As a wedding filmmaker myself, I'm interested in Panasonic primarily because their prices kick butt, the S5ii's built in fan is amazing for weddings in the summer, they have fantastic anamorphic support which could lead to me differentiating myself from my competition, and the crazy good IBIS even with anamorphics is attractive as well - I hate using gimbals. That said, I've been waiting for a revamped S1 because I have a Sony A1 and Sony FX3 combo at the moment, and while excellent in most respects, their mediocre IBIS, lack of firmware updates, and high prices aren't my favorite. Not willing to go down to S5ii(x) specs, so S1ii is what I'm waiting to see.

The Leica SL3 has just been released, and they probably don't want to coincide directly with their partner's release. The S1R was 47.3MP, the same resolution as the SL2. As this model has been discontinued it makes sense that it could be on the way but not directly on the heels of the Leica

I wonder if there could be some sort of merger in the future. I can't imagine Canon and Nike working on a camera together.

Yes, that's the case. What I've read is, that there is an agreement between Leica and Panasonic, that first Leica releases their SL3 and later Panasonic may release the new S1 Mark II. Release date will be somewehre around summer 24.

Love my S1R, but I don't think they are going to bring the S1 series back. If I could ship my S1R to Panasonic and have them install phase detection, I would in a heart beat. I hope I'm wrong. I want to be wrong so bad but, if they do bring a S1R ii , I will buy it.

I fully expect that one of the new registrations will be the S2R or S1Rii with the same 60mp sensor from the Leica SL3 in a slightly scaled down body compared to the S1R. It just makes sense to me based on the reports over the last two years of the co-development arrangement between Leica and Panasonic. I’m sure that Panasonic is anxious to release this model but probably had a release agreement as part of their Leica partnership that stipulated they had to wait 1-2 months after the SL3 was announced. Just my speculation, of course.
I’m really hoping that one of the other new registrations is a FF version of their GX8 with the tiltable viewfinder. Now that would get me really excited!

You keep speaking as if the S1R shares the same sensor with the other S line but it should be stated that the S1R has always had the bigger 47mp sensor because it was the flagship stills model. Amazing camera and really a big brother to the S1.

I just wish Panasonic fund LUMIX division furthermore. They have so many chances to disrupt the camera market if they want to. But who knows we’ll see how they refresh their cameras.

Going to a three year refresh cycle for the GH and four years for the S is preferred. 5+ years is far too long with the competition these days.

The Leica lenses usually have more vivid colors than the Zeiss lenses. However, Zeiss lenses have similar color attributes, but also show more sharpness in jpg images. Panasonic vs Sony 🤷‍♂️ Panasonic has the best IBIS. Nobody can argue with that.

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Leica does make some very nice lenses, but you have to carefully pick which ones as they are not as affordable as the Zeiss lenses.

S1R is not "mid level" cameras, but top level camera. And still extremely good even in 2024. Not everything spinning around autofocus only. And autofocus *is very good* for photos in S1R though..... I think they will release in a few months with same specs as ~ SL3

I think they will release the GH7 this year, hopefully better battery life than the GH6. Lumix are typical for no leaks as they sign NDA's and if the staff do leak any info they are fired.

Canada manages to have a free trade agreement with the US and they are ten times our size, The UK being a large country should do much better in the EU. Hopefully things go back to normal soon.

I know to many wedding videographers in my town. After psd AF they where waiting and waiting pana for finally releasing a camera without crop at 50fps and a low pass filter. That never happened. Finally they switched to Sony. I'm still waiting but in April I have to make a decision. After AF release everyone thought that PANA it's gonna be on the game. But it's like dead 😢

I heard the Leica SL2 was basically the Panasonic S1 in a different body. Since the Leica SL3 just dropped I think we can see what the Panasonic S1 mk II could be capable of. Maybe a bit different but 15 stops of dynamic range is something.

Agreed, I do think Panasonic do have deep pockets but it’s going somewhere else than the LUMIX Divisions.
Just like Nikon owned by Mitsubishi, they have ton of support and deep pockets to buy Red Cinema Camera.
Only reason why Sony and Canon is having a lot more cameras due to bigger funds. Canon has their own company. And Sony pushing their entertainment division by upgrading their camera division funds.

I think the S1ii was released last year, and it was called the S5ii and S5iix...
I can see the value in there being new S1Rii and S1Hii cameras, that really push the specs, the S1Rii matching the new Leica, and the S1Hii improving on the S5iix with features that a larger body would allow, such as built in ND.
But I think if doing things again, and also looking at Sony, they wouldn't ideally have made the S1 as good as it was after the firmware updates, and in a way they already corrected themselves with the S5, which was slightly lower specced (recording time limits etc), but was also crucially smaller, lighter, and significantly cheaper, which I think is what buyers of a hybrid camera want, because if you're carrying a hybrid its because you want one camera to do the job of two, which very likely is because you're trying to travel light, or save money, and not buy or pack two cameras.
