Vespa is the name of the well known motorcycle, the brand was (and still is) the Piaggio.
Anyway, the Vespa 400 was an experiment from Piaggio to compete with the also well known Fiat 500, but it didn't last so long. Indeed the Vespa 400 is very rare!

These are very rare in Italy, they were built in France by a subsidiary of Piaggio and gave origin to the "no license" microcars for fourteeners which are still popular in France and Italy as well (though in Italy you need a "mini license" to drive them nowadays) ;-D

My Dad was a Vespa 400 Dealer in Victoria Texas in 1961. We sold 3 Vespa 400s. One red one, and two white ones (one that my Dad painted the top a metallic green). My sister and I would ride in the rear seat area of the red one, to and from our house to my Dad's shop a few miles away. I still have one Vespa 400 brochure.

We had quite a lot of them (and their big rival, the Isetta "Yogurt jar") in France back in 58-60 when I was a kid. Always loved them. Meanwhile, my dad owned a "big" car, then : A Renault 4CV. 4 doors, 4 seats, 4 cylinders, 4 stroke. To sum it up: a real car for the for of us with Mum, Dad and Sis😁.

Thanks! In around 1999, there was one Vespa car that could be won in a contest, in my city, Columbus, Ohio. Around that time there was a mini resurgence of interest in Vespa Scooters, and a new shop opened near to where I live, people were locating all sorts of "barn found" Vespa scooters. A buddy of mine found me one,....I still have it. It is partially restored, but still needs a lot of work and can't be driven. It is an Allstate Vespa from 1959, a 125 cc engine, with a very primitive front spring shock. I had & still have a 1985 Honda Elite 150cc scooter, that I bought brand new in '85, that I enjoy every summer.

    Fun fact:
Although the Vespa 400 are from an Italian design by an Italian company (Piaggio) , they were all made in Fourchambault - France
The reason was FIAT fearing competition with its FIAT 500/600 project on the Italian market, put pressure on Italian contractors, urging them to choose between FIAT and Piaggio. An "offer you can't refuse" ! (FIAT led the Italian market when Piaggio known for their scooters only was a rooky in the car industry)
Piaggio surrendered, left the Italian car market and chose ACMA the factory which already assembled Vespa scooters in France.
Because of heavy customs duties (no UE by then!), the Vespa 400 hardly sold in Italia.

Now, that said, I've got a (serious) question. Those micro cars were designed and made for narrow Italian streets. If you've been to Italy you know what I'm talking about. Isn't it genially scary to drive those on US roads?
