I still have, and use, a early 2006 Mac Mini 1.5 solo. I upgraded the ram, replaced the HDD with a SSD and upgraded the CPU to a Intel T7600 2.33GHz. It currently sits in my basement but I still use it whenever I need a computer. That little Mac is awesome.
Have an old mac mini not working but think the HD might not be issue so needed to remove it so I can attach it externally to another Mac and have a look and see if it is working and recoverable. This guide is old now but still an excellently clear and effective guide. Thank you !
Thank you. I have been given a Mac mini with a duff hard drive. I intend to replace it with a Samsung evo 240 gb ssd. This video has been most useful in guiding me around how to get this little sucker apart :-)
WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I NEEDED YOU?!! Just kidding. I followed another TH-camr's sped up video & ended up breaking the ribbon connector off the interconnect board. Then I found your clear & concise video & realized I would've been done yesterday without having to order a refurb board off eBay. Live and learn. Thanks for the help!
There's a theoretical limit of approximately 127TB on these systems, however, it's unlikely that we'll ever make drives that large in these styles to be used in this system. In other words, for the next 10 or 15 years you should be fine.
If we get to 127TB Hard Drives, and they SOMEHOW can still run on the good old Mac Mini (because software. Because Sata 6Gb) it would still be pointless as I'm sure by that time, Mac Mini's like this will be trash.
Sollux Captor While this is true, just remember: In the Pentium II era, nobody would have ever fathomed a 500GB hard disk, let alone multi-terabyte drives and solid state disks, and some """crazy""" people still use Pentium IIs and put these wonders of modern electronics into what is now considered ancient .
A brilliant video. Simple yet with lots of information and easy to follow. I am going to upgrade my RAM first with 4GB as I already have it (don't mind if 1GB not used). Then the HDD. But I want to know how to install the right OS as I don't have any OS installation disk. Thanks iBookGuy. Keep up the great work.
Liked it. It worked. However I would recommend finding something non-metal to pry open the case, because it caused a lot of scratching for me. Try to find and use the dimples when prying it open. That will make things easier. Also, when closing it up, be careful not to bend the metal valve-like thingies at the back. I bent them, I could not bend them back in shape completely, and it closed up crooked.
You...are...awesome! Thank you! For some reason, all the other videos made this seem really difficult. I gifted my mid-2007 mini to my dad, and we've been upgrading it step-by-step. It's pulling the ol' "Grainy screen, 'you must restart machine" message, I'm hearing I have to run a diagnostics and the RAM may be the issue
This video was so concise, simple, easy to follow and covered everything I needed to upgrade my RAM. Cheers. No need to get frustrated and cry, just follow The iBookGuy.
Thanks for this video, very informative. This is how to upgrade properly, using the proper tools equals easier job and quality work. There is a video on youtube on this same topic and he was cave manning the work due to not using the proper tools, using a knife and didn't even finish the video because he didn't have the proper size screwdriver.
The screenshots don't always come from the unit I'm showing in the video. In this case I just wanted people to see the dialog box in question, so I used a different computer. I'm surprised anyone noticed.
Guys, a metal putty knife works super to get it open. Difficulty w the Antenna becoming disconnected from the board, yet figured it out. I was working on the 1.83 Core 2 Duo. The mini only had 1 GB. I tried to put 2 PC6400 2 GB in, but it would not read them. What I ended up doing was using 1 of the .500 MB in Slot 2, and put a 1 GB PC5300 in slot 1, and now it is working with 2.5 GB, which really helps using TH-cam w Firefox 48.02, w Snow Leopard as the OS. The Mini Mac cost me $17 w $15 Shipping on Ebay. My next project to do is upgrade XP to 7 in Boot Camp. Pretty good for being a Windows Linux user, and having a Mac for only 1 month? PS the guy selling it to me said it only had 7 on it, yet it was XP, and if one presses the Boot Camp on the bottom right it went back to Leopard, then I upgraded to Snow Leopard with a nice DVD I bought.
An important update for you: I have a 2.0GHz model. It is important to consider the memory Ranking. 512MB RAM modules can be of Ranking 2XR16 or 2XR8. Using 1GB modules I could only make it to work with 2XR8, not 2XR16.
Looking at what I can upgrade on my ancient Mini. RAM is maxed out, but hopefully I can get some upgrades done, faster/larger HDD, maybe a new CPU if I can find one and the board supports faster examples, I'm unsure if it's the same board/bios for the faster models. But this is helps fill in a few pieces of the puzzle.
I hope you can read this comment. I also own a 2006 A1176 and it died suddenly one day. I've been googling and googling and finally found that it is an endemic problem of this 2006-07 model. Since you own the same model, I wonder if you have had to deal with this problem since you uploaded the video and if you sould solve it.
Hi, I already know how to do this, but it would be nice for others if you edited the description to also link to a similar video for the unibody mac minis that have slightly faster Intel chips and that screw on bottom lid. You know the ones where you can swap the superdrive for a second hard drive and where the PSU is inside the box.
I was just watching your video because I took out a stuck CD-ROM, and the little copper loop at the front came out and I had to figure out when it went again. So great video! Question is: I'd like to upgrade the main drive to 1TB so that I can streamline and consolidate my hard drive backups. But how do you make the new drive, the new boot drive? Do I need to install OS? Silly and simple, but that's where I am. Thanks!
Did you ever make a followup video for the later models, such as the unibody Core 2 Duo with the twist lock bottom or the even later models with DisplayPort connectors?
It would be much more helpful if you would expand on what you mean by "proper modifications". Maybe you would link to a descriptive article or tutorial.
Is it possible to upgrade the processor in the Intel Mac Mini Core Duo to a Intel Core 2 Duo with the same socket model? (Sorry about my english, i'm from Brazil)
These particular models did not have soldered in CPUs so it is possible. These have SocketM slots and the heatsink that cools them is connected by flimsy pins). The maximum cpu is a 2.0ghz core 2 duo (at least, that's what I've seen people successfully install).
Otávio Rodrigues Kozyrski Yeah sorry, I sort of assumed based what crApple is doing days, I mean their obsession with using weaker laptop grade chips soldering ANY and EVERY component.
Hi David, I noticed in the beginning of the video when you showed the window of "about this MAC", that your model uses DDR3 memory. But further in the video you advise DDR2 memory, and not DDR3. Does this depend on an exact model type or... ? Anyway, loved the video!!
Thanks for the video. I'm getting a Mac Mini 1.66 G and 300 HD, this week. It only has 512 of ram. Do you think TH-cam will run OK? or should I get the 2 gigs. And with 2 gigs do you think TH-cam will run OK. Love your videos, gonna sub now. Thanks. Gio.
I there!, first i'd like to say im a big fan of your work. Second i couldnt find on any forum what i m about to ask you so i was hoping if you could help. here`s the deal. I bought a mac mini 1.83 core duo, it has an intel t2400...its said that it can be upgraded with a t7400, (64 bit pro) i didnt find any of this procesor in here in argentina thus i found a intel t4500 it is a 32 bit processor but its a 2.3 ghz. i was hoping if you could tell me if this processor could work on my mac mini, an if it is worthy the change...thank you very much,
I tired the disassembly and I got as far as removing the ribbon cable, but the thin plastic clip that holds the ribbon cable became unglued and then I was not able to get it back on without using tape to old it in place. The second issue was with the 4 small screws. One of them was too tight and it got messed up trying to remove it. So I just put the Mac Mini back together and quit since I was not able to complete the upgrade. I would say that this computer is very annoying to work on and I don't recommend it to anyone that has no experience doing it.
8-Bit Guy, maybe, you are a person who might know. There are in Ukraine a lots of G4s and Mac Minis from EU avaliable, starting from 15$. But, they are all not equipped with PSU. Is it possible to modify the logic board for any kind of standart PSU, or get a usual one connected via connector modification ?
I've had mibevfor over ten year and it won't turn on now just started flashing screen will pop on n it goes eighv back off been safely put away for a bit so not sure why just wondered how I'd fix this problem and will all my memories still be on
miiss liissaa-Maarriiee Hughes assuming you never got it fixed, if you take the side panel off, you should be able to put it in another computer and have all your stuff and your OS
+lee Ritter It should match the speed it is designed to take, but the brand doesn't really matter. I used OWC brand in my Macbook and it worked like a charm. You can punch in your model in their website and it will spit back which RAM is best for your machine.
So the ribbon was holding on to the clamps or blue board. Those clamps on mine broke and is no longer getting sound. I dont know whAt this board is called to buy it. Please help thanks
Ok so you stated the Mac would utilize 4gb of ram as far using OS X. But if you were to install windows using bootcamp. Would windows 64 bit use the 4gb?
xnamkcor X I'd rather not chance it at all. And it's not only if you are moving it. If you have pets, if you don't have a sturdy desk (which you'd be surprised how many don't) but either way, there's a lot of things that can "bump" the Mac Mini while in use. It's pretty much idiotic to make sure the hard drive isn't properly mounted.
Disassembling using screwdrivers is NOT a good way. Original service manual says: "Modify the Putty Knife
1. If you don’t order a modified putty knife (922-6761) from Apple Service, purchase a putty knife with a 1.5-inch (38 mm), flexible metal blade. 2. Using sandpaper (150 grit), file down the end of the putty knife (on one side) until it’s slightly beveled. Rub the edge of the putty knife back and forth for about 2 minutes on the sandpaper. " I have used dining knife which is narrower (cca 18 mm) but much better than screwdriver.
And that also isn't a screenshot from a Mac mini. Read the top comment, David clarified that he doesn't always use screenshots from the exact systems shown in the video.
No, i tried to install wd black 7200rpm 500gb hard drive and it couldnt boot(just 5400rpm drives work). For memory, be sure to install 2rx16 type of ddr2, not 2rx8, because it wont work.
The Apple iBook G3 is much more limited in terms of upgradability. You can only install up to 512MB of RAM, and the hard disk is Parallel ATA, and if I remember correctly has an internal limit of around 255GB or so anyways. I'm not sure any IDE drives were made that exceed that limit, but if there were then they were certainly expensive.
AIO inc. Depends. So far as I can recall Mac Minis with Core Duos always came with socketed processors, and can accept a Core 2 Duo with the latest firmware from Apple, and with a hack you can even squeeze OS X Lion onto it.
In case you have one of the core2duo cpus, yes. But 2x1gb would still give you better performance imo. AND: why leave the other slot empty? If you still wanna go ahead and buy a 2gb ram you could at least leave the old one in the other slot (works fine..)
+Jan Vda the perfomance gains from 2 sticks is very very very small i had 1 4gb ddr2 stick and 2 2gb ones. the 2 gig ones got about 0.3 fps better on every game so... yeah
Dami Nooki there are no apple brand CPUs. You just need the right CPU for the right socket, and you're good. As I said before, you CAN change the CPU on the 2006/2007 minis, but not the 2009. Where did you get the idea of apple brand CPUs?
I still have, and use, a early 2006 Mac Mini 1.5 solo. I upgraded the ram, replaced the HDD with a SSD and upgraded the CPU to a Intel T7600 2.33GHz. It currently sits in my basement but I still use it whenever I need a computer. That little Mac is awesome.

While this is true, software is not an issue, and SATA 6GB is compatible with the slower speeds of SATA I and II.

Thank you Dave for this tutorial. I just bought a 1.66GHz Mac mini with screen keyboard and mouse for a completely indecent price of 90 euros
Thanks! I opened mine with a 3" wide metal paint scraper and a flat screwdriver. No damage.
Liked it. It worked. However I would recommend finding something non-metal to pry open the case, because it caused a lot of scratching for me. Try to find and use the dimples when prying it open. when he said "Not DDR3, not plain DDR." i was like "what about ddr4?" and then i realized this vid is from 2013.
Of course this would feature my favorite 8bit guy. Planning on working on one and this was helpful.

Now known as the "8-bit Guy"
I guess crApple had nothing for him so he just walked away into the past
No he just isn't selling or making videos on iBooks anymore, he still likes Apple products, he's just focusing on old 1980s computers now.
Thanks for this video, very informative. This is how to upgrade properly, using the proper tools equals easier job and quality work. Thanks for the video. I just needed to remove the drive for data recovery purposes.
What software does it take in case I want to upgrade the hard drive?
With the proper modifications you can do 4 GB on all of those models. It required an EFI Firmware hack.
It would be much more helpful if you would expand on what you mean by "proper modifications". Maybe you would link to a descriptive article or tutorial.
you replied to a two year old comment... well i'm a hypocrite
Only 3GB and only after EFI firmware 2,1 upgrade. Not a hack.
Thank you very much.
While only 3GB ram may be usable (C2D).. is it true that there is a performance benefit to going ahead and installing matching 2GB sticks?
By the way the maximum supported (or upgradeable) CPU is an Intel T7600. T7600G too (if you want to play around with overclocking). 😉🤔😆
Back when mac hardware upgrades were easy!
Is it possible to upgrade the processor in the Intel Mac Mini Core Duo to a Intel Core 2 Duo with the same socket model? (Sorry about my english, i'm from Brazil)
Otávio Rodrigues Kozyrski nopes. Those are laptop grade CPUs which are soldered right onto the logic board.
These particular models did not have soldered in CPUs so it is possible. These have SocketM slots and the heatsink that cools them is connected by flimsy pins). The maximum cpu is a 2.0ghz core 2 duo (at least, that's what I've seen people successfully install).
Here on youtube there are people who did this, it is not soldered onto the motherboard
melodyofailingheart The CPU is not soldered. Tks
Otávio Rodrigues Kozyrski
Yeah sorry, I sort of assumed based what crApple is doing days, I mean their obsession with using weaker laptop grade chips soldering ANY and EVERY component.
I personally would advise using a paint scraper to pop it open, less chance of marking the case that way.
In the next video can you review a iMac g4
Hi David, I noticed in the beginning of the video when you showed the window of "about this MAC", that your model uses DDR3 memory. But further in the video you advise DDR2 memory, and not DDR3. Does this depend on an exact model type or... ? Anyway, loved the video!!

have an early 2009 1.5 GHz solo - is it possible to put a 250 or 256gb SSD in this model, and if possible, which Crucial SSD?

Couple of questions. Does the ram have to "match" ie same speed and same manufacturer? How do you get all your info plus the OS onto a new HD? Thanks.
+lee Ritter It should match the speed it is designed to take, but the brand doesn't really matter. I used OWC brand in my Macbook and it worked like a charm. You can punch in your model in their website and it will spit back which RAM is best for your machine.
No, and you have to either clone it via a second system and image it onto another drive, or start over and reinstall Mac OS X.
Ok....the way apple made the wifi antenna pop off is cool..
So the ribbon was holding on to the clamps or blue board. Those clamps on mine broke and is no longer getting sound. I dont know whAt this board is called to buy it. Please help thanks

Hello Mr.whats that flex cable do mine actually got teared up??
Ok so you stated the Mac would utilize 4gb of ram as far using OS X. But if you were to install windows using bootcamp. Would windows 64 bit use the 4gb?
no way in hell you can use 64 bit on a 2006 mac mini
If the optical drive is also SATA, you may want to note that you can put an additional HDD in its place. Unless Apple does not allow that.
+xnamkcor X Since the Mac Mini uses laptop grade hardware, you'd probably have to get a disk drive to hard drive caddy kit.
Phillip Jernigan You only need a caddy if you're being fancy, otherwise you just need to maybe find a low power SATA cable.
xnamkcor X You need a caddy if you are using a hard drive and not a SSD.
Phillip Jernigan Only if you plan on moving it while it's on.
xnamkcor X I'd rather not chance it at all.
Do you have any thinkpads or anything like that? just wondering.
I am wondering about the refurbished iBooks and how refurbished are they
If it accepts SSDs then that will be very cool
EDIT: yay it does
Is it possible to use Sata III instead of Sata II? (i did my research and the internet says it only supports Sata II.)
K9MoDz Use *ONLY* Sata II
TailstheFox92 I haven't tried on these models, but most SATA III drives should work in SATA II or SATA I computers at the older speed.
Yes, you can, since SATA III drives are backwards compatible with SATA I and SATA II. But you won't be able to get a full SATA III speed.
Disassembling using screwdrivers is NOT a good way. Original service manual says:
"Modify the Putty Knife
1. If you don’t order a modified putty knife (922-6761) from Apple Service, purchase a
putty knife with a 1.5-inch (38 mm), flexible metal blade.
2. Using sandpaper (150 grit), file down the end of the putty knife (on one side) until it’s
slightly beveled. Rub the edge of the putty knife back and forth for about 2 minutes on
the sandpaper. "
I have used dining knife which is narrower (cca 18 mm) but much better than screwdriver.
At 0:21 the recording shows a 2.4 GHz core-2-Duo which isn't on the specified list and it has 8 gigs of ram, then you say the maximum is 2 gigs.
And that also isn't a screenshot from a Mac mini. Read the top comment, David clarified that he doesn't always use screenshots from the exact systems shown in the video.
I wish I lived in Ft. Worth :P :P
No, i tried to install wd black 7200rpm 500gb hard drive and it couldnt boot(just 5400rpm drives work).
For memory, be sure to install 2rx16 type of ddr2, not 2rx8, because it wont work.
Actually on the latest os i have a 2009 core 2 duo and it can handle up to 8gb of ram (2x4gb)
The 2009 isnt a a1176
So the max ram is 3gb or 4 GB for the 2.0 GHz model??
3gb
+Omar Khalil when he show the about his Mac it said 8gb ram there
+CineRaphael he had a 2.4ghz processor
How do I replace my broken hard drive with a new SSD and now it says no bootable devices to replace it?
can I install my xbox 360 harddrive on the mac mini? It looks the same.
yes
thanks it`s was great
I have never seen a smart apple user.
an you do one of these for the ibook g3 clamshell??
The Apple iBook G3 is much more limited in terms of upgradability. You can only install up to 512MB of RAM, and the hard disk is Parallel ATA, and if I remember correctly has an internal limit of around 255GB or so anyways. I'm not sure any IDE drives were made that exceed that limit, but if there were then they were certainly expensive.
Can yoy make a video on how to build a hackintosh
Hi
No.
You can actually get a Core 2 Duo into your Core Duo machine.
Only in some cases. Some models don't have socketed processors, and even then the few that do tend not to support having their processor changed.
AIO inc. Depends. So far as I can recall Mac Minis with Core Duos always came with socketed processors, and can accept a Core 2 Duo with the latest firmware from Apple, and with a hack you can even squeeze OS X Lion onto it.
I never knew Mac Mini's use notebook HDDs.
Why does Apple have to make everything so damn difficult!?!?
I think you can stick in 8gb ram in the C2D machines
64bit EFI MacMini does support 8gb ram in it. for example macmini mid 2009 or later model.
i accidentally disconnected the airport card where do i plug this back in?
You forgot to tell people to ground themselves before they opened it up and touch stuff
My 2007 Mac mini shows 4GB when I added 2x2GB modules !!
You will only see 3 GB in Activity Monitor. That is the amount usable to OS and applications, while 4 GB is the amount physically installed.
No chance in Upgrading the CPU ??
Does anyone know where I can get restore disks for ma206ll/a and what's the highest operating system I can run on it
10.6 Snow Leopard
Mine only is up to 10.4 and it says it's up to date. Hmm gotta find restore disks
a dim and a so-dim right?
Can I just put a 2gb ram stick in just one of the slots and leave the other one empty?
In case you have one of the core2duo cpus, yes. But 2x1gb would still give you better performance imo.
AND: why leave the other slot empty? If you still wanna go ahead and buy a 2gb ram you could at least leave the old one in the other slot (works fine..)
+Jan Vda the perfomance gains from 2 sticks is very very very small i had 1 4gb ddr2 stick and 2 2gb ones. the 2 gig ones got about 0.3 fps better on every game so... yeah
imagine 3 gb of ram
-16 gb team
I wanted to say that you sound like the 8 bit guy xd
DΞRPEYYY Because he IS the 8 bit guy
I want to downgrade to Tiger. I have leopard running on it and its very slow
How to repair mac mini no signal

is it possible to put 4gb ram in one slot?
No
can I use a 500 GB Seagate hard drive?
Alley55 he said any capacity works. there is no size limitation and you can even use an SSD.
Alley55 Is it Sata II or III?
I searched for comments like "Do i have to reinstall os x?
Yes,you should if you "upgraded" the hard drive
Airport antenna?
Azim Alif if it is a newer model, it could be somewhere else
What if you ripped the cables out at 2:45
Well for anyone who wants to know ... the fan just runs at max speed al the time.
I think small flathead screw driver should be used first to pry the connector up before using the pliers to grab it. I have the same issue as you.
Valeu!
Who watches these videos for no reason.
You have the pink bunny intro.
Can l replase CPU?
Not on a Mac Mini.
They're wrong. You can on this model, but on the other ones, you can't.
Dami Nooki there are no apple brand CPUs. You just need the right CPU for the right socket, and you're good. As I said before, you CAN change the CPU on the 2006/2007 minis, but not the 2009. Where did you get the idea of apple brand CPUs?
I see...
Lol on the part where he took the top off he reused footage from the G4 video because you can see the full size ram module! funny
