Now I think I know why I like you... you have that same mad love of tech, even old tech that I have. Back in the 80's I picked up no end of old servers at auctions across the UK. If I was still fit and able, this new Covid induced recession would be a great time to do so again.
    Enjoy.

Never mind if it’s old or new, if something is interesting, tech people will automatically get that little smile, just like unboxing a new GPU.
I wonder why it’s the UK in particular where you can find that many Servers. I thought it was a coincidence that I bought it there, but I’ve read that multiple times now. Covid also raised the price a bit, even on eBay.

@@STSYT I am checking a local auction site here in the Netherlands. But even on ebay etc, there are offers from elsewhere in Europe.

Thanks, now I'm working on the 8 bay version of this server because I don't need 12 drive spaces and I love Dell's diagnostic screens they've been putting in.

I picked up a hp p4500 g2 for £150, free shipping, all the caddies, 1 cpu and 24gb of ram. Sold as working and had pictures of the actual server wich look decent with some marks etc. I’m so excited

For around 500 € you can get it with 12x 2TB drives (each drive is not huge but redundancy is the key word here). One R510 like that usually pops up every month. I got mine for way less, but that is a once in a year opportunity ( and even then you have to constantly hunt ). Best wishes going further.

    • @STSYT

A fully equiped r510 wouldn’t be enought for us. Sure with 12x2tb drives in Raid 5/6 would give us some security, but we would make that thing full within a month or two. So i was happy to get an empty one and use the price difference to get a really big drives.
As some point we will finish to fill it up, and at that point we will finaly have some redundancy.
      Best wishes :)

I’m probably gonna be doing this as well down the road. Would love to see you set it up as well.

      I can only recommend it.
I thought about making a setup-video, but thats a pretty boring process.
Install Windows Server 2012 -> create shares and that was basicly it :p
We're using it all day long and can't see a reason to regret this purchase.

Nice video. I found the same love of cheap ebay severs a few years ago, also starting with a 12 bay R510. :')
I'm curious what kind of OS did you end up putting on this thing? I'm surprised you went with just a single disk to store everything. How do you manage data, and what about when you need to upgrade and add more drives? An alternate option would be to have gone with maybe 12 eBay enterprise disks (building for redundancy) as that would make not only speed much better but disk redundancy and ease of upgrading your storage pool.
Obviously it depends on how you're doing all of the above, but now I'm curious. 😁

Right now there's Windows Server 2012 R2 on there.
Though I'm (very) unhappy with it. I am more used to something like Ubuntu Server but decided to go with Windows due to it being officially supported on Dell's side and it was my first time dealing with all of these weird Raid cards and whatnot. The result is that all of our Macbook's/macOS devices have huge connection issues and are thrown off the SMB every couple of hours (Photoshop really enjoys that one)
I thought about getting a bunch of used disks before, but my brain prevents me by not trusting used hard drives which may have been thrown left and right by a delivery guy. Right now we're still running off that single Ironwolf I put in there back when I did the video. (And Yes I know, 0 redundancy ^^). As there is about 800gb left on that Disk, I am currently looking how to get hold of multiple Ironwolfs 18tb disks, throw a Raid 5 on some Linux distro and move all of my Data over. But that's a costly project.
Yeah, that's about it. I hope I didn't shock you with my level of Data security ^^

I JUST bought one for a price tag of only 200$ with rails. On mine I notice the CPU heat sink was loose and one of the mem stick is bad. I'm gonna use it as my TruNAS server with PLEX. The bad thing is I NEED 2 put in 2 cards. One is a Intel NIC card and a LSI card for my array because BSD does not like Broadcom chips that is in Dell servers. I do need to remove the DELL raid to a normal LSI card in order for TrueNAS to work. I found the OFF LEASE equipment to be more reliable and more robust than the home consumer grade stuff.

I whould highly advice you to make a raid configuration, when this drive dies everything is lost. Raid 5 for example.... 4 drives / 4 TB each =16TB.... In Raid 5 you then have 12 TB but one drive can fail and youre still fine nothings lost until 2 drives fail at the same time...

Normally if you’re looking from the back, they are on the right side.
Though you never know what a ebay seller will include 😅 mine came without any hdd bracket

Not quite how it works in a server like that, but I get the idea :p

@@STSYT it depends on how "jank" you want to go, but that absolutely could work as a pool of temporary or scratch storage.
I did that with my R510 for a while using old external and desktop hard drives and it "worked" but wouldn't recommend it for any kind of speed or reliability.
