BERLIN WALK | ZEHLENDORF, Clayallee (for Cal 🇺🇸;-)

- Zehlendorf, an idyllic district in southwest Berlin, was once home to the Allied Forces stationed in Berlin during the post-war period. The district's picturesque streets and leafy avenues were dotted with Allied barracks and facilities, including the well-known Andrews Barracks on Clayallee and the Oskar-Helene-Heim.
Today, decades after the Allies left, the American flair can still be felt in Zehlendorf. The extensive parks and quiet residential areas are reminiscent of the time when American soldiers and their families lived here. The architecture of some buildings still bears the style of the American occupation, and the streets are lined with shops and restaurants that are a reminder of the cultural diversity that the Allies brought to Berlin.
The Oskar-Helene-Heim and Clayallee in particular are living witnesses to this past. Clayallee is lined with charming shops and cafés that offer a unique mix of American and German culture. The Oskar Helene Home, once a US Army hospital, has been converted into a popular place to live and relax and continues to contribute to Zehlendorfs cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Zehlendorf therefore remains a place where the history of the Allied occupation is still present and a touch of America can be felt in the middle of the German capital.

I was in the Army 1969 to 1972. This was near the Headquarters. Also like the central area for military life in Berlin.

It was a very good time for Berlin people too when the American Forces stood in Berlin. I remember good the AFN Radio Forces Network. So special and so good! We never had a Radio Station in germany like AFN! But the memory of the US Army in Berlin is still in our heart and brain! Always positive!

Hallo Irina! Als 13-jähriger fuhr ich in der Clayallee mit dem Skateboard herum. Als 15-jähriger später mit dem BMX-Fahrrad. Atmosphärisch war das für uns Kinder damals sehr interessant, weil ein kleines Stück Amerika vorhanden war! Der "PX" Supermarkt, der leider nur dem US-Militär zur Verfügung stand, durften wir nicht betreten. (Wir wollten, aber wir durften nicht herein!). 🤷🏻♂️
Wir verbrachten viel Zeit in Zehlendorf, wei Friedenau und Steglitz zu lanweilig war! 😅
Ich habe den Spaziergang sehr genossen. Und demnächst werde ich wieder dort filmen. Allerdings dann in der Nähe der Freien Universität! 👍🏻

Ja Zehlendorf wird jetzt öfters gefilmt. Ich warte nur noch ab, bis die Bäume blühen. Das kann nicht mehr lange dauern! 😃
On Clayallee is the Allied Museum; the last "hut" used at Checkpoint Charlie is there (the one you see in all the videos being craned onto a truck and driven away). Its locked so you can't go inside but you can peer in through the windows
Next weeks i will walk in Zehlendorf and Grunewald again, then i try to enter the alliet Museum. I hope movie making inside is allowed!
Ach, da wollte ich doch eigentlich mitgehen, auf den Spuren meiner ersten Berlinreise als Schüler 😁 Ich wäre eigentlich diese Woche in B. gewesen, musste aber aus verschied. Gründen absagen.
Das können wir gerne auf ein anderes mal verschieben. Da gibt es noch mehrere interessanter U-Bahnhöfe, und die Gegend drum herum ist auch super! Sag einfach Bescheid wenn du da bist.

What you call Andrews Barracks, was not Andrews. It was closer to McNair.
Mc Nair Barracks are in Lichterfelde, Görzallee! The Place i visited is the Headquarter! i thought it is Andrews barracks. i correct text later! Thank you for that hint! 👍🏻
