Niall again a superb contribution. I hope the Ocean Race realizes the value you add. All the ORBs and clips are worthless without a story being told. A story that reaches the heart of the viewers!
Aaaaahhhh I *MISS* the last TOR and don't want to wait for the NEXT! I've been around long enough that I still automatically think of the race as "The Whitbread" and I couldn't have enjoyed this addition more. The OBRs and socials made it really fun. Thanks Niall and all your team, you all made it great!
“I’m being… gently caressed by the foil. It’s nice… til the spiky part gets me.” 😆 It’s so great to see Niall and so many folks from the Race again after all these months, and to see inside the boats! Looking forward to seeing some IMOCAs up close at the Transat NY-Vendée next year!
Appreciate Niall pointing out how fast these designs are being updated by showing us the older Hugo Boss design--and that's only a few years old. Excited to see what the ship designers do next!
Thank you, Niall, for a sweet insight into what is presently happening with the Ocean Race. You know that those who get hooked are always hungry for updates of details. As a technically minded Science teacher, details are fantastic!
I think, Charal goes a very interesting direction: lifting the boat up `on three foiling legs`. Thank you so much for this aftermath-portrait ! Good luck and success to the whole Ocean Race Team.
This is an interesting development. In the Defi speed run Charal was fully foiling - now it’s clear why so. However, they weren’t terribly faster in that run and the question is whether this is stable in waves. Also, they may change the Rules.
@@alexandermenck6609 I thought the same about the change of rules, and of course the long range success of a `third foil` depends totally on the wave conditions: The boat would run far more patient in low waves... and crash even harder downwards, when the waves are high. So maybe the forces attacking rigg and mast would even be worse... Thank you for answering, Sir !
I missed these videos. I'm glad you addressed the amazing OBRs, the skill of the teams, and how the boats are changing - there's always gonna be a vocal group of naysayers against change. But we need change, to evolve the race and also to promote responsible climate action
This was really great insight into things going on after the race. At 5:27 I think I see someone at the helm and people out on the beam of Charal. That would be exciting if some of the designs had an inside and outside cockpit?
Fantastic vlog as always. I love the passion and dedication of the sailors and teams. I miss my daily Ocean race team vlogs and look forward to the next one. Greg 🇬🇧😊
OBR's are a gamechanger and critical to the future of the sport. It would be more expensive but they need to be "OBF's" and let a shore team edit the raw footage. Double-triple the coverage.
Big lesson, the media team needs more budget. This channel, the site and the app is what connects people to the racing and that is what the sponsors look for. I know pro's aint cheap, but they will pay for themselfs long term
I'm just guessing but maybe Volvo backing out as lead sponsor hurt their budget for 22/23. But now there is a documentary due out soon produced with Warner Bros Discovery, maybe this collaboration will help bring in a bigger audience?
@@bbtodd Sounds great, I would watch that. Last edition had amazing content coming from the boats, I am not complaining about the onboard reporters. I felt I was following teams in the race, instead of getting the big picture and scoops from here. In a way team media channels were out performing this channel.
@@TheOceanRace Thanx for asking. This channel should be the one stop race shop and if you want more, you go to the team channels. Media goes out first on this channel. You guy's have lot's of cool people to put on camera, but I would like 2 main hosts to keep it consistent day to day. 1 main show per day 20-50 minutes episodes, morning and evening update would be great 2-4 minutes episodes. The main show needs to have the scoops, the juicy drone shots, the live interviews, the shore team interviews, the designer interview and all the other cool stuff. The updates are racing only, short and sweet. I felt you guy's were under supported last edition, the content was good, but not consistent.
@@dajobra Thanks for the feedback, some great ideas. We do what we can with the resources we have, and of course there's only one Niall! We'd love to expand our content and do longer more in-depth coverage during the race, but last race we only had a small team of people who need days off etc. It's good to know you're engaged and watching though. Thanks for the comments, and rest assured we will always try to maximise our resources to please the fans 💙
For what can be improved on the boats: I have seen a video a couple of years go I think, where someone put out some of the improvements that could be easily made to the boats to make them just a little bit faster. Things like, the railing being collapsible or at least have a shroud that is aerodynamically better. Having, like we saw on one boat, the boom as close as possible to the hull and have like a shout to the deck to keep pressure in the sail. Sure, it will maybe bring 0.1knots, but at a distance of 20-30k NM, it adds up.
Are there any news regarding the Kevin Escoffier situation? I know it's been months since the incident, and I know that Holcim ditched him as skipper. It's been radio silence since the accusations arose in June. Fans would like to know what happened! Is he rotting in jail right now for an assault on his own team member? Actually now that I think about it, the mere fact that the issue is being swept under the rug says a lot... 😕
i think holcim prb was by far the best boat in the ocean race. They were completely dominant in the first half of the race, then lost their mast and i think the team was significantly downgraded after Escoffier stepped down and therefore lost the race.
Obviously, a lesson learnt (missing here) is that the 65 will disappear. There are a lot of reasons why, but nothing about that has been presented here. Pity. Essentially, the multi-purpose IMOCAS are around and can do TOR as an „add-on“. The pinnacle for these boats will always be the Vendee Globe. TOR will become an incubator for future TVG sailors which then will become teachers for „rookies“ - that’s the only way I see that TOR remains. Essentially what is going on right now.
How about not allowing the predominant race sponsor with unlimited funds to have a boat interest to remove the home cooking official rulings of the race!
@@TheOceanRace I am not the original poster, but, here is a dream, let's have Niall report on the IMOCA races and the Vendee and the Ocean Race. That would tie it all together!
I've learned that this race has lost me as a fan. Seeing boats with crew in a wheel-house takes away all the magic, and the ability to relate to the sailing we (most) do. The VO65 gave us a lot of great racing, and some of the most amazing sailing video ever produced. Now it is just boring, and I predict that there will be no more editions of this race.
I wonder what John Fisher would say about the enclosed cockpit of an imoca. If only he didn't drown after being washed out of the open cockpit of the VO65 by a breaking wave in the middle of the southern ocean.
The OBR's and Social media made it bigger than sailing. The old Whitbread race we would hear snippets some cases days old. Hear of dismasts and the like But now we live the moments with the crew. See the emotion. See the adventure. I personally am not a sailor but love every aspect of what I have seen . You can be sure that this will bring spectators ,aspiring crew and skippers and more importantly sponsors who will see return on their investment by the coverage that is now available. Sailing purists will not be happy but think back to when they introduced the one day cricket series and the purist said cricket was finished.
Niall again a superb contribution. I hope the Ocean Race realizes the value you add. All the ORBs and clips are worthless without a story being told. A story that reaches the heart of the viewers!

Cannot wait for the next edition.
Yes!! finally new content after a few months after the ending of the race
This is one of those channels where I always let the ads play all the way through. My small way of supporting this great content 😉

We didn’t get a shot of it in the video, but it was actually a light on the outside of the cockpit 😂

Will there be 65's in the next ocean race? As I understood it the reason there was no a whole fleet was that TOR didn't give them enough notice

The boats need two sound proof shock insulated sleeping pods.

Seems to me they need to work on visibility for inshore races and the tech aspects to prevent all the dismastings .
I wonder what the fictional Captain Jack Aubrey would make of foiling sailboats...

For me all thes development is making it less interesting for the spectator, especially for the ocean race. It disconnects the sailor from the sea.
