About Multiplayer: I’m old enough to remember when long distance phone calls were so expensive and rare, that the entire family will huddle around the land phone just to receive an extremely unstable phone call from my grandparents across the world. (Come to think about it, how did we set the time to wait for the phone call in the first place? I forgot...). Now we can play games with friends. Too bad my grandparents are no longer here to play games w me. Thank you for still giving us this amazing content. I love getting home from my 12 hour shift at work, knowing that this will be here waiting for me. Hope you are all staying safe!
One of my top things that changed videogames forever: Replacing manuals with in-game tutorials. Although I loved reading the manuals on my way back home after buying a new game, just to get into the right mood, I just love the fact that it's not necessary anymore to read a booklet to get ready to play. Especially in times of buying games in the PS store.
The multiplayer component in Death Stranding was really phenomenal. A really non-intrusive and purely positive multiplayer, without ever having to interact with others directly.
Thought the ability to save your game would be #1 on this list. Can't image any game today would work without it - rogue-likes notwithstanding, but even those save your progress in some way
Even auto-save would work. Been play P5 Royal and was 6ish hours in on my last play session when the power went out and I remembered there was no auto-save in that game.
Beatstruck I think that wouldn’t fit on this list because of how far back you’d have to go for having a save function, weather password or storage, being an actually feature in a game.
@@Beatstruck Saving games is the evolution of password saving. So yes, password saving is the thing that changed gaming. DLCs - sure, depending on game, content and price (or being free) they have potential to be both one of the most amazing and most outrageous innovations, but we've gotta admit, not having to buy add-ons separately on additional discs (like it was for Diablo or Neverwinter Nights) pushed idea of adding content post-release into mainstream.

Universal button maps between games. I still silently thank the video game gods every time I play for this one. I don't have to memorize 18 different button layouts when I switch between games anymore
Big innovation I was thinking about the other day: using scripted sequences instead of cutscenes to tell the story. When original half life came out, I was blown away by “stumbling” on events that seemed to be already in progress when I got there: scientists getting pulled into air ducts by unseen monsters in inaccessible rooms, soldiers unexpectedly turning on the friendly NPCs. You suddenly felt like the game was a world that would exist whether you were in it or not. Seems normal now, but it was groundbreaking at the time.
DOOM changed EVERYTHING back in 1993. First time I'd ever screamed out aloud or tried physically dodging a bullet playing a video game. Terrifying and yet so addictive. It set in place the rational for continuously upgrading my PC, back then just a humble 286
Hey Rob, great video. Just curious if the friends on mgo turned into real world friends or did you play other games with them after the servers shut down? Or did you never speak to them again?
Or if you had collected all the letters or shapes or other objects for the "cheat code" to that level, so you could just put it in and start from where you died
The correct answer is the Ability to save your game. Whether a battery on a cartridge, a memory card, or onboard hard drive, being able to save your game allowed video games to transform from short 1 sitting experiences into huge massive games with 30 hours or more of enjoyment. We take it for granted today that we can load up right where we left off rather than having to restart the whole game every time we turn on our gaming systems. Imagine playing RDR2 or a final fantasy without being able to save the game... oof.
What's crazy is that, in a few decade's time, we could be looking back at today's video games in the same way that we now look back at the original Doom, Wolfenstein, etc.

Nice video this week guys! I would say DLCs have been a very influential innovation in the industry, even though some companies abuse them or just use them as a way to increase their profits by not releasing the entire game at launch they've also been used to expand already great games.
Combination attacks. For example, Dishonored: If you go with the Rage mechanic you can easily turn one kill into 4 or 5. You can blow enemies away from you with Windblast and then summon a Rat Swarm one way, only to Blink assassination another enemy the opposite direction. Then Blink to the roof, stop time, fire off your cross bow at three enemies while pulling off a drop assassination. Also, interactive environments. Not the pop up text of classic RPGs, but the increased ability to break things, pick up random things like a glass to throw at an enemy, and use the full environment to your advantage.
Such an excellent game theory video. You guys always have great content but I enjoyed this especially. Really well done. Also, it reminded me of how big my game backlog is and made want to give FPS one more try. So basically, I need another 24 hours in the day. ;)
Damn, I’m a huge rob, PlayStation access, and Playstation as a whole fan. And I can’t imagine how freaking hard was to talk about the first point without mentioning super Mario 64
Don't forget when characters got voices rather than just random sounds. I remember multi-player on ET(Enemy Territory), something I could see Dave or Nath playing, did it in the office over a LAN at that time but also did it at home on the Internet, back in the late 90's/early 00's. Love playing stealth mode still playing AC:Odyssey after over 300hrs now purely as I LOVE Ancient Greece.
I think we should applaud for all the wonderful people who continue to make entertainment content. If it weren't for ps access I would've lost my sanity by now.
I remember how in awe I was to play one of those side scrolling games on my computer. Those early Duke Nukem or was it castlevania...it was a long time ago since those old shareware games held us captivated. I still have those original 5 1/4 floppies somewhere....along with the early versions of word and excel that came free with my first desk top computer....yikes!
No loading screens/camera cuts... God of War 4 did this to perfection! All loading takes place "behind the scenes" so you never have to wait for the next part of the world to load up!
I think my first online multiplayer experience was the original Doom 2 on PC. I called my friend, on a land line, so he could give me the info to set up my PC and join the match, then we connected on our dial-up internet (the modem screeching was terrifying than the game), and we played a few duels.
Hello, you’ve caught me about to start my Hard Mode run on Final Fantasy 7 Remake. I haven’t wanted a platinum this bad in quite awhile, and this is all that stands in my way!
The addition of dynamic soundtracks in games when the song changes to a diferent mix of the same song depending on what the character does or where the character is
Even now I still don't get the appeal of watching other people play games. It's one thing sitting next to your mate on the sofa waiting for your turn, but it's quite another thing spending five hours watching some loud randomer play through a game on Twitch that you yourself own.
We needed Dave to pop up in the bottom corner Dan Forden style with a board saying "Times Rob has put MGS in a Friday feature...." when the stealth section came on.
How could you talk about "Amazing Innovations" and NOT bring up The Legend of Zelda on the NES? I do understand that this is a Playstation channel, but LoZ brought in an innovation that LITERALLY changed gaming on every level. No longer were you talked with getting as far in a game as you could in one sitting. Now you could experience amazing stories with so many changes in what constitutes linearity.
Rob, could you do one on 7 tips to decide on the next videogame you play? During times of quarantine I seem to be really struggling with this due to having a 50 game backlog xD. Your tips would be greatly appeciated!
Kamil Drews DLC, making you pay more for more content. Not in itself a bad thing, but developers can fall into the trap of using it as a crutch not to sell you a complete game on release date. DLC should be additional missions and scenarios, not clarifying the main plot.
Mine would be the save game feature, to memory cards, to cloud saving. This effectively turned gaming from arcade/simple/ linear to anything possible. No more limitations on game size, because you could release a 4 disc game. This also lead developers to make more expansive games, instead of just highly difficult games (so players got their money’s worth). There is nothing wrong with higher difficulty ( unless you’re Rob), but a bunch of earlier games would have benefitted form better memory. The next breakthrough would be Tony Hawk series. Not for the gameplay, but getting licensed music (the amount they did) in a game. I always joked, best CD I ever owned was a video game. It also adds an extra level of immersion. Like listening to The Man Who Stole The World in MGS5, it added so much to the experience.
Imagine PlayStation creating an achievement called "Hello, you've caught me..." in honour of Rob.
It has to be a Platinum!
It would probably be a collectibles trophy in a FF game.
Surely it'd be for staring at the water physics for an obscene amount of time 😂

Memory cards, getting rid of those damn memory cards, losing your memory card was akin to losing a kidney. So glad they´re gone.
I do miss being able to bring your progress to a friends house
Such an excellent game theory video. You guys always have great content but I enjoyed this especially. Really well done. Also, it reminded me of how big my game backlog is and made want to give FPS one more try. So basically, I need another 24 hours in the day. ;)
The Only thing that I don't appreciate enough is this channel
Love the content
Stay safe👍👍
Can't wait till you Nath and Dave back to the office, hopefully Delsin will be back in the videos more 😊
I don’t play games much anymore because I’m in school to become a game dev, I love games that much
I love how Rob went from "no offense but maybe I want to start shipping Cloud and Jessie" to "bring it on, Tifa who!" in a matter of seven days.
You caught me thinking of 7 game-soundtracks that just were so good I still get goosebumps just by hearing the main theme....
The addition of dynamic soundtracks in games when the song changes to a diferent mix of the same song depending on what the character does or where the character is
Can I mod my PS4 to have Rob's popping up for every achievement? I kinda need it to LIVE!
"Who even is Tifa?"
*_BIG MOOD_*
I'm an old guy, so my first online gaming experience was Killzone on the PS2. Remember it well.
This might be my favourite video you've ever done
standardized controls is a pretty big innovation to me personally especially thinking back to old resident evil's tank shooting style lol
I remember when Lara Croft's face became animated. Her mouth would move, her eyebrows would furrow. I loved it
Rob, could you do one on 7 tips to decide on the next videogame you play? During times of quarantine I seem to be really struggling with this due to having a 50 game backlog xD. Your tips would be greatly appeciated!
Rob, MGO was my first online console experience as well - in a same way: I was just curious what will happen when I connect PS2 to RJ45 cable ;)
I think that Team Fortress 1 (Quake 1) was the first game i played online om dial Up modem... Yes im old.
For me modern games began with Morrowind. Absolute masterpiece.
Please do the top 7 "innovations" that changed video games for the worst. Not everything is all sunshine and rainbows in the industry, Rob.
