- This video covers the entire process of replacing the rear struts on a 2004-2008 Acura TL. This procedure is also very similar to the 2003-2008 Honda Accord.
This is Episode 2 in the Acura TL Series.
Episode 1: • 2008 Acura TL Used Car...
Episode 3: • Honda J Series O2 Sens...
If you don’t have a decent spring compressor, I recommend using complete strut assemblies, or, after you remove the struts from your vehicle, take them to a shop to have them swap the struts over for you. Coil springs can be very dangerous if not handled properly.

YES ... the old Eric .....finally .
Literally!
Hey Now! Grey Hair=RESPECT!!
I've been watching the entire Dad's Truck series while being sick yesterday and through the night. Just want to say thanks for sharing your great projects with us through the years.
Thank you!
Yes bringing back Honda's and Acura Repairs!!
Eric. I understand you’ll never read this. But I also understand those are probably stock struts! And I also understand all of your subscriber count is well achieved!!
If you buy the links the old ones will come right out. If you don't have them you'll need them and your project went from 1 day to 3 days because its either Saturday and the parts place can't get them till Monday afternoon or, they have to be sent or ordered from the warehouse on other side of the country.
Its a rule! (Murphy chapter 7 thing I think).
Keep these kinds of things coming. 👍
Damned links 😂
You are the man Eric. I have saved thousands of Norwegian krones from the things I have learned from your videos. Thank you.
@Edward Oskarsson Bestilte Bilstein dempere fra autodoc.co.no. De fungerer fint.
I also have a recently bought 2008 TL and I look forward to watching you work on this car and follow along. I've always been a huge Honda fan. My 2008 TL is my favorite Honda ive owned so far. Thanks for the video.
This Acura is getting looked after in your hands now. We, the mechanics, know how to take care of any car.
When it comes to a mechanic's own vehicle the labor cost is zero. Parts only.
Brings back memories when I used to watch your old Honda/Acura repair videos all day long in the summer. Cant thank you enough for all the cool shit you've thought me.
It's really good to see a "run of the mill" repair video... I've enjoyed all of your content through years... But I will say it's nice to see basic how-to video. Especially for me personally when I'm in the middle of a year away from family and being able to work on anything automotive or otherwise for that matter...
Finaly a good old "Eric the car guy"-video. Keep 'em coming Eric! Your friday videos makes my day.
Thanks for the comment, but the way I see it, I never stopped posting quality videos. The only difference is this one is on a Honda.
@@ericthecarguy I agree completely on the quality. I've personally watched about all of you're videos. I searched auto repair on TH-cam several years ago and you popped up. Repair videos like this one is what got me hooked, although I love all the other videos too. Especially your father's truck playlist. Looking forward to the rest of this series.
Watching video like the ETCG series makes me a better informed consumer. When I have to go to a mechanic for repair I can visualize to some extent what is being told me about the repair. Now I can ask informed questions.
If you were to remove the sway bar bushings in the rear you can move the whole away bar out of the way and clear the strut. Saves you time and personally I end up fighting the end links for hours and end tearing them apart.
I was super cheesed when i found trouble with the end links almost stripping the shit out of it... then by chance i see your comment while i was looking for solutions. Thanks bud u really came in clutch! Lol
Eric, I'll be installing new " slightly used " rear struts in my '05 TL in the very near future. The April weather has not been warm up here in Montreal, Quebec, Canada for much of the month, and so I've be studying and referring to this EXACT video to help me get the job done right without struggling !!! I HOPE ! Thank you for making this video for us TL LOVERS !! Cheers from Montreal.
Don't be a #cheapskate, bro.
If it wasn't for this video I never would have done my rear struts . Awesome video dude !
Yes, The original ETCG working on a Honda Motor Company product. Welcome back
I was wondering how you were going to go about compressing the springs, and that spring compressor is so awesome! Great video! You covered it all.
Thank you 🙏🏾 Eric,I was about to tow this seat out.😂😂😂!I appreciate your help my brother.
Eric what the heck. Back in your old dungeon of a shop we watched you dangerously remove Honda Springs from struts on your workbench. And now you're telling us that we probably shouldn't mess with it. Oh man I thought we were supposed to stay dirty! 😉
Great job Eric. These procedures will help me a lot in a near future. I have on 2006 and one 2007 Accord with original struts. I'm waiting for my time to change them.
Eric you have to give us a before and after driving impression with the new struts.
Thanks for the link, can't believe you get the whole oem assembly for just $200 dollars. That's one of the reasons I prefer honda products. I had a early 2000's Toyota avalon and that same oem assembly of parts cost over $400(online dealer pricing). That year avalon was basically a camry. In fact KYB, Monroe have the same part# for both. The final blow was when I got the struts they said made in mexico, by sachs. I realize large manufactures have invested heavily in mexico and they are producing good products, but Japanese made in preferred especially when you consider the high price.
Honda is just far more committed to provided oem parts at reasonable pricing.
This was immensely helpful, thanks. That f'in sway bar link still appears in my nightmares sometimes...
Nice job as usual Eric.Good advice about replacing the lock nut on top of the strut.
Thanks for the video, I have a 07 that just had a shock blow out. Had the work done back in December and occasionally heard a little noise/rattle. No lie, I watched this video today and it was so nice outside decided to wash the inside windows. When I went to the back seat I felt the seat move. They didn't re-tighten those two bolts. I would have had no idea why.
As always this was a great video and thanks for all the info, I did this on my 07 TL and the hardest part was the rear seat. Odd design but it is a great car.
Thanks again Eric! for years your Honda wisdom has hlepd me out.
Great video! As an owner of a 04 diamond white 165 on the clock now but at about 124 I have been trying to diagnose a inside wear on the tires and after alignment has been done proper tire psi rotation. I have came to the conclusion that the issue is the lower control arm bushing. Long story short Plzz lower control arm bushing video
Such a good resource, swapped out a rear shock this afternoon. I had to cut off my endlink though as the allen keys stripped out so that was fun.
Great job sir. Wish I would have had a strut spring compressor like that back in my day.
one thing I used to do was put Dawn dishwashing liquid on the bushings before I reinstalled. It would keep the squeak and put a protective coating over the rubber bushings.
I do not know if anyone still practice that
Eric, wire brushing the end links with a steel wire brush before spraying will make it a much easier job. It takes just a few seconds. Second,, I fill the Allen socket of the end link with a dab of grease when reassembling...prevents corrosion and stripping it the next time. Those Allen sockets collect water and dirt like it's nobody's business, which can't happen if it is already filled with grease.
OMG!!! Eric DOES still work on average cars!!! YES! More please!
A lot of work. I might have to take my Acura to the mechanic. Love your videos
As someone who just got a v6 accord I love this series
These are the videos I miss from you Eric... let's go to work...
thanks to Brian, filmed like in the old times
Excellent camera angles! Really helps us understand how to do the job.
Eric you are wonderful. Like the good old days. Perfect
Thanks for the previous notice about the Haynes manuals. I got Christmas presents for the family that make sense.
Moe
Eric- So glad you did this video. Great help. Concise and professional.
As someone who recently bought a 3rd gen TL. More of these plz
This is my favorite style of TL. It is just a good looking car.
You doing a great job
WoW Eric is finally back. this is the video i am looking for. hopefully no more truck:).
Hell yea ... Been waiting for quality videos on this car! Keep it up
I counted no less than five arms on one side in the back! Together with the full damper this must be one smooth riding vehicle!
I love those cars by far the best TL Acura has ever made I want a TL type S so badly with the 6-speed manual either an 07 or an 08 such nice cars
There are plenty of them out there.
Me Too,Type S Had the Bigger Eng.,Stainless Exh.W/ Quad Tips , & Sportier Low Profile Rims & Tires. But Not Sure Auto Trans. Are Much Stronger Than Reg.TL' s,Which Are Common W/ Issues ,After 125-140,000 MLS.

Thanks for showing us stuff like this. I agree with you on using Honda OEM struts.
When you said the comment about having the nut back on and it being a sigh of relief, I relate to that so much. Lol
This video was really helpful. Thanks! I did the fronts the other weekend and needed to get the rears done. You definitely got lucky on the swaybar end links. ONE of the nuts came off for me and I had to sawsall the others off. I ended up replacing them with the Moog end links, which appear to be a better design than OEM anyway.
Awesome job Eric! I love that generation of TL.
Hello Sir, I have a problem with Ford explorer 2011 EATC Not working, mo power on the center dash console, the MFT works but doesn't control the AC system. Plus as soon as I start the engine, the blower motor runs steady blowing heat out through the defrost, this problem started after taking the car to car wash,
I have uninstalled the center console and test the wiring harness for power and it does have a good ground and positive power, but the touch function doesn't work, no button on the center Console such Hazard, eject and all the climate control button to knob nothing works,
Please can you give a good place to focus my diagnostics to get this issues fixed?
Love your spring compressor
Eric The Car Guy is the best!
I used kyb struts on my Honda accord and I love them.
If you look real close at the oem ones you'll see KYB on them lol
OEM kyb from Acura on Amazon: 200+
Kyb gas shocks (IMO better) on amazon: 68
Hell koni yellow adjustable rears are 165.
I got kyb gas myself.
Regardless, good video and steal on the car. 200 bucks is insane
Honda does NOT us KYB, they use Showa.
@@ericthecarguy I always use Honda fluids and almost always try to use honda OEM parts when replacing things. If I go non Honda I at least get something of knowingly decent quality. My honda gets bitchy if I stick cheap parts on her lol.
kyb is alright. Bought some Rock Auto discount gabriels for my del sol. If you park it overnight she will bounce like twice until the shocks get pumped up. Really good gabriel.
definitely boosted my confidence to do it on my acura but it's a gen b4 or 2 before this TL, but honda don't change much
Awesome, fully detailed excellent review!
The 4G TL seat removal was a royal PITA, not sure what is worse to deal with for reassembly - the friction fit bar on the 4G rear seat or the 3G's top seat bolts.
Hello Eric Thank You for everything and Happy Holidays to you and your family!
Thank you! Happy Holidays to you as well.
I love your throughout detail and explanation on installation of parts.
Great watching someone who know what they are doing .
great video Eric thanks for showing how to install strut.have same 2007 acura TL.
Nice TL. I just got the 2011 TSX! Very happy to watch this series to see some pointers. Yes I know they aren't the same but still, good info none the less
Ace work, Eric!
Strut replacement - a dark area in my knowledge! 🛠
Nicely done. Needle nose vice grips are a must for work like that!
I've had to do this job twice on my own TL. Always use OEM struts. My cheap eBay struts lasted 8k miles before the lower bushing separated and caused major clunking and tire wear.
Ben a couple years since I watched! Nicely done Eric!
Eric is back! No more Fairmont. Subscribed again.
Glad you’re back Eric!
Hey for the back seat you don't need to take those screws out on the back part just losen the screws then lift the seat up then slide seat over screws..
he said that about 4 times lol
I've missed videos like this.. thank you sir
3:03 basically what I did to my wife last night is demonstrated here.
You removed her 10mm bolt? What were you trying to fix?
A little finger action
Loosening it with a power tool haha good one :D
jajajaja
Nice work there Eric, I always enjoy your videos!!
Very true factory parts from honda cost more but they last much longer is its cheaper in the long run great video !!!
Dude, fantastic video. Think God there's a helpful video without all the theatrics and also adding the extra suggestions. if you only had one now about control arm bushings on the same car. Wait, do you?
This video convinced me to let someone else do it. The spring compressor things- dangerous!
TH-cam unsubbed me!! WTF?! Sure I hadn't clicked a video in about two months but I have been SLAMMED at work. Some new YT annoyance? Ugh. Also, "He's more beard than man now." ;) I really do like this return to more old school ETCG. A dude fixin random shit. We learn stuff. We're entertained. Solid.
Gosh I’ve been doing it wrong for years, next time I’m with my lady I’ll remember to bring my impact with extension and 10mm
Your videos are always very helpful for us do it yourself guys..
Excited for the finish product
Nice work Eric looked pretty easy and not that hard ...Thanks
Very informative, do you have any ideas on rear seat back removal on 2000 Acura tl? Don't see any slits on top and headrests are stationary
Maybe a small table/cart near your press and spring compressor would be beneficial as there's usually multiple parts when using either of those machines. Great video as always!
is there an EricTheCarguy subreddit to submit memes? Im only kidding, i enjoyed this video and im jealous knowing how cheap you got this one
not too sure if anyone else said this but when doing your sway bar end links ,, take you angle grinder with a wire wheel and clean the thread first!! makes a world of difference for the 2 min extra it takes
Eric,
My girlfriend got mad at my lack of any sense of direction...
So I just packed up my stuff and right...
It's so awesome to have access to all those tools.😮👍👍😀
Yes it is. Thanks for the comment.
Great install and demonstration video Eric
Thank you!
We love you Eric. Happy Everything, .
I have a 2010 TSX and I'm looking ahead to change all my struts soon. I replaced my rear arms about the same time i bought the car at 104k. I replaced front arms, drive shaft, bearings, but the only thing i didn't replace were my stabilizer links. . I don't have any power tools so yeah I only using hand tools which really makes things very slow. Looking at this video I really need a hydraulic car lift lol. My 4plex has the room. I bet I could totally make some money haja
Funny thing you mention the seat belts lol...I needed to replace my rear speakers and had to take the entire rear interior out (no bueno) and when putting the seats back I forgot the center seat belt and ended up losing a screw 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Fascinating you make it all look so easy
In the Acura service manual, they have the rubber bushings opposite of what you show in the video. The rubbers are pyramid shaped, and when installed they should form a football shape. The way it look like you installed them is more hour glass shaped.
It seems intuitive to do it the hour glass way like you did, the mount plate looks like they should go in the hour glass way, but the manual calls for the opposite. Doing it the hour glass way causes the rubber to flair out as you tighten the top nut, deforming it, causing accelerated wear.
Smashing repair, that will make the back end bounce less and a better bump absorption.
Well worth replacing :-D.
Indeed. Thanks for the comment!
Classic Ericthecarguy is back... yaahh
This video help me alot the only thing it was the where is the nut at the bottom is easier if you remove the bolt next y
to the nut that is weld it you can remove it and is easier to put the strut back
Something tells me the boy has done this before 👍👍
Chuck Norris would just compress those springs with his fingers.
Hi Eric love your videos. I have a quick question for you what do you think about the KYB's front struts for my 2009 Honda Accord V6...are they any good?
I'd never do it, but it was fun to watch.
eric i watch your videos for quite sometime now and notice you seem to be a big honda/acura fan regardless your years of being a certified tech, is honda that good do you honestly recommend them or does it come down to prefence cause i like all certian makes and models
Thanks for the great video Eric!
Nicely done, Eric.
