That is my cat, no kidding 😂 !!! Haha this is amazing. As a ‘home grown Amersfoorter’ this was amazing to see. You guys have not seen nearly enough of the city though! U are welcome to enjoy our city again next year, and thanks for visiting!
De "Amerfoortse kei" is not just a boulder. It originates in Scandinavia and was pushed to here by the ice during the ice age about 150,000 years ago! During the ice age the whole north of Europe was covered in ice that pushed also a lot of gravel and sand in front of it. The ice cap ended around Amersfoort where still sand dunes can be found that date back to this period.
I live very close to Amersfoort and come there every day, makes it very cool to see all kinds of places that I personally know. Seeing the comments it feels like this video is only being recommended to people living in the area 😅. Love your videos, keep making them
About to move there from my adjecent town! First vlog I've ever seen of you guys, but love the energy. Thank you for appreciating this city, can't wait to call it home. 😊
Very nice video again. We lived in Leusden, an attached town to Amersfoort. We often visited the market. Now we live in Curaçao and we really mis those Dutch markets..... But we love the weather over here. 😊
Not sure whether you already visited the Kunstmuseum in The Hague, but if not, and you want to see more Mondriaan, they have the largest collection of his work. They often have interesting temporary exhibits as well (e.g. in the past they had Mark Rothco, Art Nouveau, various fashion designers, Escher etc). It's one of my favourite museums in NL 🙂
Great video, I grew up at 20 minutes cycling from Amersfoort. And we grew up learning about Mondriaan. We even had a Mondriaan themed month once in primary school. And coincidentally I ended up living in the Mondriaanstraat in Leeuwarden.
There are a lot of boulders in Amersfoort, not only the one you saw. They are spread all over the city. Some are bigger than that one, and they have been shipped in from different parts of the world. They are not necessarily in the city center though.
As a citizen of Amersfoort, I admit you did a pretty nice tour. Showing the city as it is. (Historical, not too big, not too small and indeed... not too much touristie-things to do). Just a cute city centre. You just missed out on a nice stroll around the old city centre (through the "park") But yeah, pretty much Amersfoort (the historical centre) as it is. Side note 1. Amersfoort was also awarded greenest (as in vegetation) Town of Europe a few years back. Side note 2. for fans of modern architecture, check out "Kattenbroek" A part of Amersfoort where architects were allowed to play 😉
Amersfoort is my favourite city in the whole of Netherlands. Its the only city that i’ve visited multiple times living in my country and still not done exploring. Compared with other big cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag and Utrecht. Amersfoort is a smaller city and you can visit everything you want see historic in one day.
It's Utrecht you can see, not Amsterdam. Direction is west-southwest. They're looking over the sint jorisplein (Saint George square), if you'd be looking in the direction of Amsterdam you'd be looking at eemplein, west-northwest.
@@hylke45 25 or 35km, for me same ballpark ;) was thinking 10km-ish was as far as we could spot.. but seeing flocks of birds from 40km away getting scared/flying up.. longer view lines than I thought we had
hi, born and raised amersfoorter here. Another thing about the boulder, if youre born in Amersfoort you are often called a bolder-puller (keientrekker). Also the boulder was forgotten for many years as i laid buried underneath the varkensmarkt (pigsmarket) but was found when they redesigned it somewhere in the 80s to make the city more bicycle and pedestrian friendly.
"De reden dat deze toren is gebouwd". Now I can't get it out of my head, I have to look up now what the reason for building that tower is. Thanks guys..... homework. fun video.
Thanks so much! De Bosch and this crazy Bossche bol are very much at the top of our "to do" list... We must have one, and we won't try one until we are actually in 's‑Hertogenbosch!!! We went to Brugge Christmas markets a few years ago... and would love to spend a warmer day there at some point!
Quite a few towns and villages have a bolder. The Netherlands doesn't really have rock, they were left behind by gletschers from Scandinavia during some ice age. So they were a bit more special to people back then than to people living among rock.
It was not only voted because of the old city. Being voted based on urbanism it also had to do with making the whole of Amersfoort (including "Suburbs") better and greener for the population. Better to walk and cycle and also what the counsel is doing to improve things.
Nice made, enjoyed watching. What you missed is the house of Johan van Oldebarneveld (google knows more), the Belgian monument (google again) and the Russian war cemetery. Worth a visit. Maybe next time?
Ah! Ah-murs-fort. That's like over 50 years I've been there to visit family, they now moved to Den Helder. Another city you should visit if they still have the Navy Days there.
Nice vlog guys! You both have grown on me ;-) Wonder where you will take us next! You guys drive a car right? There are some destinations that are not covered by all other channels because not so easily accessable by public transport. Would you be interested in such destinations ? (These are within The Netherlands)
Maaaan this video makes me so sad. I was born there and it’s too expensive to stay. I don’t want to be forced out of my home city. When it was announced Amersfoort would be City of the Year I instantly got worried it’ll only become more expensive, pricing out even more Amersfoorters
The reason, the ONLY reason (😂) why our tower isn't the tallest in the country is because the Bishop of Utrecht told us that the tower MUST be lower than theirs (the Domtoren). And because Amersfoort was part of their jurisdiction, we -complained- complied.
Yep, Katrina. You are officially turning into a Dutchy. Complaining about the weather. 😅 I'm 61 years old and STILL don't like the weather of the Netherlands

Agree. Old stuff is boring.
Dutch cities need more modern concrete and parking lots.
Unfortunately, not everyone has any sense of history. That's why so many cities were completely destroyed in the 1980s.
