I started playing PoE on 3.06. The League Bane came out. So when I started, all I saw was "Hey isnt this Bane skill awesome?" and I thought "Yes, it is pretty awesome!" So my first ever character was a chaos caster, and after that almost every league starter was a chaos dot caster. I love the archetype! And I have given up on it now after trying poison srs two leagues ago. Got infuriating how easy it was to deal triple the damage and more.
6-7 mil dps is insane, idk how is that bad. You only need 5 mil for a dot build to feel good. The rest is defences. Only thing that sucks is that you gotta do these weird techs to cheat out the damage. The elephant in the room is dragonfang which is close in value to a 50 div investment for 20-100c ( depending when you bought it ).
@@trashcaster Yeah... I just noticed he has 4l soulrend for some reason. Regardless, you can make soulrend have 6 mil by itself in another configuration lol. There are dudes rn on poe ninja with 6 mil soulrend and half mil bane, the only skills they use.
tried league starting ED/C this league and felt the pain of using an older skill, quickly switched to hexblast mines to finish out the campaign and swap to Death's Oath

Cool tech! I was an ED/contagion enjoyer back in the day, so I'm sad to see it in such a bad state these days... Recently, I've been scratching that itch with ignite wave of conviction. WoC feels so smooth to gear since it has so many ways to shred enemy resists, and the clear is super satisfying between WoC+Ignite Prolif and Obliteration+Shaper of Flames (bonus points for celestial mtx). Every season I get to t16s with this build and it's dirt cheap to put together (not gonna say a price or chat will come after me). I would love to see a Subtractem gigajuiced version of WoC someday :)
I'm an Essence Drain andy, and there's nothing I miss more than blasting league starts with spellslinger and then transistioning into a tanky-ass Trickster god on Hardcore. I pray that these days will come back eventually.
how i played was using 6L Bane on Bow, and sharing dual 5L on chest for ED and Blight, the catch is the build doesnt feel good without good cast speed, as you are constantly busy casting stuffs, and blight needs alot alot of cast speed for ramping up max stacks.
I totally agree, my first shaper skill was with a bane trickster back in the day, so that skill has a special place in my heart, and for that reason I loved your bane occultist guide as well. Anyway, I hope ggg does something about it.
Have you played around with Soulrend Poison Low Tolerance at all? I've seen a few people say it's really good and synergizes really well with all the chaos damage and DoT scaling.

Is while these guys are GREAT builders, its the "Community" in this instance "Nictator"? lol These guys or gals in the community that give their time to so freely to the rest of us that bring such brilliant problem solving to the table. Loving your favorite content creator, is loving the team of folks that surround them on the channel. !!
Several few leagues back Karv did an ED champion that was rank 1 in HC delve for quite some time. So likely it was better (but more expensive) than this version. That was long after Chaos DoT were in the meta, so maybe whatever he did back there could still work.
Coming from the HCSSF POV. The two button chaos dmg style of ED/contagion was replaced with ggg's reckless buff of impending doom. And I'm not talking vixen's. Standard double cast out does ED/Con AND it charges plague bearer. Bane now leaves rare behinds because they have so much more life. Death's oath is still good but only for clearing. Idk bout soulrend
Death oath deals at most 250k(generally around 50k) not even half a million all the clear comes from profane bloom NOT death oath. Death oath only starts the chain by killing the white mobs(it is painful even to kill magic ones without profane bloom)
im currently playing impending doom because i rushed to find a league start. like 20 to 30d into the build farming harvest. don't know if its truly considered chaos dot but its ok. most of my divs that went into the build were for damage but I'm also playing a very defensive build. its also probably the last league impending doom will exist.
Seems expensive to get started, at least for me anyway. If feel something could be done with projectile damage and caustic arrow and maybe cast on crit or something
I've been researching at work how to make my soul rend build output more dps and nothing short of sacrificing all defenses gets me to ok dps. But I've definitely played a ton of builds that have better defenses and offense

I see how desperately everyone is trying to make shitty builds to be good But sink nearly a mirror into the build to compete with 50div EA Ele/champs (I dont mean your build) Im making my own builds too, im not as good as you are, but i miss inspirations, new mechanics and content of new meta builds. So its good to see that you always work on strange builds haha, kinda fun to watch and as said, its a good inspiration
I love soulrend. Back in scourge I cleared all content with it using a shadowstitch +4 then I think I eventually swapped to a +4 shavs. At the time it was very good. But this was pre arch nem.
I'm only 8:38 into the video, and forgive me if there's something I'm missing, but why go through the whole gem swapping setup with Soulrend. Why not just use pinpoint support? The skill has multi proj, and goes down to 1 proj but 80% more damage (with the +1 maximum intensity mastery) when you start damaging a boss. Sure you need to use a skill like lightning warp to stay stationnary and keep the 4 intensity stacks but it seems like it's worth it. I tried soulrend pinpoint in a delve 1 week event and it was pretty good.
I liked doing a quality stacking hit based essence drain. Its a meme but 500% hit damage was fun in build around. Soulrend has the same alt quality i think.
Ive tried to build a Decay build with forbidden Shako, but even with mirror tier items I can't pass 3 mil dps whatever I try. That is with 600% Increased Duration Stormburst and lvl 35 Decay on Forbidden Shako.
I'm playing a self-cast forbidden rite poison pathfinder and I absolutely love it. I run the mahuxotl shield and convert all damage taken to fire and chaos, then run fourth vow so armour applies to chaos hits. FR does like 15 damage to me per cast. Currently doing ~25mil shaper dps and clearing ubers :D.
I'm level 75 after using your bane occultist pob from 3.2. I must have misread and thought it was for the current league. I really liked levelling with it so far. Everything was ez.
@Subtractem - I got quad Curse on Hit and 1 to all gems 5 implicit Templars. Would this be good for any curse related build? I can pass it over to you ingame if you wanna experiment :)
Those gloves are always fun, just hard to make more than 2-3 curses ever really matter, especially with the nerf to curse on hit effect. I can take a look though if you show me on stream.

Apparently you can lower max curse limit with the -1 curses ring and with 1% life&mana per curse, you'll gain 4%life&mana for 4x cursing uncursed enemies on each hit. Like instant megaleech on steroids. TIL.
I basically league start Deaths Oath Caustic Arrow Occultist evey league. It can get up to 5mil dps w/ medium investment. I would recommend that for people that want to do chaos dot. Farm up for a second character for Ubers/Maven/Uber Elder.

CA is not a spell it is an attack. This video is specifically about chaos SPELLS. Basically everything around chaos has been nerfed because of poison and spells have been hit the hardest since they were barely hang-in on. For example you can even scale CA with the covenant and make a ballista CA build or scale other ways but there is no way to scale the spells. Like soulrend can go poison because it hits very hard but it is the only one. If you wanna use bane as your main skill for example you will barely have any damage. For example MBTX made a essence drain char a couple leagues ago(before the nerfs) and he was talking that 1M dps in a league statyer 2M dps with like 20DIV 5M dps 100DIV if you want 10M dps you are looking to expend at least a mirror...
I feel like I've said this a hundred times, but... the problem with soulrend is the original nerf (3.7) when they cut the radius (13-10). Due to the smaller radius (which means much smaller AOE) it will often miss enemies which just feels terrible. Everything they've done to buff it since (duration in 3.9, damage in 3.15, effectiveness in 3.17, damage+effectiveness in 3.19) hasn't made it good. It needs the radius reverted!
It is more like power creep everything deals like 5M dps even with low investment nowadays look at caustic arrow for example I have nothing but +3 deterministic bow and I have 6M dps
Essence Drain damage should ramp up based on the duration, this would not affect AoE but it would allow you to scale skill duration for damage for single target.
Chaos dots need some additional mutlipliers or a decent base damage buff. The endgame dmg output with awakened gems is like ignite/poison with medium budget.
I build this every league and it keeps getting worse and worse... If you don't have a million point into increased aoe and cast speed it feels so janky...
Sad... ED + Contagion is my most played build. My first was the old poison ED with Consuming Dark, pre 3.0. It was really fun. Today i dont know why Soulrend exist. The base dmg is not much higher than Essence Drain. Essence Drain have much more duration and the underrated regen keeps your life always full. The only reason to use Soulrend is to poison, but we have better spells to do that.
Chaos DoT Occultist was sooo good in Sentinel, could craft my own +5 Staff and 5-link gloves were easy to get also. Man I miss recombinators so much :(
The problem with chaos damage in general is chaos resist, they added alot of mods that increase monster chaos resist in maps but no way to counteract it and stil do damage. When a fucker got 80 chaosres in maps cuz altars/archnemesis/simulacrum/map/delve mods, there is nothing you can do with chaos damage at best you can lower like 30-40% chaos resist and stil do half damage. HALF DAMAGE? but wait its always paired with wither resistance so actually you lose like 60-70% dps in the BEST CASE SCENARIO. Elemental can just penetrate/lower 3-4 times more resistance and not have wither resistance on top.
I think when it comes to soulrend reducing proj speed would really improve the single target. But since there's little sources of reduced proj speed it's pretty hard.
@@Jameshowardadventures because it refresh the dot of soulrend. As long as it's near or the soulrend is on top of the target. Because 0.6 sec duration on it's dot is pretty short for a dot skill. Hence why in this vid he invests in duration a bit.

I really think I would just continue to use a +5 staff. The damage without that is just not there. With it I think I could still hit 17-18mil combined dps which is bane/ED/Soulrend all together. Defenses aren't the greatest but I have hit 100 with it. The annoying part is of course crafting a +5 staff which can get expensive, and my version used a double implicit skin of the loyal which went from 5div to 30+div. So now the build would want a 35div staff, 30div amulet and now a 30div chest...for that price you can make something that is much more fun and probably better for a lot of content unfortunately.
Its was a good time to play ED contagion when it was delirium league- best league to date for me. i feel lately league mechanics just do not offer much in the way for clear speed builds Chaos dot builds just cant kill bosses as well as other builds out there ment for pure bossing Chaos dot a good starter build and can do fast mapping with minimal investment but do not find much in the way for HYPER scaling unlike bow builds
I never had a character with such a high investment, and it really saddens me that it "just" deals 7M. after all that, when top tier skills are reaching Billions by now...
So I'm playing your old Bane ED Blight Setup from 3.20...using mostly your pob as base spent around 30-35div in it(till need to improve alot of itens for better survivabillity) i got like 3.2m dot dmg with ED Blight/VaalBlight bane 11stacks of wither, and boss on low life(punishment) Normal t16 Rare maps corrupt with scarabs run, i kill everything with bane only(essences fully juiced/corrupted i use ED or vaal blight) After getting the Cane of Unravelling for 5c and a 6link for 20c(first week) i could fly trough yellow maps without any problem at all Already killed all non uber bosses with it without much trouble if u know the mechanics... My char in Poe Ninja can be found as BlackPercher if anyone wanna look at it(my dmg theres showa extremelly low idk why) i guess i can get atleat more 1m dmg changing the gloves for a Soulrend Setup but didnt do it yet
Absolutely could, I'm currently relying on having a shield for quite a bit of defense and it's not _that_ much more damage that it would be worth doing the swap.
The long cast times on ED and Soulrend really make the skills extra bad. You can't even effectively scale poison or hits on Soulrend because the cast time is so low.
Blight doesn't hit, you need to curse for Profane Bloom to work so you either have to manually curse or use Blasphemy...both of which have their own downsides.
Tbh all dot builds outside of poison cannot reach reasonable damage. Try scaling exsanguinate or reap as they were intended (phys dot). They need to add more to the tree or just buff the base damage of a lot of these skills dots, they are just being used as conversion skills.
@subtractem this is just a response to everyone saying soulrend is a bad skill. Yes, the chaos dot portion can be better, but overall it is still a decent skill for clear.

poison is damage over time that happens to be chaos damage yes, but im specifically talking about the category of non-poison "chaos dot spells" here that have an inherent damage over time component. this is similar cold dot skills that do damage over time without inflicting an ailment.

For three or four leagues I really tried to make a Soulrend trapper just because of the MTX so I could play a character named Schrodinger's Cast.
essence drain contagion was one of my most favourite build despite not even getting anywere in red maps compared to where i get to today

I recommend checking out the Tech that TrollErgoSum uses.
tl;dr Curse recovery mastery + 0 curse limit = big recovery, scaling with each curse.

I find CA Occy can run Maven and Uber Elder just fine :)

IMO ED should just stack. Maybe give it a max stack, if it would be to strong. ED totems inc!
You still need to scale duration, because you play soulrend and other chaos skills of choice. That's exactly more damage rn from duration.

Today i dont know why Soulrend exist. The base dmg is not much higher than Essence Drain. Essence Drain have much more duration and the underrated regen keeps your life always full.
The only reason to use Soulrend is to poison, but we have better spells to do that.
Chaos DoT Occultist was sooo good in Sentinel, could craft my own +5 Staff and 5-link gloves were easy to get also. Man I miss recombinators so much :(

The problem with chaos damage in general is chaos resist, they added alot of mods that increase monster chaos resist in maps but no way to counteract it and stil do damage. When a fucker got 80 chaosres in maps cuz altars/archnemesis/simulacrum/map/delve mods, there is nothing you can do with chaos damage at best you can lower like 30-40% chaos resist and stil do half damage. HALF DAMAGE? but wait its always paired with wither resistance so actually you lose like 60-70% dps in the BEST CASE SCENARIO.
Elemental can just penetrate/lower 3-4 times more resistance and not have wither resistance on top.
Bane in an asenath's mark allowed me to level a CA pathfinder in well under 3 hours. ( Havoc twink leveling build) 10/10 leveling

I think when it comes to soulrend reducing proj speed would really improve the single target. But since there's little sources of reduced proj speed it's pretty hard.
why do you want reduced proj?
@@Jameshowardadventures because it refresh the dot of soulrend. As long as it's near or the soulrend is on top of the target. Because 0.6 sec duration on it's dot is pretty short for a dot skill. Hence why in this vid he invests in duration a bit.

I'm building a CA Occultist (without Death's Oath) currently level 91 and the clear is so nice. Single target is decent with Vaal CA.
Yeah attacks can supplement it nicely. This is only about the spells.
CA seems in a decent spot atm actually. Sadly the Dragonfang for it has risen a lot too
I really think I would just continue to use a +5 staff. The damage without that is just not there. With it I think I could still hit 17-18mil combined dps which is bane/ED/Soulrend all together. Defenses aren't the greatest but I have hit 100 with it. The annoying part is of course crafting a +5 staff which can get expensive, and my version used a double implicit skin of the loyal which went from 5div to 30+div. So now the build would want a 35div staff, 30div amulet and now a 30div chest...for that price you can make something that is much more fun and probably better for a lot of content unfortunately.
Its was a good time to play ED contagion when it was delirium league- best league to date for me.
i feel lately league mechanics just do not offer much in the way for clear speed builds
Chaos dot builds just cant kill bosses as well as other builds out there ment for pure bossing
Chaos dot a good starter build and can do fast mapping with minimal investment but do not find much in the way for HYPER scaling unlike bow builds
Obsolete skill with cool MTX reminds me of certain Shaper's Beam...
Since Ed got nerfed, chaos skills are very hard to make work on NC. It is my fav archetype. Sad days

Soulrend needs some Proj Speed to make clear even better.
I never had a character with such a high investment, and it really saddens me that it "just" deals 7M. after all that, when top tier skills are reaching Billions by now...

So I'm playing your old Bane ED Blight Setup from 3.20...using mostly your pob as base spent around 30-35div in it(till need to improve alot of itens for better survivabillity)
i got like 3.2m dot dmg with ED Blight/VaalBlight bane 11stacks of wither, and boss on low life(punishment)
Normal t16 Rare maps corrupt with scarabs run, i kill everything with bane only(essences fully juiced/corrupted i use ED or vaal blight)
After getting the Cane of Unravelling for 5c and a 6link for 20c(first week) i could fly trough yellow maps without any problem at all
Already killed all non uber bosses with it without much trouble if u know the mechanics...

i guess i can get atleat more 1m dmg changing the gloves for a Soulrend Setup but didnt do it yet

Absolutely could, I'm currently relying on having a shield for quite a bit of defense and it's not _that_ much more damage that it would be worth doing the swap.
The long cast times on ED and Soulrend really make the skills extra bad. You can't even effectively scale poison or hits on Soulrend because the cast time is so low.
I think to QOL, just go pure Blight with Profane Bloom, profane takes care of clear, blight takes care of single target.
Blight doesn't hit, you need to curse for Profane Bloom to work so you either have to manually curse or use Blasphemy...both of which have their own downsides.

Tbh all dot builds outside of poison cannot reach reasonable damage. Try scaling exsanguinate or reap as they were intended (phys dot). They need to add more to the tree or just buff the base damage of a lot of these skills dots, they are just being used as conversion skills.
If they are being used as conversion skills they can't buff the base damage. Unfortunately chaos skills can't even be used that way ;/

Cwdt soulrend was so good last league, sadly without crucible you loose half the dps :/
Occultist Wardloop cwdt soulrend + forbidden rite + hexblast gets past 200m dps with ashes (quality gives more damage per hit to phantasmal soulrend)
That has nothing to do with chaos dot.
@subtractem this is just a response to everyone saying soulrend is a bad skill. Yes, the chaos dot portion can be better, but overall it is still a decent skill for clear.

Toxic Rain is still very viable, but dps does cap out at around 4-5 million if I remember correctly. Uber can be sort of painful to do.
Toxic rain is an attack not a spell the video is specifically about chaos dot spells.
GGG nerfed almost all the fun skills. Now you can place ballistas and run circles, basically semi afk while inflicting 36 million dot dps....

poison is damage over time that happens to be chaos damage yes, but im specifically talking about the category of non-poison "chaos dot spells" here that have an inherent damage over time component. this is similar cold dot skills that do damage over time without inflicting an ailment.

Hexblast is a chaos skill. And the 2nd or 3rd skill most used 🤔 Impending doom, toxic rain, scourge arrow, etc.

Toxic rain is probably the only chaos damage over time skill that’s usable at low investment
Toxic Rain and Caustic arrow are not spells. They are attacks because of that they still work since you can get more damage in other places
