I very much like Lucian Frued because I see him as a observer, just like Sigmund, but who unlike Sigmund doesn't place himself above the observed. Its like psychoanalysis in front of a mirror. Also from experience Iv heard many say that Lucian is great at painting ugly bodies, that his art is beautiful in the expertise but that the subjects are ugly. I think its more in the line that the subjects are ugly in a aesthetic sense but beautiful in an ontological sense: beautiful as long as they "are", a perfect imperfection if it makes sense
I love his work as he evokes the emotional distance to his subjects. It is never really kind and charming, but questions something. It gives me the opportunity to question my view on the person, the image, but gives a glint behind the public reality. Best example is his portrait of Queen Elizabeth ll. Much smaller than any other official portrait. No pretty pic, but very rough and raw and now in your face. I love him for his willingness to not be impressed at all but just see reality and show it.
I have tried so hard to like this painter’s work. Somehow can’t feel good emotions in my heart. I am a painter myself and of course l appreciate the skill and observation of the artist. But l need to be able to respond emotionally. Others can do so no doubt. I could never live with one of his paintings on my wall. Do you think l am being subjective? Well… it is what it is! 😊 These young painters have injected some warmth and mystery and color into their work!

Freud knew color and light like very few knew. A troubled soul his grandfather would have had a field day. I understand your language, Lucien
