OMG you are so funny, Rob. I just love how you teach History. Hope to see you around one day, so I can do an embarrassing old lady scream..."I've seen a celebrity!"
Great story about Sherwood! My husband worked at Witco locks during the 1980’s just over the dangerous bridge, looks like the building has a mattress seller there now. I was interested in the building where you had things typed, we lived just behind there as newly weds in the late 80’s. There was a Knitwit store there that sold fabrics, l would jump over the fence to go to classes there. Thanks again ! 😊
I always look forward to your vids Rob..love yr sense of humour and appreciate yr hard work in research. Always so interesting. Love Sherwood. There’s some beautiful homes there too. Sending you sunshine from Wellington Point 🌞
I thoroughly enjoyed this video Rob! It’s taking me close to an hour to finish because there is so much amazing information and photos to take a pause and explore more into. Also it was fantastic to see this video featured 90’s Rob with some great stories as well. I hope to shake your hand one day mate!
Not sure if there’s much to show but Oxley creek commons is a nice walk - you got pelican island and the secret garden where they harvested pines for ships along the river I believe.
It is worth going to but just be aware that at certain times of the year at dusk there can be snakes. I made that mistake 🤦♂️ and one of the snakes was black.
The Sherwood Cinema in the early 70's had deck chairs as seats that were very uncomfortable after about half an hour so sitting through the movies was a trial.
Yep, the relict local country picture theatre up in Malanda still has the old canvas seats - fair for wrapping the minor sprogs up in blankets but the few straight-backed normal chairs at the back get filled up by the oldies pretty quick! Still I guess we're lucky to still have the old theatre for stage and film entertainment these days. TV and then on-line content pretty well decimated all the picture theatres and dance halls of my youth.
The $50 moral conundrum is so personal. Most will be able to relate to it. You covered a lot in the time. But because it seems kind of random as well as researched my interest is kept up. Thanks for the quality and the effort.
In the late 90,s I rented a unit on oxley rd in corinda behind the fruit grocer shop.I met my future wife walking to the sherwood RSL a stones throw away from my flat.We are still married and old now.❤
It seems that churches can be a great thing for telling the history of an area because they are a lot less likely to get torn down than other buildings.
Thanks for the memories Rob. My fathers family grew up in a house about 50m from where you were standing at 19:20 on Kinkead Ave and before that on Wiley St. It strange seeing another man post a video on the internet of places I know so well. The Sherwood Arboretum is a special place.
The soil around Corinda Sherwood is some of the most reactive clay clay in Brisbane. That is what did in the first St Matthews. Foundations wrinkled. The wooden one burnt down because cleaning rags spontaneously on a Saturday night. Too much love.
Yeah I used to live around the corner and loved that spot to have a think and wonder too, especially at sunset with that amazing view. I'd always think about what it would've been like for the family that had a house there way back then.
For a non believer your confession of the $50 find was a laugh hahaha. Great video I used to walk from Oxley bowls club to Sherwood shops with my auntie and grandmother back in the 80’s. There was a huge macadamia tree in one of the parks we would always stop at and have a snack, not sure if it’s still there though, it was huge back in the 80’s so council have probably cut it down by now cause we can’t have anything free for the people that would be unconstitutional 😂

I had a similar story about the $50 lady - I was at one of those DVD kiosks looking to rent a movie and I heard a beeping at the ATM next to me with $200 hanging out.
