    I think a white or neutral border in between the hexipuff flowers would be very nice, to tone down the intense colours like you mentioned.
    And very nice to see another stash busting episode! I always find it very interesting and entertaining to see what you are working on.

  • @RoxanneRichardson

    Lol, I was going to suggest you block what you had on the needles to see how things change, when I heard you say my name. Blocked gauge is always what is meant in a pattern, because you can't count on different knitters having both the same pre-block and post-block gauges. That's why you measure your gauge swatch before and after you block it, so that you can see what the discrepancy is between pre- and post-blocking.
    Those "squares" that those old patterns talk about can be really ambiguous. When they say to knit something square, often what they mean is that however many sts you're working with, that's how many rows you should work. The resulting fabric isn't square shaped! Also, when they talk about the "width" matching the length, the width is sometimes the width, but sometimes the circumference. Often, they'll include an example so you can understand what that particular pattern means by "square."
    Loved seeing everything you've been working on. 🙂

    • @RetroClaude
      @RetroClaude ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for this! I never knew that about gauge. I'm a pretty standard knitter so I rarely end up with a swatch that doesn't match the gauge. Now I know if I don't I can try blocking it to see if it will grow!

    I got so excited when you started talking about knitting knee supports and ballerinas!!! This past winter, I had a knee injury after performing in the nutcracker, and I used leftover wool from knitting christmas balls as gifts to make a "knee warmer" to wear under my legwarmers and add extra protection to my injured knee. You really do feel less pain! I believe it was Paton's wool worsted. A little itchy over nylon dance tights, but oh boy was it helpful.

  • @rosequill7925
    @rosequill7925 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Maybe the Victorian knee caps if they were meant to be thinner when knitted with whatever the "appropriate" yarn was would offer some amount of compression that could also be helpful for pain

    Honestly one of your best episodes, ever!! And they're all fantastic!! I don't know how you fit so much into one 25 minute segment! All the show-and-tell, the history, what you've learned through your experiments, WIPS, etc. I can't wait to see what happens to your Maywick sweater! Will it block out to the correct size?? Or will you have to work some magic??! But my favorite part was when you pulled out your hexies and explained you'd be making a grandmother's flower garden quilt with them! Genius! I love love love grandmother's flower garden quilts. The possibilities for the background are endless....white or green are the most common, but I've seen them done with light blue, gray, yellow, pink, etc.! Now I have to dig out that crocheted flower garden pattern I bought a hundred years ago.. Thanks for the fun update!!!

      Yes please. Looking at what Poiret, Fortuny, Chanel and Vionnet subsequently came up with, this experimental period would be great. I could do my own research but - at 61 I have a yarn stash almost the size of yours, plus an equivalent in fabric, professional art supplies to dwarf them, along with reference books, patterns - you get the picture. Hard as we try we can't look at Everything. We can turn to knowledgeable folks like yourself on specific topics.
      For the past 3 years I've been deliberately using up all of my stashed stuff. My wardrobe is developing nicely. My stash piles have only decreased slightly in volume. Use 4 add 7 seems to be a common formula for our magic fairy assistants. Lol

    I had no idea the victorian knee pads were a thing, but as an ex ballet dancer with bad knees who is also a human icicle, they make a lot of sense 😂
    Not just for warmth, but also because for a lot of women their bad knees would be from scrubbing floors and similar, and having the extra padding would help cushion the patella when kneeling (which always tends to push mine wonky)

    In the 1950s i remember my great aunt made herself little knee warmers that were generaly in pink to wear indoors with directoire knickers that finished just above and worn over lisle stockings ,with garters not suspenders . I doubt she ever wore them out as she was very stylish in her youth and did not give up despite creaks and pains when older. Hers were much smaller than yours and just covered the knee cap

I moved to Sweden in 2017 and where I am isn't much colder than the UK in terms of actual temperatures...but the wind chill is brutal on my bad knee. I wish I'd known about Victorian knee caps when I made my attempt, I might have had something wearable now instead of a super bulky tube that it buried somewhere to hide my shame!

    Great video! For colour work, I often find that I have to add some stitches or use another needle size for the sleeves because they are too tight. If they are still tight after blocking, I would suggest to add length and some stitches to fit your arms better. And I have to add length constantly ( I guess I am a long person! 😂) so don't worry about that! 😊

    I just finished March.. but when knitting in the round you can use a smaller needle on the left (when the stitch you just worked is going on the right side) that way you only need one extra needletipset.. if you are knitting on a 3mm needle you can use a 2,75mm or a 2.5 mm for the feeding needle.

    Love your stashbusting videos! As always, your knowledge and thoroughness make them interesting as well as vicariously satisfying (which is; i guess, why people watch stashbusting videos in the first place, even if things don't always go according to plan)! But then again, all your videos are just the kind of infodump that make my heart sing - thanks! Knitted kneecaps... Well, I'm intrigued. I don't know if my sensory processing issues would allow me to wear them, but as someone who doesn't have the strongest joints either, knee support is always appreciated!

    My body is not a size that allows for single size vintage pattern knitting (without quite a lot of modification), but I definitely remember the challenge of wading through a pattern that has several sizes for the first time, once I started knitting things that had sizes (Eg not cozies and scarves and such). It *does* get easier and if it helps, you can always make a copy and black out the parts of the pattern that don't apply to your size.

    Hooray, knitting! If you need it, I have Lara Neel's Sock Architecture which has generalised instructions for the common heel, shaped common heel, and modified shaped common heel (along with about a dozen others). Given the work you were doing for the ball, you've done really well, go you!
    I'm zooming along on my upsized sock pattern. I made a me-sized, me-shaped toe-up sock pattern years ago, back when toe-up flap and gusset patterns didn't really exist. Been using it since then, but wanted some thicker socks for dog walking in wellies, so I converted to Regia 6-ply (which fit beautifully), and this last couple of months I've converted it to Regia 8-ply and I'm testing it out. Holy crap, 8-ply goes so much quicker than 4-ply! I'm just starting the first leg round now, a week after I cast on. That would usually take me 2-3 times longer, especially with all the lifelines I installed in case of fit problems. It fits (so far 🤞) and it's pretty and I'm super happy 🤩
    Next up, a dive into heel turns and their shaping, so I can tweak my fit 🧶🧮📝🧦

    Excited to see the knits you've been working on over the spring. I had never heard of knee caps before and I am in love with the idea! I get lots of join pain during thunderstorms and such due to my chronic illnesses and I know that warmth helps. This video inspired me, so I found a free (modern) pattern for a knee cap on ravelry that I've started working on. About halfway through the first one now and very excited to see how well it works. I'm using some stash sock yarn and funnily enough the kneecap pattern I'm using was written up by someone who based it on a Victorian German knee cap pattern. So far so good. Lots of German Short Rows. haha.

    Love those knee caps! I had a pair of knee warmers when I was a teen and they are excellent for horse riding. Having bent knees in the saddle, they are quite exposed to wind and weather, so I wonder if those vintage knee caps might have helped rheumatic people to continue riding for longer? I have wanted for a long time to make another pair of knee warmers to wear out to the horses. I dont ride much now due to illness and injury but I still find my knees are one area not quite covered by tall boots and a long jacket. I will search for knee caps and see what I find!
    Also I really liked the shrunken top, it looked v cuwte! Reminds me of some of the kids jumpers my friend and I used to get from op shops as teens and wear around showing our midriffs 😅 we thought we were kool so that's the main thing 😁

    🤔 I was taught in colour theory that pink, red, orange, yellow, brown are warm colours, and green, blue, purple, black are cool colours.
    Also interested to know whether the blocking helped the slight twist in the Maywick jumper. I noticed that knitting in the round also made a slight twist but since I am making knitted foods for my nephew's present I didn't block them. So I just have a slightly twisty carrot and cucumber 🤷‍♀

      Results of the blocking next month!
      As for the colours it depends on the shade of red and pink. A very 'blue' toned red is cooler than an orangey red. Basically the shades of red and pink I chose just didn't go with the yellowy cream of the shawl 💚

    I love your knitting videos! I The buddleia is gorgeous even when shrunken, hopefully the replacement will fly off the needles. Also, not sure if you know or not, but the video is unlisted on your playlist, so I think the only people who see it have to go directly to the knitting playlist to find it - unless YT has glitched and it's not supposed to be visible at all?

    I know in china in the 17th and 18th century they would sew kneepads too for when it was cold. So maybe look for historical costuming in china and you might get some ideas for the kneepads!❤

    What a great name for a hand dyed business Dye Candy! I love it. The yarn and the beanie both are fabulous. I've given up stash busting I just seem to accumulate more and more, when you said you bought 5 balls, I though what only 5, that's allot of boarder. did the wonky donkey seams straighten out with blocking in the end, did it meet gauge?
    Cheers Claude for the content that I'm knitting to, always fun.

      @@RetroClaude I'm very naughty I never ever never gauge swatch, so far I've only had some Drops yarn shrink lengthwise in the arms and not by much. I believe in a wing and a prayer, measuring against something else that fits well, not even with a tape measure. I know I'm a philistine!

    Could you add a bit of a puff to the tops of the sleeves? The snug parts would be further down your arms then. Or totally disregard me, I don’t knit at all. ❤

    I have been learning quilting in the last year. One of the tips that helped me the most when trying to layout it out and get the colors right before i sewed it to together is to take a black and white photograph so you can check your darks and lights balance in the quilts. It keeps me from getting my colors wonky during the layout. I don't know if this wil help but I thought it might help you make a decision about the white boards verse all colorful.

    Thanks for the update! It’s always so cool to see what you’ve been making.
    I have a question, if you don’t mind - do you know what sort of terms I should use to try and find picture or video descriptions of the stitch for the flowers in the Buddleia Blouse? I started making one and got terribly confused at that part, and wasn’t sure how to find more information. Thank you!

    • @RetroClaude
      @RetroClaude ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen it called a long stitch or try a daisy or flower stitch. It frustratingly doesn't have an official name that I've ever seen but I have sometimes seen something similar when making bobbles so that might also help! I will try to make one myself too ☺️

    I’m so entertained to “know” someone who knit kneecaps. But beware! You may find yourself knitting one of those incredibly strange WWI balaclavas.
    The Maywick project is exactly the sort of insanity I would indulge in. I really, really hope that your sleeves block to a useable size, because I’d not, you’re going to have to figure out what you want to do about the color stripes. (Not that I ran short of one color of hand-dyed-with-invasive-plants-and-this-not-reproducible yarn on s remarkably similar project. That one is currently sitting on the Pile of Denial, until I decide what to do.)
    Finally, I think a light colored border around your hexipuffs would look wonderful. I fear that omitting the border might negate the pattern. In quilting, it’s common to use a variety of almost-whites, for visual interest. So I’d you’ve got random white yarn, you could use all of that in your project.
