As someone who is into filmmaking and someone who was on the set of the screenshot you used outside... you nailed it. They do everything you did, just with larger equipment. PEOPLE, you don't NEED expensive equipment to get beautiful visuals. It just takes more work with a smaller crew or for yourself. That's the only main difference other than more dynamic range.
This video really gave me a deeper understanding of colors and the color grading process. Well done!

I love the shoot and grade idea. Hardly anyone on TH-cam shows the whole process. You’re totally right about grading your own footage to match a grade you saw online - doesn’t work unless you shot it to match the footage too.
Hey Avery! After 14 hours of DaVinci course I watched couple of your videos on colour grading. That gave me way bigger understanding of practical colour grading. Watched this video already 3 times and I open something new every time. Keep on doing it!

This is my new favorite channel. I've been avoiding trying Davinci as premiere just feels more convenient for vlog editing, but after watching this, it seems so much more powerful so I should probably give it a try.
Thanks Connor! It'll probably feel like a lot of work at first, but I can promise you the results will be worth it! Resolve is a far better tool for coloring than Premiere once you get a handle on the process.

Dark Is One Of The Most Visually Gorgeous Shows I've Ever Watched.
Every frame is a grading masterpiece. Its color grading is sooo beautiful but so subtle that you wont even notice it.

Great tutorial... The two people on TH-cam who really are the best at this stuff are you and Juan Melara, please keep the grading tutorials coming... I wish you could make a tutorial with GH5 log-footage (for us poor blokes who can´t afford high end cameras) and provide tips on workflow, settings and Resolve tweaks for getting closer to this look despite a narrower dynamic range...

Excellent video, Avery. Your approach is unique and illuminating. Definitely at the top of my list for Davinci instructors. One topic I hope you'll one day cover is how to obtain maximum sharpness. I always feel my videos are too soft, regardless of which lens and camera I use. I'll use some of the available sharpening tools, but it still never looks quite right. Your sage advice would be awesome.
This was a fantastic tutorial, and thank you for recognizing the role of wardrobe and production design in the look of a scene. A lot of cinematography/grading tutorials never address that. Loving your videos!

Best DR color videos I have seen. I am learning a lot. I like when you show 2 or 3 versions on the same shot. I like the styled looks but also want to learn more about clean grades that might fit basic commercial work. Great job, keep it going!

Can you do a tutorial on how to light moving subjects? Subjects that are walking across a room, walking through a house, walking outside across the street, etc. Would be a HUGE help. It's the only limit I meet in filming short films

Skin tones have been a mystery to me, you've done a fine job explaining how to approach the skin using midtones, highlights and shadows and how they interact. You have also made me a big fan of Resolve which because of your tutorials I ended up purchased the full version switching away from Premiere Pro for grading. Glad I found your channel and look forward to your next offering.
