recognition and credit that she deserved. He referred to her as a lovely and kind lady and based on this documentary, it appears that he was correct.
I'm happy she was finally Recognized.
When they said Emilie was old and in Argentina ALONE AND FORGOTTEN...I wept for her. ❤ Her name should be KNOWN!
God bless Emilie Schindler. Righteous Among The Nations. RIP. 🙏
Emilie was a Beautiful Angel! God Bless her!
Emilie was a beautiful human being. SHE is the reason these poor people ultimately survived. Good job, Spielberg, for forgetting the main player!! 👏
Emilie Schindler was a Sudeten German-born woman who, with her husband Oskar Schindler, helped to save the lives of 1,200 Jews during World War II. Unfortunately, women get to take a back seat, no mater their contribution. Be nice when that changes. "Shindler's List" is a movie worth watching.
The same as the film "Hidden Figures", about the African American female mathmatitcians behind the US early space programme. Marie Cure' is another. Stolen recognition if you will.

To me, he was the front man with the ideas and connections but, the day to day running, the heart and soul of the operation, was done by her. She was the one who kept it going and kept the Jewish people safe for as long as she could. A partnership but she was, or became, the silent partner.

I feel so sorry for Emilie! I think she really loved him and certainly isn’t the first woman to marry a rogue. I just wonder why he married her? He was so young and under no pressure to marry so why? Oskar was a deeply flawed man yet when he saw the wars great injustice, for perhaps the only time in his life, he rose to the occasion and did the right thing.
At about 19 minutes, it explains that her dowry was quite substantial and he could do with it as he liked. Married, but still a bachelor in his head and lifestyle. He was always chasing money.
@ true but I think it also said that Oscar’s family was quite well off and would he have known about the dowry size until the wedding happened. It did say her parents didn’t approve so couldn’t they have threatened to withhold her dowry if she proceeded? Just asking. It seems she loved him her entire life regardless of how bad he treated her. I’m surprised she didn’t follow him back to Germany since nothing was keeping her in Argentina. So many questions and all the answers died with her.
I thought he went to Germany and then didn't send her money to follow him
I lost just a little respect for Oscar but gained huge respect for Emilie.
Another example of The Greatest Generation! A True Hero!
Emilie was a wonderful woman with a golden heart.❤
The Winds of War is such a well done miniseries based on Herman Wouks book , I watched the entire series on YT , people interested in this subject must see The Winds of War with a huge superb all star cast. So informative for people such as myself who struggle with reading books, due to my Aspergers Syndrome
Apparently, she still IS living in Oskar's shadow. This report is 95% about Oskar.
This. Thank you. What an incredible story. What an incredible time. Humanity comes in all forms. Righteous Among Nations.
Thank you Annette Baumeister and DW for telling the long forgotten story of Emilie Schindler. What a woman of courage, strength and commitment! Obviously Oskar married her for her money and then abandoned her to her fate. May she rest in peace and may her memory live on.
A wonderful documentary which fills in the bits Spielbergs movie left out.
God bless this amazing woman. May we, woman of today have her courage to do right.

Read the book. Absolutely horrific. Much more detailed. The film follows the book quite well, except the film totally ignores her role.
What a beautiful and courageous woman! Thank you for all your work to help humanity! RIP
Both Oskar and Emilie Schindler have been honoured by Yad Vahem as Righteous Among the Nations. RIP.
Thankfully, Emilie Survived!
Almost forgot Emilie Schindler. I hope that World History will have her story.
Bless her soul, what a brave person
Very informative
Bless her soul! I’m glad she was honored at the end and she was able to be alive to see it happen. That’s Foul of Oskar to not even have the respect to give her some credit when it was due.
Oh Hollywood 🙆🏾♀️ fantasy ✨ when the truth would have been even more inspiring...Heroine of the first order ❤
We are still in the age of "but what did the woman have to say about it?" so ridiculous
No shyt. Unbelievable. 😮
So Oscar Schindler wasn’t jack shit his wife did everything smfh we should have been told all this a long time ago we would have given her the honor she deserves
No she copied her husband's humanitarianism-excellent!

Good afternoon, and Thank You for sharing this Lovely Woman's Story. A Well Done, Important, and Informative Documentary.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Glad i found this. Schindler's List was a powerful masterpiece. This movie makes me feel like Spielberg did us a small disservice by writing her out of the story.
It's frustrating, but even now, in this day and age, women's contributions are overshadowed by the men in their lives. I wish she would have been included more; at the very least an occasional mention or brief appearance; maybe just about her baking things for the people, seeing to their needs, keeping on top things if he was away rather than just seeing her pull away at the train station and implying she'd had nothing to do with this heroic humanitarian effort.
No hate about my opinion, please. I realize choices are made for time and complexity to keep the focus and the flow of the storytelling. And, as they say, your mileage may vary. You do you.
She actually never asked anything back from those she saved ... 😢. They returned her kindness without her even asking for it ... 😊
A sad life she lived ... unfairly treated by her husband, who could not stop being immersed with himself and so self centered and couldn't truly appreciate and loved his wife ...
Reminds me of my grandmother ... and what she went through with her husband. 😢
Great doc! ❤

How sad at losing the baby, after all she had done for others.
Thank you Emilie..❤
She’s an example for all human beings.
Spielberg, sir... please explain yourself as to literally leaving Emilie out of the picture!
She should've made a list or something..
Thank you! Love this story, esp the marriage covenant which was taken seriousl by one partner. . Not like today where people cannot forgive & they cannot love & they get bored & distracted & forget their marriage vows & go online & find a total stranger they think they love & the children suffer the most from divorce & they have no God except themselves. Very sad state of affairs. Peace n Jerusalem & salvation for America!
Well Done Emillia, Bravo! You outshine Oscar
They were very good people. In a very bad time. ❤❤
Shame, Stephen Speilburg for not including this part of the story.
the man who wrote the book Schindler's Ark is an Australian
That journalist needs to chill. She's an old woman probably lives alone. Complaining about the smell of her place... That is the least what someone should be worried about considering she's a hero.
I think the journalist was trying to highlight the disparity of a woman who gave everything but ultimately ended with no support in squalor.
God bless her.
I recall thinking this couldNEVER happen in the USA..... yet, here we are....
In what way is this happening in the USA? It's a false equivalence.

Just go back to sleep...
Have you read about what happened to the Tuskegee airmen?
Oscar could not have become Oscar without Emilie's help. She took dangerous mission to procure food for those workers. She sacrificed her life for Jews by supporting Oscar in spending all their savings because she was a good human being and a devoted wife. Usually at old age even flirting men become devoted husband, but Oscar left his wife with no money, at old age, to fend for herself, for another girl. He should have been by his wife 's side, who helped him get recognition by saving so many Jews. At the end she too got recognition but was very alone. I shall always remember her more than Oscar.
Imagine, they document the horror. As if they were doing something great.
God bless Emille!
Every accusation is a confession.
Very interesting documentary

Respectfully, im just confused as to how is it that modern day Jewish people could be ok with the treatment of the Palestinian people. I just struggle to make sense of how the Jewish people are repeating the same atrocities that were once inflicted on their ancestors
Generational trauma can twist the way you think and turn you into someone awful if you don't do a lot of work to break the cycle
Wonderful
Could you please do a documentary on Witold Pilecki?

Here we go again
He brought his girlfriend to meet his Wife, after she gave Birth??
Okay so Oskar Schindler paid the Jews for their work but in return they had to pay him back? Am I understanding that correctly? And if so how did they repay him? Were they like forced to give Schindler back a certain amount of money that would go towards his relocating to Argentina?
This documentary is ridiculous. The law in Germany at the time allowed women no agency. She had no choice but to accept what her husband chose for her, including his infidelity. Stop trying to describe her as if she lived in modern times.

@@Jojo-bm4tb Because 2434 Palestinian children were killed by Israel Zionists from 2011-2021 compared to 134 Israeli children killed during the same period (source: UNICEF). That is nearly a 20-1 ratio before October 7th. The recent Israeli actions point to have at least quadrupled that already since then.
