Yegor Petukhov, this is the best USA TV Channel, and the commentators are Ben Agosto (the absolutely best commentator for ice-dance out of everyone on all international channels: honest, articulate, and with no 'USA'-bias or personal bias; plus, he "teaches" the ordinary viewer things to look for in both the SD and FD) and Tanith White (who was Ben's former partner and who usually doesn't announce with him; she's equally good, but the "Olympic Channel" usually puts one of them with an announcer who knows little about figure-skating, so this was a big deal: sending the two best U.S. announcers to the European Championships). I much prefer them: they talk very little (or not at all during the performance -- as Russian Eurosport does -- and don't indicate their own personal 'favorites' on air -- as do the Canadian announcers and, more frequently, British Eurosport). Here in the U.S., we are so very glad that either Tanith or Ben are the announcers for ice-dance, and not the forever-talking-throughout-all-performances Tara Lipinski and Johny Weir. Both Tanith and Ben are fair and know what they're talking about and generally don't talk during performances; I consider them the best (and I listen to announcers from around the world).
This is the first time I've heard Tanith and Benjamin together and I love it so much, they are exactly as you describe, none of the "USA no1!!" (when that's wrong) or judgmental snark that CAN happen among other commentators including in my country :(. I've enjoyed both of them so much separately but hearing them together really brings me some joy since I watched them get to the top of US ice dance many many years ago. I always knew Meryl and Charlie would have a career in the spotlight after retirement IF they wanted it, but wasn't as sure about Tanith and Benjamin so enjoying this very much
Su Ki, so glad to hear that so many people are enjoying the commentary of Ben and Tanith. Meryl Davis and Charlie White are doing many other things: traveling the world, skating in the best ice shows (mostly in Europe -- Stephane Lambiel's 'Art on Ice' - and Japan), finishing their college degrees, etc. Charlie does occasional announcing for NBC TV, and, while good, is not quite as articulate as Ben Agosto is. The best person on USA TV for men's singles is Ryan Bradley (again, non-biased, able to explain exactly the technique needed for each jump, spin, etc., and does not talk throughout a performance). Too many announcers at places like British Eurosport (plus Tara/Johnny in USA) do not do their homework and announce wrong choreographer, speak in hyperboles ("best ever!"), give their own personal favorites (instead of just commenting on performance of solo or pairs team on each video) and create a "media battle" (not needed at all!), pitting all the top men against each other, as well as ice-dance teams....perhaps to drum up audience tuning in to figure-skating in general: I believe there are much better ways to create 'good/positive' publicity and ways to attract new fans.
This is exactly what they do in my country. They don't show anything but EC, WC and Olympics so I haven't watched any yet this season but I assume it will be the same this year too. They make mistakes on very easily google-able things like "Kim Yuna has only won WC once" etc. and I get that they can't be right ALL the time during many hours of potentially live broadcast, but the mistakes are just so frequent. They also pit top contenders against each other in unnecessary ways, which annoys me because it adds fuel to annoying stan wars. But the worst thing is the personal judgment disguised as commentary, they don't give certain skaters a chance at all (including someone at the level of Javi!) stating outright "this person isn't artistic" and never expresses the nuance that some can be more artistic than others, it's not an "either or" (which I feel Johnny and Tara also tend to do and I don't know why because surely they should know better).
Su Ki, our broadcast television in the USA doesn't show any figure-skating at all (not even the WC), only a little of the U.S. Nationals, which is why I've been viewing all the Grand Prix Events, Europeans, WC, etc. online for years from various nice people around the world: I watch various channels on TH-cam and that way I can see all my favorite skaters (and new and upcoming ones) all year long. I particularly like ice-dance, pairs, and men's singles; and, thanks to the kindness of various people (mostly from Europe and Japan & the Far East) who post all the videos of all the competitions -- plus the Galas -- I'm able to see what is not on television in the USA. (I just don't like the "trolls" who always post negative or nasty comments, so try not to read the "Comments" section under each video; but I very much appreciate the people who quickly post videos from every competition -- plus wonderful ice shows from Europe and Japan.)
