Absolutely brilliant interview. Brought back so many memories of watching him play and I was at so many of those he mentions including being in Bullens Road Paddock when he was fouled by Willie Bell. I went down to Wembley for the '66 is a Final but couldn't get a ticket. Great to hear him talk and confirm my own views of all the players he mentions.
When I started watching Everton regularly in 1960-61 season I always thought players like Derek came along frequently. His superb forward play would show how limited many players are today. Once saw Derek break from the half way line into the Leicester penalty area at the Stanley Park end, and hammer the ball past Gordon Banks in September 1966 in a 2-0 win. It was identical to his winner in the 66 cup final How lucky we were to have Derek, Alex Young and Roy Vernon in the same team. All three had a few seasons left in them at Everton, before Harry Catterick sold them.
Legend
What a gent 👏
Saw Degsy play many times and I'm a better man for that! Still got his autograph and he can't have it back...
