How to Crochet Mermail Tail (6-12 months)

Crochet Mermaid Tail (6-12 months)
Medium Weight size 4 yarn
Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver Stripes (2 skeins)
Hook: 5.00mm
Measurements: 18” long(without fin), 22” long (with fin), 20” waist circumference
Shell stitch : 3 dc, chain 1, 3 dc
V stitch : 1 dc, chain 1, 1 dc

Make chain 2
Round 1: 12 dc into the loose knot, slip sts
Round 2: chain 2, 2 dc into every sts. Slip sts. (24 sts)
Round 3: chain 2, *2 dc, 2 dc into next sts*. Repeat 8x. Slip sts. (32 sts)
Round 4: chain 2, *3 dc, 2 dc into next sts*. Repeat 8x. Slip sts. (40 sts)
Round 5: chain 2, *4 dc, 2 dc into next sts*. Repeat 8x. Slip sts. (48 sts)
Round 6: chain 1, skip 3 sts, *shell sts, skip 2 sts, 1 sc, skip 2 sts*. make total of 8 shell sts. Slip sts last Shell to chain 1
Round 7: chain 4, 1 dc in same sts as chain 4, *chain 5, V sts in to sc from previous row*. Repeat till end. Once you make the last V sts, chain 5 and slip sts into 3rd chain from chain 4 in earlier round.
Round 8: chain 1, shell its into V sts, 1 sc into chain 1 from round 6. Repeat till end of the round. Slip sts over chain 1 from round 6 and into chain 1 from round 8. (See video if not clear)
Repeat round 7 & 8 until u reach about 17 inches in length or 26 rows.
Row 27: Chain 3 ( count as dc), 2 hdc, 3 sc, 2 hdc. Repeat pattern for every shell (see video if not clear). Slip sts
Row 28: Chain 1, 1 hdc into every its (63 its). Slip its

Row 2 : chain 1, 28 hdc.
Row 3: chain 1, 26 hdc.
Row 4: chain 1, 26 hdc.
Row 5: chain 1, 24 hdc.
Row 6: chain 1, 24 hdc.
Row 7: chain 1, 22 hdc.
Row 8: chain 1, 22 hdc.
Row 9: chain 1, 20 hdc.
Row 10: chain 1, 20 hdc.
Row 11: chain 1, 18 hdc.
Row 12: chain 1, 18 hdc.
Row 13: chain 1, 16 hdc.
Row 14: chain 1, 16 hdc.
Row 15: chain 1, 14 hdc.
Row 16: chain 1, 14 hdc.
Row 17: chain 1, 12 hdc.
Row 18: chain 1, 12 hdc.
Row 19: chain 1, 10 hdc.
** Make 2 piece and sew/crochet both piece together. Sew it to the tail.

Good tutorial. Thank you. The one thing I would mention is to make sure your fins are centered before you sew them on. I didn’t figure that out until I had sewn them on the 1st time. It wasn’t a big deal, just a little extra work.

To increase width, I just simply just continued with the beginning rounds of increases. On the shells, I did treble crochet instead of double crochet and increased the chain 5 to chain 7.
Doing trebles changes the first row of spaces between the shells from skip 2 spaces to skip 3 spaces between the shells. I hope this isn't confusing.
Crazy About Crochet what age did you make yours for? When you said keep increasing, you mean like *5 dc, then 2 in ea*, then 6 and so on? How many times did you do this? And the amount of shells stay the same, just tr and ch 7? That’s all that you changed? Did you have to change the tail?

Yeah, changed it to 7mm as well but still small. I am not sure though if she is using chunky weight yarn. I end up doing double crochet all the way with 5.5 mm instead

May I know if you have a gauge for this? I tried this but seems like my work is small. I am using a 5mm hook. Not sure though if my yarn has same thickness as redheart.
Me too I just did up to row 9 an it pretty small I think I'm going to tey with 7mm hook.
i also changed my hook to 7mm but the circumference is 16inches only. 16 inches I think will fit 3-6 months. I am making costume for 8 months. I end up making it double crochet all the way instead of block shell stitch

I cant figure out this pattern, i got as far as to the first row of shells and I keep getting 9 shells instead of 8. anybody know what im doing wrong???
This actually came out to 16 inches around for me. How would I increase to make it 20 inches?
which round are you at now? if you not at the shell round yet, you could add 1 more round of increase round. If you at the shell round already, probably you could just change to bigger crochet hook
