the actor is so good that watching him made me cry. firstly in the angry patient, i felt afraid and now i am feeling sad. such a good actor he is.. 😅 expecting more videos with him.
She is acting normally as in real life...I think she did well I want to know the name of this actor he is amazing 👏 actor made you feel like doing real meeting.
Doctors are human. Do we forget because we’re in a clinical environment and do not remember they aren’t a god, and definitely not infallible? We both might try to avoid or sugarcoat a pill like this situation. It’s scary. Reminding: we have the right to quiz our doctor, our medical co-pilot. Reminding: no one is infallible and doctors witness pain and confusing situations every day, and treatments might be unique per person.
I think silence is very useful. This is a short video to show what should be done and they didn't have time to pause - also this is for an OSCE which is not the greatest way to test bedside competency imo. I feel like if my doctors give me time to process and think, I like them a lot more! It's natural to feel awkward when telling someone they don't have a lot longer to live and to fill that awkwardness with talking. But silence can be very powerful and the patient will fill it by expressing things that they wouldn't have otherwise.
Why on earth would she say "it's very early in your journey" It just confuses the patient, considering his cancer has actually spread. The actor was amazing, but this was a poor breaking bad news station from the doctor
I'm only a 3rd year so we don't do these stations yet, but my question is how do you do this without crying??!! I'm already tearing up just watching this video 😢
More empathetic videos, please. We do not want to watch this lady without any interpersonal skills. She just says words which are definitely scripted!!!! The actor is already amazing
Imo since this a coaching video I think the Dr did not show adequate empathy. 2ndly she was in a hurry to break the bad news especially after she mentioned that she got bad news. She should have given the man some few more minutes before the actually bad news and few minutes afterwards the actual bad news. She did not check the man's understandimg of what is 'bowel cancer ' The emotional state of the man may not have warranted to continue progressive engagements such that it may require another visit with a significant support person to talk about the way forward in a way he and or the partner will comprehend better
ok i know doc was just following a format but the tone & line of questioning at the beginning seems awfully misleading to me, given what the way the conversation was going to
These are made for OSCE exams, you get around 7mins per station and this is a possible scenario. So the process of breaking bad news has to be time-efficient with all relevant information given to the patient while showing whatever empathy possible in 7mins, then once the station is done its onto the next (even if you feel emotionally annihilated)! Of course in real life you would spend more time to create more space for the patient to process the news and emotions.
I had my annual physical recently and after my doctor’s office got back the results, they said _“she wants you to come back to go over the results.”_ I feel totally fine though and last year they just told me to take 2,000 IU of Vitamin D. So now I’m like, _“WTF is this all about?!”_ So now I’m watching all these videos in case the doctor wants to deliver me some ‘bad news.’ I’ll be ready. My doctor won’t see me sobbing like this poor old bird. Might as well make it easy on the practitioner. I would just need enough time to get my affairs in order, then wait for the inevitable.
The patient acted much better than the doctor 😊😊😊. She should have shown more empathy and be silent for a little time after saying the diagnosis to let the patient process the bad news.
seriously The doctor doesn’t deliver the news well , this man is very good at acting even I on my phone show empathy but that doctor was so cold I don’t think she is a good guide for OSCE training
Professionally speaking, the doctor should not show more empathy? she is not trying to comfort the patient, offering a napkin or a glass of water? At least, that´s what is said to be done. Anyway, great video, thanks a lot
''Happy to give you the results?'' really? When you know it isn't good news. I would never say that before a bad news. Better to skip this and tell him would you like someone else to be with you while we discuss the scans results as I am afraid.............
Really a bad communication! She said I m happy to share results!! Unbelievable! You are going to break bad news!!! Patient is in agnoy and she keeps talking
The only problem I see with some of these training videos is that they keep making it seem like getting diagnosed with cancer is a death sentence or that otherwise the situation is hopeless. I mean, by the time someone has gotten to the age of this bloke, the idea of getting diagnosed with cancer should have already crossed his mind. He didn’t think he was going to live forever, did he? When you get diagnosed with a bacterial infection, the doctor just says, “Here’s some antibiotics … blah, blah, blah.” And off you go. But these are all the loss-leader treatments. The medical industry keeps us healthy until we come down with something serious which kicks a whole bunch of professions into high gear and keeps the medical industry turning. At least he’ll get the chance to say ‘goodbye’ to everyone he loves before the Final Hour.
Give that man a Oscar, He truly deserves it
Absolutely! He nailed it
The actress playing the doctor is just as good too. She even throws on a Scottish accent.
Absolutely agree
How is this gentleman not in movies!? Performance of a generation!
Plus he’s so good at doing that English accent!
Feels a bit strange that the Doctor would say "I'm happy to discuss your results" seems like the exact opposite of a warning shot.
Are you okay to talk about your test results? This one should be perfect
Well, she's British, that's how they phrase things
agree
The actor is way too good 😭
the actor is so good that watching him made me cry. firstly in the angry patient, i felt afraid and now i am feeling sad. such a good actor he is.. 😅 expecting more videos with him.
Thanks for the comment! He is a great actor!
fake empathy is the worst. it totally turns me off to the entire process. the way she handled it seem much more realistic.
He is such a great actor, I literally cried with him :(
He really is!
I feel the doctor could have shown much more empathy in her tone of voice and facial expressions
Exactly what i was thinking
Doctor should have shown more sympathy and functional pauses. That what we have learned.
indeed.
She is acting normally as in real life...I think she did well
I want to know the name of this actor he is amazing 👏 actor made you feel like doing real meeting.
I’m a doctor, not an actor.
You want me to cry too?
that gave me Goosebumps cuz of how sad and emotional this situation is. to be honest, my day would have been destroyed consulting a patient like this
Doctors are human. Do we forget because we’re in a clinical environment and do not remember they aren’t a god, and definitely not infallible? The role player is really good.
The patient is even better.... she seemed pretty cold hearted IMHO lol
Sorry I just realized you meant the role player i.e patient :)
@@rayblade6383 she was very proffesional, not cold hearted
This gentleman deserves to work for GMC of ECFMG as a simulator for OSCEs.
She would have shown empathy and offered tissue paper when he cried
I think silence is very useful. Doctor is like that she is running late and has to tick all the boxes...no sympathy
How can we even use the word- “happy”? The patient is definitely not gonna be happy!
Great role play, really helpful! I would have liked a summary of the steps on one page at the end of the video
Thanks for your comment and the feedback!
Amazing job, huge respect to both of you. The Gentleman is a subperb actor.
Thanks for the comment!
Why on earth would she say "it's very early in your journey" It just confuses the patient, considering his cancer has actually spread. The actor was amazing, but this was a poor breaking bad news station from the doctor
this guy is an incredible actor, it felt so real
he really is!
I would ve cried along if he was my patient
He is too good. I cried 😢
Studying this as i prepare for plab 2 next week. My mum had a similar diagnosis a week ago. Absolutely devastating.
The actor is just too good. The doctor was pretty cold except towards the end.
Good work, thanks everyone involved in making this possible.

Is that a real patient or an actor? he's so in character. awesome!!
He is a good actor
The doctor wasn’t seemingly good for the amount of his great and excellent acting
Man this patient was making me cry too
Actor deserve a award.
An excellent stuff to go through while approach to this sort of cases
Thanks for your comment!
I'm only a 3rd year so we don't do these stations yet, but my question is how do you do this without crying??!! I'm already tearing up just watching this video 😢
the sympathy is not enough
My God, the doctor’s giving me anxiety !

Happy to give you the results !!! are you happy to talk about them !!! are you happy for me to tell you the next steps , well does he look happy ?
ok i know doc was just following a format but the tone & line of questioning at the beginning seems awfully misleading to me, given what the way the conversation was going to
Could you possibly do a capacity history pls
Great idea!
Excellent presentation
Glad it was helpful!
Really helpful...thanks
Glad to hear that!
That was very beneficial thank you
You're welcome! Glad it was beneficial.
The best surrogate ever.
I really love the role player
He's great! Thanks for your comment!
I guess she has shocked the patient without any warning !
Ha! She threw the cancer diagnosis at him so fast without empathy at all...😮
The dr is moving too fast…giving too much information…no empathy

he mad me cry!!!!
Nicely done
Thanks!
The patient acted much better than the doctor 😊😊😊.
She should have shown more empathy and be silent for a little time after saying the diagnosis to let the patient process the bad news.
The actor should be a star
Wowwww it is unfortunate. that man could have been easily an legand in Hollywood if he had the chance😂😂.
The doctor is good I wouldn’t have kept a straight face
Role player is excellent
He really is! Thanks for your comment
I want to know the name of this actor he is amazing 👏 actor made you feel like doing real meeting.
What’s the nurse she mentioned.?
www.macmillan.org.uk Macmillan Cancer Nurses
On our side ppl can meet with dr on same day an here 2 weeks
Love the actor bless him. Is he a doctor?
What is the name of this actor? He is extremely good and needs recognition!
Perfect
How did you people get Michael Caine for this video! 😅
It’s too early in diagnosis to state eol.
Superb
Two weeks is fast?
seriously The doctor doesn’t deliver the news well , this man is very good at acting even I on my phone show empathy but that doctor was so cold I don’t think she is a good guide for OSCE training
My issue is that I laugh at awkward situations as a coping mechanisms
great
Professionally speaking, the doctor should not show more empathy? she is not trying to comfort the patient, offering a napkin or a glass of water? At least, that´s what is said to be done. Anyway, great video, thanks a lot
Who else is here because they have health anxiety and have convinced themselves they have every serious disease under the sun
''Happy to give you the results?'' really? When you know it isn't good news. I would never say that before a bad news. Better to skip this and tell him would you like someone else to be with you while we discuss the scans results as I am afraid.............
💫💫💫
What .. nurses??
Macmillan nurse
The doctor come across as a very cold blooded. Allow that nice excellent actor a break 😅😅
Offer the maj a tissue please
IPS could have been better. She barely used words like "I'm so sorry" "I understand". Felt a bit robotic
she speaks terrible actually no empathy no emotion ... bam bam bam
Can anyone give me his details?
Fantastic patient simulator
Rude emotionless doctor simulation
Give him tissue ,
This dr has zero empathy. I would never go to such person for a consultation.
Really a bad communication! She said I m happy to share results!! Unbelievable! You are going to break bad news!!! Patient is in agnoy and she keeps talking
That's not Antarctica 🐧, but America. That looks like a scam.
She doesn’t have any expression!
