Found this video because I got my hands on tons of raw sapphire, ruby, garnet and emerald. And needed help identifying them properly before sending them to be cut.
I was gifted a rather large ruby recently from a good friend. I think he found it in Utah. He said its worth a lot. It's raw uncut & I'm guessing 80+ carat. It's dark red, black & some purple. After doing more research, I think it may even be red diamond? An suggestions or ideas? Any tips to getting an appraisal without getting ripped off? And suggestions of an appraisal in the MT area?

In one particular video when they were describing the flowers and gems of the months of the year… They showed a rock that looked exactly like mine and claimed it was a ruby. Is there any way you could describe it?
@@bigsky445 that's an awesome story I'm sorry I couldn't reply sooner I didn't see your notification. But to find a nice real red big garnet is pretty rare especially if it's capable of producing gems. Not all garnet material is suited for cutting or jewelry due to impurities and fractures so finding real nice pieces is very cool indeed.
I have felt the same texture on freshly dug and cleaning them... Reminds me of some powerdy goldish texture or lizard skin lol ...im courious about why and how as well

So i bought a raw sapphire and a raw ruby but when i got home i forgot which one was which so i did a uv light test and the that was ruby had glowing pinkish spots the sapphire didn't glow and it looks similar to a rubby but it isn't
You habe some great finds. And you are absolutely right about how hard it is to cab. Although the star sapphires and rubies are worth the time and diamond grit, to polish instead of trying to facet them. If you get a good Star, its value is higher than most faceted stones. I have one 83Ct. Medium blue, translucent 5point Star, that will help me retire comfortably. It seemed to take forever to polish, but its worth every hour!
I know you're right but it's just the overall diamond grits that we have at our lapidary club we don't have anything over 800 idk y. But its impossible to cab corundum there, but on our flat laps we have up to 4000? I'll see if I can press for a extra fine belts cause I know it's worth it, but it's based on whether it's in the budget or not as well as a vote that's why I don't really cab I would if I could.. I want a nice star one day.
Ok first and foremost you look at the topography and history of the land if your surrounded by mineral rich beds then it's all about what's there. holding them up to the sun and trying to see yellows, blues, orange, greens, pinks, or red. usually small rounded super hard colorful rocks are something good so you never really know what you've got until you do a scratch test and eliminate all other possibilities. you can find all kinds of cool stuff in the river beds but unless they're kind of known for having sapphire in them it's usually a gamble
I got a fat 174 ct rough sapphire w matrix still on it. What’s the best way to get the matrix off and get to see what’s in the middle. I’m betting it’s nice inside.
Depends on whether it's better using a diamond saw and grinder/ lapidary saws and lapidary grinders then to rather chisel it off if you're not really experienced, because impacting a piece with force isn't the best way of removing excess material and preserving a nice gem. If it's already a nice display piece already it could be worth a lot as is.
@@FirstCallToTheUniverse an acid that dissolves the host rock but leaves the gem unaltered would be my guess. Caution though acid can be really sketchy to work with☠️☠️☠️
The reason these stones were a $ a lb is because that's all they are worth. None of them are any good for faceting or cabbing they are just specimen pieces cool to have but don't really have any monetary value
not all want a gem quality..not all can pay for it..but in that price on the video with that name of stones you can make as much money as a gem..what i mean...above you have some stones that have heavy names..like ruby if you polish it and put it in a silver ring you can sell it 100$ easy..it cost you 5..thats marketing mate...no one can tell you its not a ruby..no one will tell you its ugly or cheap...you have all the tools to make good money
For one real rough corundum is still valued. Cleaned up can still reward your efforts. This video was to show what it looks like rough not all cleaned up and even if it's not the most transparent it can still be utilized and btw people love specimens.
Hi well first off do a quick check of the area for rock clubs, if there are non then the only way to do it is to follow the streams, rivers, clay soil, hard rock, you'd be looking for pockets with potential crystal development sometimes it's right in the open if you look close enough. But crystal hunting is a lot of hours spent finding nothing until you do. But finding other cool rocks could be potential for value as well if it looks uncommon and it's different than what you're used to seeing in the area it's worth following up on. @@seeeeeee8 No unfortunately Diamond is much harder than corundum the scale from a 9 to a 10 on the MOHs scale is pretty great they are two completely different materials

well no, sand consists of mostly quartz so it cannot scratch sapphire you should check out diamond powders which you sprinkle it on a flat surface like wood or metal with a little water to make into a paste the higher the grit number the finer the grit and yo really polish up a sapphire it ends in the above 4000 grit.

You’re right to look at the small odd stuff no one else notices. I bought a sapphire scratch bag (Aus) thinking it would be a fun gimmick but surprisingly it had what appears to be sapphires. They’re identical to most video finds but nobody mentions the look, touch, feel, weight, details of their appearance. I immediately noticed how different they are to the white, muddy-like soil, nothing appears to stick to them, they feel heavier & the colour, amazing. Although they appear black with even a metallic shine or waxy feel but tough as steel so I’m fairly certain but I’d love to know if they are rough sapphires. I’ve collected around 60 stones of all sizes & colour (green, fiery red, tan, blue). Also, some commenters, what’s wrong with your spelling? Surely you went to school? It’s difficult to work out what your words mean. Communication is part of our basic evolutionary process & being offended by words isn’t going to kill you, life’s a challenge to be embraced, fuel for your brain. Gemstones are elusive and travel its amazing where they hide sometimes. Some of the most uninteresting rocks ive had and just "split it to see" have had the best surprises from a cheap parcel nobody looked at and stored for years. Its hidden otherwise you wouldn't have it! Maybe a quarter of the jems sold in the world are lost or thrown away thinking they're fake. It broke fell off or lost at beach or its costume jewellery grandma's dated fashion just throw it!😮 Study stones keep your eyes peeled! It'll put you in a position for luck. And yes things are hard if your not in the loop! Create your own and have fun.

I don't recommend just cutting them open. It depends really some pieces can be faceted, and some can be cabbed but you need very fine 1200+ grit diamond grinders for the final steps to really get the job done though, and if you don't have the equipment it can come out sub par and not really look that great. Honestly It all depends on the quality of the material. How clean is the piece how translucent it the material, is it heavily fractured included or flawed, does it require someone more skilled to cut, carve, or cab the piece for you which could cost you extra? Really my approach is experience and working with other stones first will not only give you more understanding of how to envision a design but how to execute it more smoothly and cleanly. I suggest looking up local rock clubs in your area and checking out what they do and try getting involved if your interested in cutting and all that first. I'm just telling you from experience I've gained respect for precious material because you only get one chance to cut shape and design stone so be sure to make the right choice because with a little time and experience what could be a good idea at the time may be something you kick yourself over later. Just knowing what I do now from what I did back when I made this video is even greater so I need to make a part 2 and discussing questions like this. I even have more of an appreciation for keeping a stone natural and just enjoying it the way nature created it and that is something I tried to capture in this video but there is a lot of unanswered questions and facts I need to address and bring to light. Thank you for the question I appreciate your interest in my videos and hopefully this answered a bit of what you were asking and I will get to specifics very soon.
I get mine from a sapphire mine out of nation. They just sell me the low grade ruby and sapphire, for almost nothing. All I really do is pay the shipping.

I wanted to hit on some points I missed and do a black light test, but on camera it just wasn't working. It was too bright or too dark, just wouldn't come out right I'm still trying to figure that one out. I have a amazing piece of wat a gemologist has told me is the largest sample of corundum hes ever seen OR quitte possibly heard of i was going to attach a picture but cant seem to figure it out and very nice info in ur video man. Rubies r by far My Favorite Gemstone & they r by far the most not seen.....

Well sorry this is a video for the common rock collector. This is strictly my interpretation with my own personal experience at the time when I too was first starting out. Tight loops means jewelers, Commercial lapidary facilities, and private buyers. I know of a place now too but the difference is they sell rough sure but it's in bulk and for very good money, And it does get bought out as soon as it hits the floor. I mean sure I've seen better images and videos after I made this but I wanted this to be more for identification purposes more. So people could compare and share their finds. And as for the GIA stones that are submitted usually are cut first, rough stones hide imperfections and flaws. Their job isn't only to Id the material but to grade it as well. The thing is you pay 100 dollars per stone to get a certification to verify and grade it but if it's not worth even that, it's not worth it to you or them time and money wise either. I'm curious about the rough you have found online, please share a link so we can check it out, I'm not doubting you I'm just realistic, and mine is all natural unheated, untreated, rough corundum and not small little pieces real developed crystals.

You can buy rough ruby online cheap the skill has to do with heating them properly for maximum clarity the rubies at least then you need to polish and cut them then put them in jewelry then they can make you money cause if it isn't for making money there's really nothing special man go online cheap ruby and sapphire from all around the world rough for cheap you can even get rough diamonds for cheap online lol closed loop man come on at least Google the shit you talk about knowing sorry but for real.
Yea most of what you find online is not only treated but lead glass filled as well. To find rough decent natural red decent grade corundum it is not that common at all. And it depends where it comes from as well there's a difference from each location. In some places everyone gets searched and the good stuff is taken by those in charge of the area as well as quality and size matter too because anything that can't be used in valuable jewelry is sold to locals, and anything that can is held onto and used in expensive pieces.

It feels very cold and smooth on most of the pieces. Not so much rubbery but dense and very hard.

How do you know without a flashlite, for example walking by a river bed, how do you know what to pick up?...

if you treat them and polish them they become amazing
show me one that looks amazing. heat treating and glass filling isnt going to improve these. no treatment will improve them to get gem quality stones

No it can’t Diamond is 10 and sapphire is like 9 on mohs scale. Close but diamond is always hard, more dense.

I have a bunch of ruby..just like yours. Is there anything to do with them? Cut them open?
I don't recommend just cutting them open. It depends really some pieces can be faceted, and some can be cabbed but you need very fine 1200+ grit diamond grinders for the final steps to really get the job done though, and if you don't have the equipment it can come out sub par and not really look that great. Honestly It all depends on the quality of the material. How clean is the piece how translucent it the material, is it heavily fractured included or flawed, does it require someone more skilled to cut, carve, or cab the piece for you which could cost you extra? Really my approach is experience and working with other stones first will not only give you more understanding of how to envision a design but how to execute it more smoothly and cleanly. I suggest looking up local rock clubs in your area and checking out what they do and try getting involved if your interested in cutting and all that first. I'm just telling you from experience I've gained respect for precious material because you only get one chance to cut shape and design stone so be sure to make the right choice because with a little time and experience what could be a good idea at the time may be something you kick yourself over later. Just knowing what I do now from what I did back when I made this video is even greater so I need to make a part 2 and discussing questions like this. I even have more of an appreciation for keeping a stone natural and just enjoying it the way nature created it and that is something I tried to capture in this video but there is a lot of unanswered questions and facts I need to address and bring to light. Thank you for the question I appreciate your interest in my videos and hopefully this answered a bit of what you were asking and I will get to specifics very soon.

LOl I wanted to make a second video and share another piece I had but it was dirty so I didn't know what it was yet. I wanted to hit on some points I missed and do a black light test, but on camera it just wasn't working. It was too bright or too dark, just wouldn't come out right I'm still trying to figure that one out. Your the second person to mention NC corundum, so I do want to see some good examples of peoples finds. what do you mean salted?

Well sorry this is a video for the common rock collector. This is strictly my interpretation with my own personal experience at the time when I too was first starting out. Tight loops means jewelers, Commercial lapidary facilities, and private buyers. I know of a place now too but the difference is they sell rough sure but it's in bulk and for very good money, And it does get bought out as soon as it hits the floor. I mean sure I've seen better images and videos after I made this but I wanted this to be more for identification purposes more. So people could compare and share their finds. And as for the GIA stones that are submitted usually are cut first, rough stones hide imperfections and flaws. Their job isn't only to Id the material but to grade it as well. The thing is you pay 100 dollars per stone to get a certification to verify and grade it but if it's not worth even that, it's not worth it to you or them time and money wise either. I'm curious about the rough you have found online, please share a link so we can check it out, I'm not doubting you I'm just realistic, and mine is all natural unheated, untreated, rough corundum and not small little pieces real developed crystals.

You can buy rough ruby online cheap the skill has to do with heating them properly for maximum clarity the rubies at least then you need to polish and cut them then put them in jewelry then they can make you money cause if it isn't for making money there's really nothing special man go online cheap ruby and sapphire from all around the world rough for cheap you can even get rough diamonds for cheap online lol closed loop man come on at least Google the shit you talk about knowing sorry but for real.
Yea most of what you find online is not only treated but lead glass filled as well. To find rough decent natural red decent grade corundum it is not that common at all. And it depends where it comes from as well there's a difference from each location. In some places everyone gets searched and the good stuff is taken by those in charge of the area as well as quality and size matter too because anything that can't be used in valuable jewelry is sold to locals, and anything that can is held onto and used in expensive pieces.
