He sang the words and played the guitar but Gordon did it with emotion and depth of feeling really, he really felt the song. I doubt Gordon’s version will ever be bettered. RIP GL.

Glen Campbell's studio version is better than this one, as this is a little rushed. I agree though that Lightfoot's is the one.

I really appreciated the talent that Glen was, but if you want to really hear this song done as it was intended, find Gord LIghtfoot's version.... And if you want a real treat, find Johnny Cash's version of it... It was one of his last recordings, and was released posthumously... it's a treat, but no one does this like Gord Lightfoot.

He was smart to start off by lowering his tenor voice because the song call for about a 1/2 octave jump and to stay there with no break for breathing .
If he started at his normal voice , he'd jump so high it might be annoying plus he can't break for air so if he doesn't breathe at the right spot he risks running out of air .

I never knew he did this song. Maybe he sped up the tempo so that he wouldn't be accused of theft. He performed "Gentle On My Mind" at the correct temp, and people thought that it was his song. Hell, even John Hartford said so. Glen was too nice and always gave John credit, and joined him for many great versions of that song.
Which song is better? Gordon's version, definitely. His voice reaches down to your soul. This would be a second, but I haven't heard Johny Cash's version. Merci to the comments section.

I really wish he had played this much more slowly. He had the talent and voice to do a great version of this song. While this version is nice, it is just too fast to catch all the subtle, and not-so-subtle, emotions found in this gem of a song. I almost feel like the producers made him speed it up for TV purposes.
