SR. 37 will be upgraded to I-69 all the way up to Edgewood, Avenue and then I-69 will divert off of SR. 37/Harding St and there is construction on a separate exit for I-69 that will probably be known as Exit 5. I-69 traffic for now will take Exit 4, Harding St/SR. 37 until I-69 (in Indiana minus the bridge to Kentucky) is completed in Fall 2024.
At 7:58, that mileage sign is for SR. 37 since it splits off from I-69 on the south side of Bloomington.
At 8:06 the Ruel W. Steele Highway is the section of SR. 37 from I-465 to Mitchell, IN.
I also wouldn’t be opposed if Bloomington was signed as a control city, but Evansville would probably make more sense.

The white sign that appears at 10:45 can be found on every interstate throughout indiana. In places where there are more than two lanes, the sign will say “right two lanes” or however many lanes. It’s basically a more long winded way to say “no trucks left lane”

During my 2024 summer road trip, part of my loop included a diversion up into the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. I used I 69 west and south between the two interchanges with I 94: from the northeast Detroit exurbs near Sarnia to rural Michigan just east of Battle Creek. Observations:
Overhead controls were basically perfect from the get go: first Flint, followed by Lansing (with Detroit along the 96 concurrency west of Lansing), and Fort Wayne. Mostly, the same can be said about the mileage controls, except for once leaving Lansing. There were multiple times where the mileage control was actually Marshall, aka the town about 10 miles east of Battle Creek where 69 and 94 meet. Kind of a ding against a generally good state…

I’m a big fan of the I-69 Northbound signs to Canada 🇨🇦. It really helps clarify that an international border crossing is ahead with passport control/customs/tolls. Once on the Blue Water Bridge, then I’d sign London. Just past London there’s a split to Toronto on the 401 or Hamilton/Niagara via the 403, so signing Toronto so early might not make sense. London is the 5th biggest metro area in Ontario.

Up until 2001, U.S. 27 was dually signed with 69 from the Current U.S. 127 interchange all the way to Ft Wayne. There is still a sign in Auburn Ind the has 27 mentioned with 69 on S.R. 8 east bound.

Starting at the S.R. 44 and S.R. 252 interchange, the construction begins. The speed limit is 45 mph the above mentioned interchange North to I-465. The first red light after is at S.R. 144 and that is where the mile markers for I-69 stops. The rest of the way to for 465, new overpasses and frontage roads are being built.Roughly a mile south of 465, a newly cleared path for the I-69 and I-465 interchange. The path was cleared due to the fact the state didn't want to buy the land of where the Flying J and Stoops freightliner exist. Originally they were going to level those businesses but moved the path a little further west.

When I-69 leaves Port Huron en route to Lansing, it is signed West since it follows two old state highways which ran east-west: Old M-21 (which ran between there and Holland before the interstate system) from P.H. to Flint, and Old M-78 from Flint to Lansing, which once ran between the two cities, then southwest to Battle Creek and to Sturgis, just north of I-80/90.
Now M-21 only exists between Grand Rapids and Flint, although it is not followed by an interstate highway today; nearby I-96 follows US 16 in its entirety, which will be quite a while before you do that one. And M-78 only exists just north of Battle Creek and runs east through Bellevue before departing off its original highway alignment to go to I-69 near Olivet; it is a small shell of its former self.

Leaving the United States at the Canadian border there is no check point for US customs. That was a toll booth for the bridge. The bridge across the river from Michigan's lower peninsula to Canada are all toll bridges. Canada on the signs instead of a city makes more sense than posting a city name on there. It wouldn't be Toronto anyway. Sarnia is the city in Canada at the border across the river from Port Huron.

Fun fact. Since I-69 in Indiana used to start at I-465, that was MM 0 and it went up from there. So the exit of State Road 37 North was Exit 5. MM 100 was in Fort Wayne. Etc. When they started constructions on I-69 in Evansville, they just increased the mile markers from I-465 north by 200 rather than the actual amount to avoid confusion. So at I-465 it is now MM 200. The State Road 37 exit is Exit 205. MM 100 in Fort Wayne is now 300. However, the distance from where I-69 will begin in Evansville to the original starting point at I-465 is about 185 miles, not 200. So most of the mile markers from I-465 northward will be over the actual amount by about 15 miles. And the City of Fishers still has a road called Exit 5 Pkwy even though it is now Exit 205.

Explanation of no control cities in Fort Wayne:
    1. Most of the 469 bypass is in the city of Fort Wayne proper. The city expanded to include all of its county.
    2. 469 South goes to Indianapolis.
    3. US 24 West goes to a string of Hoosier cities with fewer than 30,000 people, and thence to Peoria. Throughout Indiana west of I-65, Peoria is the control city for good reason: Illinois routed US 24 through a very thinly section of the state east of Peoria where Watseka is the largest town (pop. 4,679) and west of Logansport, IN is our empty quarter.
    4. US 24 East would probably be signed for Toledo.
    5. US 30 West's control city is Joliet, Illinois. The Chicago connurbation starts outside Valparaiso, Indiana, and all the suburbs long US 30 would scream if a different suburb were named the control city.
    6. US 30 East's next control city is Lima, Ohio, and that's being generous. I think Akron is the nearest substantial city.
Better to leave it blank than to list four cities 150-200 miles away.

US 33 goes to Columbus, Ohio to the south and east from Fort Wayne, Much of that section of US 33 is Interstate-grade freeway, but much of it isn't. US 33 goes north and west to Elkhart, a much smaller city than Columbus... and the Indiana Toll Road Concession isn't going to let that become the route of anything near a freeway for a very long time. US 30 angles north of west toward Chicago, and although a divided highway, it is unlikely to be upgraded to freeway for a very long time.

  • @paulbrower4265

My suspicion is that I-69 in Michigan was once expected to go north from Lansing along the route of US 27 (now US 127) almost due north through Mount Pleasant and Clare to connect to I-75 near Grayling, feeding north to the Mackinac Bridge. Until the 1970's, more of the route along US 27 (now US 127) was freeway while only a small part of future I-69 east of Lansing was freeway Had I=69 been built north, then the eastern part of what we think of as I-69 (Lansing-Flint-Port Huron would have been suggested as either I-98 (arrgh! If there is to be an I-98 in Michigan, then let it be through the Upper Peninsula!) or some three-digit route.
Michigan has been upgrading parts of US 127 north of Jackson to Interstate standards. There is no I-175 in Michigan, and I-175 would make sense should I-73 be objectionable. Adrian seems not to want I-73.

    •Port Huron, MI

And I-57 will probably be done before 69 gets built. The large problem, I believe is, neither MS or LA are invested right now with I-69. There will have to be another MS river bridge. Another solution for DFW-bound traffic is extending I-45 to Tulsa, so then travelers from Chicago or STL can take I-44 + I-45 to DFW - easier access.
      I-69 will help Houston-bound traffic more. If you’re coming from the north such as Michigan or Indiana, you have to take I-69 + I-70 + I-57 + I-55 + I-40 + I-30 + US 59 to Houston. With I-69, it’ll a straight shot. I-369 will help travelers from Little Rock & Texarkana that’s going to Houston (I-369 + I-69).
I-57 & I-69 will ease the traffic between Little Rock & Nashville on I-40 - since there’s tons of folks going to Texas, including truckers.

Grand Rapids would also be valid because 69 leads to 96. Fort Wayne and Grand rapids are similar in size. 69 and 96 are now the quickest route between Flint and Grand Rapids.

So... Unless you are from the Lansing area, Most people don't know you don't pronounce it Charlotte that would make sense lol! It's pronounced Shar Lot. Very different we know 🤷‍♂️ Bedford has a small General Motors plant there, the major employer in town.

How many interstate highways does 80 meet with excluding the 3 digit ones with the same number in the last two digits?

Once I-69 is complete from Indianapolis to Memphis, do you think it should just pull an I-57 and be signed straight for Memphis SB from Indianapolis and vice versa?

    • @dvferyance
      @dvferyance 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I would think they would sign Evansville. But from there I could see them using Memphis.

    • @highway2heaven91
      @highway2heaven91 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I would much rather see Memphis than Evansville imo. They should pull an Illinois and just sign Memphis in Indianapolis and then forget about it and sign Evansville for the rest of the state until you reach Evansville.

Control city will be Evansville after Indianapolis on I-69, since it’s one of the largest cities in Indiana. Memphis will be the control city after Evansville, since it’ll be a straight shot through Western Kentucky and most of Tennessee, since Memphis sits at the western-bottom edge of Tennessee.

@@justinsmith2598 Probably but I doubt Evansville will be used NB until Kentucky. Tennessee will likely use Dyersburg.

469 east from 69 northbound south of Fort Wayne should have Toledo and perhaps Lima as a control city. 469 east from 69 southbound should have Lima or Columbus (Ohio!) as a control city.

I heard that I-69 is also known as the "Bill Clinton" freeway.

It would make perfect sense if Arkansas builds their segment of I-69. Side note: Exit 69 on I-40 in Oklahoma is a westbound only exit to Clinton.
