After Billy gets over his insecurities he gains a tremendous degree of confidence. This confidence threatens the control she has over him so she aggressively tries to break him down again resulting in his suicide.

Ratched wants to infantilize Billy -- and the rest of the men -- and rule the roost. Her evil comes through in her vindictiveness. Dr. Spivey deserves a mention too. Ratched has him wrapped around her finger. He exudes kindness, but also blindness. Ratched impresses him with her confidence and competence, but the doctor cannot see Ratched's managerial malignance.
Exactly, she's evil and it's visible from. The start but we're constantly giving her the benefit of the doubt because it seems like she has the capacity to see. It's once she destroys Billy that it becomes clear that she is well aware of what she's doing and that it's not about the benefit of the patients or the order. It's all about her being the ultimate controller of others. If it were inquisition times, she would have been the one deciding people's destinies and torturing them to death. Bend to me or die is her worldview. Nothing redeemable about her and disturbing once it becomes apparent because it also makes you feel disgusted about yourself and giving her any benefit of the doubt before.

words can't describe the joy i just felt when i opened TH-cam and saw that my favourite movie critique just reviewed one of my all time favourite movies.
I'm surprised the review does not cover the 'baseball game' scene. To me, that is by far the best scene in the entire movie, and shows us how McMurphy can triumph over Nurse R even from his position as a 'captive'. The way he narrates the non-existent game, staring at the blank TV screen, brings tears to my eyes every time, and we get to see a ruffled Nurse R for the first time.
The actor Will Sampson who played “Chief Bromden”, is the man I’m named after. He and my father went to Santa Fe Art College together and were best friends... great analysis by the way.

I remember the very first time (of many) I saw this movie. What stuck with me was Jack Nicholson use facial expressions during the point in which he gets a hooker for one of the young patients. You see only Jack's face has he slowly shifts from satisfaction to dis-satisfaction to anger to confusion....all without saying a word. Brilliant! Thank you for the video!
I literally just watched it again and thought the exact same thing during that scene. Doesn’t say a word, but his facial expressions are great. Mischievous, introspective, satisfied with what he’s done and melancholy. Superb
This is my favorite movie ever, and I am now lucky enough to teach the novel and movie to my high school classes. It is also about man's place in nature, and how we have lost it - a key belief of the psychedelic era, of which Kesey is a major figure. This is why Chief is the perfect narrator. He comes from a reservation, is sent to war (the greatest destructive machine society has ever created) and ends up in a mental ward. It is not until McMurphy comes on the ward that he starts looking outside of the ward - literally - to see animals in nature and the life he could have if he were to reenter nature. In the book it is developed through the machine imagery used to describe Ratched and the institution vs. the nature imagery of outside the hospital, such as geese flying, a dog loping across the hospital grounds, and ultimately the fishing trip, on which the men see their place in nature and return changed.

Now all the patients know the real her and she lost her strong voice from Mcmurphy's attack. Also, Mcmurphy could of left but instead of hopping out to freedom he turned around to check on Billy because he really did care about them.
Great movie. Perhaps one of Jack N's finest acting. Surely a great story. Hard to believe that they actually did labotomies. Such a radical treatment. One of my favorite movies with a dynamic story line.
I saw the movie for the first time recently. To me, there are a ton of parallels between this film and the Shining. They both have Jack Nicholson entering the hospital or hotel via a long drive through an idyllic natural landscape . He thinks he can bend the hotel/hospital to his will but he ends up losing his mind. Scatman Crothers is also in both films. The Native American subtext is also present in both. I couldn’t find any TH-cam videos talking about the interrelationship of these two films but to me it seems so obvious.

In one class that discussed this, the prof said she showed this to students in Germany who didn't like the ending. They felt chief should have saved others as well, not just himself. Interesting how different cultures view the world.
Germans being as they are, I'm surprised they weren't annoyed with McMurphy and agreeing that there must be order. That's my experience of an average German.
I loved the movie. Jack Nicholson light it up! But the book is also brilliant the book is even deeper and stronger in its concept that the authority must be questioned.
I have heard great things about this movie and I need to check it out. Other than that, great essay. It’s really sad that the director, Milos Foreman, passed away last year. RIP Milos.
No back story was given in the film to explain the men. Absent that back story, its just a story about a rebel. The book actually offered some back story
I remember arguing with a fellow educated fellow who I was debating with, what was the best movie of all time. I told him my favorite movie was John Boorman's Excalibur. He scoffed. I told him, though the best movie I ever seen was One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. He just nodded in agreement.
Great movie. The only downside is that, in part, this movie brought about the end of “insane” asylums. Many people are homeless on the streets now who would be safer and better off in a modern mental health facility.
What I now think of is that this movie led almost directly led to the shut down of mental institutions across the country. Today, unless a mentally ill person agrees to the little care they might be able to receive, they often end up on the street. Many use street drugs. So, are they better off now? But at least they are free to live in horrible conditions and die on the streets.
Nice! However I also caught a political meaning overlapping order vs freedom. Keeping in mind that Forman's previous movies in the Czech New Wave are very political, the bird (a cockoo?) on the barbed wire hints to the berlin wall. In addition, there is a scene on tv with a debate on iron curtain. I would not be surprised to analyze many details in this context (baseball on tv, confiscated cigarettes, the patients becoming aware of their condition, etc)
I wonder if this was one of the reasons Ronald Regan closed the mental asylums in the 1980,s, because before seeing this movie my grandmother told me there were many horror stories of testing and experiments on patients at the Red Wing Minnesota asylum that scared the shit outta me at the age of 8 to know that was going on. She told me many Asylums mistreated patients horrible. A couple years later I seen it on HBO and was shocked, sad, hateful of Nurse Ratchet and joyful for Big Chief! Everytime i drove through RedWing I got a nasty feeling about me when I would see that old asylum building on top of the bluff/hill/Cooley Mountain. I think it’s been torn down now
I've always liked this movie and what's not to like? The story starts off kind of light, is always entertaining but gets more compelling as it goes on via what-will-McMurphy-do-next? It's both well cast and well acted; each scene is fun to watch and the longer ones are even better as you watch them develop. You're right on about the structure vs. chaos theme. As the two heavyweights, RP and Nurse Ratched take each other on but it's not a good vs. bad scenario and not a clear winner. Mac dies but he was the kind of person who would never figure like out. Ratched gets to live on but has to go back to her duties with visible battle scars and others knowing that her comments to Billy caused his suicide. Again, not a clear winner. We're all complex folks and both Mac and Ratched have good and bad sides to them. Mac is basically a loser that can't get is life in order in spite of being really funny and kind of a 'good guy.' Ratched is basically a good person but can be petty and officious whenever she wants to be. When I first got into The Simpsons, I saw Bart in the same vein as RP..."I do what I want, when I want." This is a fun movie to watch with a friend or two and then talk about what it all really means. Thanks for this review!

Doing your job doesn't excuse horrible actions. Nazis were just doing their job but at a point you have to say no when you're having a negative impact on other's lives
Do you believe that McMurphy is really a vegetable at the end? A lot of people think he’s faking it again. Chief puts the pillow over his face to smother him and put him out of his misery. But what if McMurphy isn’t comatose? What if he was faking it again? You can see McMurphy really fighting hard to stop Chief. Next time you watch the film just imagine that he’s faking it. It’s even more tragic and tough to watch.
I've just seen the movie and I don't believe that happened. The two of them make deep connection and after the electroshocks McMurphy gives the chief a sign, I think he would've do the same if he could. At first I thought I might just be the medications but then I saw the scars on the head and realize that they messed with his brain. The fact that he struggle while been suffocated might be just the basic instinct of a living been trying to live. But that's just my thought.
After any person has a lobotomy there is so little of the previous "self" left. He wouldn't have enough of himself left to joke round that way, if he even would even remember the previous joke at all. The instinct that all living things have to survive kicked in when he would have been gasping for air under the pillow. The sad thing is once somebodies had a lobotomy thats it for them you can pretty much call them gone. The Chief knew this and wouldn't let the shell of his friend carry on once all his life and "self" had been extinguished.
EneMye but that’s not what happened to him the first time they shocked him. He was fine. Why are you so sure that the second time was worse? Nothing in the film shows that the second time they do it to him is worse. We only think so because McMurphy is acting like a vegetable. But he was acting like that the first time too. Just acting. When the Chief smothers him, McMurphy fights back pretty hard. Would someone who was truly lobotomized fight like this? Probably not. But a man who was joking would act this way. I’m not saying I necessarily believe this theory. But I find it interesting
Silver Game Dog Yeah it’s totally different, people can receive ECT numerous times and make almost full recoveries. Usually a bit of memory loss but it’s rare for any amount of ECT to turn anyone into a zombie. The second time we see the scars on his head. The scars are in the exact place where they make the incisions to remove the frontal lobe from the rest of the brain. This is the difference and why he isn’t faking it the 2nd time. It is surprising the amount with which he fights back against the chief but I guess the answer to that is not to underestimate the fight for life from any living being. In a lobotomised state you probably wouldn’t put together that you were being murdered, you would probs just be struggling for air. There’s a similar situation in Betty Blue if you’ve ever seen that.
It would be way more savage if he was but that really isn’t the story. The chief sees the scars from the lobotomy and knows that his friend is half gone and wouldn’t wanna live that way. But even in that state you would still fight for air. It’s instinct. I just googled it to see if I could try and verify and apparently this is this seen as the “official” ending. Though it’s art so if ppl wanna see it differently then why not I guess _/(“,)\_

Your initial understanding of nurse Ratchet, in my opinion, is completely wrong. Nurse Ratchet demonstrates an underlying cruelty which is synonymous with narcissistic personality disorder. Nurse Ratchet is a malignant narcissist. l was married to one and unfortunately the traits and behaviour are extremely familiar to me.

I saw this movie for the first time tonight, as we rented it. It was 1970s slow. I failed to see the greatness in it. Nothing that clever. I never really had a good time watching at any point. I must remember academy awards are often given for reasons other than entertainment. I must also realize Hollywood values aren't my values.

Milos forman. The Czech genius , is really underrated in the west . The guy is a gem of a director , unfortunately he passed away in 2018.
At least he left behind one great legacy!

Absent that back story, its just a story about a rebel. The book actually offered some back story
I remember arguing with a fellow educated fellow who I was debating with, what was the best movie of all time.
I told him my favorite movie was John Boorman's Excalibur.
He scoffed.
I told him, though the best movie I ever seen was One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
He just nodded in agreement.

Great movie. The only downside is that, in part, this movie brought about the end of “insane” asylums. Many people are homeless on the streets now who would be safer and better off in a modern mental health facility.

The book was a thousand times what the movie was.
What I now think of is that this movie led almost directly led to the shut down of mental institutions across the country. Today, unless a mentally ill person agrees to the little care they might be able to receive, they often end up on the street. Many use street drugs. So, are they better off now? But at least they are free to live in horrible conditions and die on the streets.
Nice! However I also caught a political meaning overlapping order vs freedom. Keeping in mind that Forman's previous movies in the Czech New Wave are very political, the bird (a cockoo?) on the barbed wire hints to the berlin wall. In addition, there is a scene on tv with a debate on iron curtain. I would not be surprised to analyze many details in this context (baseball on tv, confiscated cigarettes, the patients becoming aware of their condition, etc)

I wonder if this was one of the reasons Ronald Regan closed the mental asylums in the 1980,s, because before seeing this movie my grandmother told me there were many horror stories of testing and experiments on patients at the Red Wing Minnesota asylum that scared the shit outta me at the age of 8 to know that was going on. She told me many Asylums mistreated patients horrible. A couple years later I seen it on HBO and was shocked, sad, hateful of Nurse Ratchet and joyful for Big Chief!
Everytime i drove through RedWing I got a nasty feeling about me when I would see that old asylum building on top of the bluff/hill/Cooley Mountain. I think it’s been torn down now
I've always liked this movie and what's not to like? The story starts off kind of light, is always entertaining but gets more compelling as it goes on via what-will-McMurphy-do-next? It's both well cast and well acted; each scene is fun to watch and the longer ones are even better as you watch them develop. You're right on about the structure vs. chaos theme. As the two heavyweights, RP and Nurse Ratched take each other on but it's not a good vs. bad scenario and not a clear winner. Mac dies but he was the kind of person who would never figure like out. Ratched gets to live on but has to go back to her duties with visible battle scars and others knowing that her comments to Billy caused his suicide. Again, not a clear winner. We're all complex folks and both Mac and Ratched have good and bad sides to them. Mac is basically a loser that can't get is life in order in spite of being really funny and kind of a 'good guy.' Ratched is basically a good person but can be petty and officious whenever she wants to be. When I first got into The Simpsons, I saw Bart in the same vein as RP..."I do what I want, when I want." This is a fun movie to watch with a friend or two and then talk about what it all really means. Thanks for this review!

Ive never hated a fictional character as much as i hate Nurse Ratchet.
I think it could be remade more sinister with a more evil and sinister looking head nurse. The one in this film is far too rated G

Do you believe that McMurphy is really a vegetable at the end? A lot of people think he’s faking it again. Chief puts the pillow over his face to smother him and put him out of his misery.
But what if McMurphy isn’t comatose? What if he was faking it again? You can see McMurphy really fighting hard to stop Chief.
Next time you watch the film just imagine that he’s faking it. It’s even more tragic and tough to watch.
I've just seen the movie and I don't believe that happened. The two of them make deep connection and after the electroshocks McMurphy gives the chief a sign, I think he would've do the same if he could. At first I thought I might just be the medications but then I saw the scars on the head and realize that they messed with his brain. The fact that he struggle while been suffocated might be just the basic instinct of a living been trying to live. But that's just my thought.
After any person has a lobotomy there is so little of the previous "self" left. He wouldn't have enough of himself left to joke round that way, if he even would even remember the previous joke at all. The instinct that all living things have to survive kicked in when he would have been gasping for air under the pillow. The sad thing is once somebodies had a lobotomy thats it for them you can pretty much call them gone. The Chief knew this and wouldn't let the shell of his friend carry on once all his life and "self" had been extinguished.

Nothing in the film shows that the second time they do it to him is worse.
We only think so because McMurphy is acting like a vegetable. But he was acting like that the first time too. Just acting.
When the Chief smothers him, McMurphy fights back pretty hard. Would someone who was truly lobotomized fight like this? Probably not. But a man who was joking would act this way.

Silver Game Dog Yeah it’s totally different, people can receive ECT numerous times and make almost full recoveries. Usually a bit of memory loss but it’s rare for any amount of ECT to turn anyone into a zombie. The second time we see the scars on his head. The scars are in the exact place where they make the incisions to remove the frontal lobe from the rest of the brain. This is the difference and why he isn’t faking it the 2nd time. It is surprising the amount with which he fights back against the chief but I guess the answer to that is not to underestimate the fight for life from any living being. In a lobotomised state you probably wouldn’t put together that you were being murdered, you would probs just be struggling for air. There’s a similar situation in Betty Blue if you’ve ever seen that.
It would be way more savage if he was but that really isn’t the story. The chief sees the scars from the lobotomy and knows that his friend is half gone and wouldn’t wanna live that way. But even in that state you would still fight for air. It’s instinct. I just googled it to see if I could try and verify and apparently this is this seen as the “official” ending. Though it’s art so if ppl wanna see it differently then why not I guess _/(“,)\_

Your initial understanding of nurse Ratchet, in my opinion, is completely wrong. Nurse Ratchet demonstrates an underlying cruelty which is synonymous with narcissistic personality disorder. Nurse Ratchet is a malignant narcissist. l was married to one and unfortunately the traits and behaviour are extremely familiar to me.

I saw this movie for the first time tonight, as we rented it. It was 1970s slow. I failed to see the greatness in it. Nothing that clever. I never really had a good time watching at any point. I must remember academy awards are often given for reasons other than entertainment. I must also realize Hollywood values aren't my values.
