    Respect to Doddy for riding tarmac to offroad trails. So few people don't these days, that this sport could EASILY be called carbiking and i hate that. I ride up to 25km to one of my favourite spots. It used to be huge part on tarmac or footpaths. But I used google maps satellite view and explored a lot to find as much of the route as possible to go through gravel/agricultural/woodland roads or some hidden woods paths. Keep it up Doddy!

    About the question on using a tapered fork on 1 1/8 frame. It can be done, CC has a special ahead set for it. The thing is it will mess the geo of the bike and it won't look pretty.

    15:00 I had good success with externally routing an Ascend II Dropper Seatpost along the seat tube down to the front derailleur mount (1x modified setup) and then following the disabled cable's route (down tube internal) . Doing this on an Cube LTD Race 2016 frame. You can actually rotate the external cable pull assembly (180 degrees) on this type of post if you take it apart.

    Heey Doddy. Love your Q&A sections and tech show. Just wanted to tell you there is new bearings and cups avaible to get a 1,5-1 1/8 fork to fit on a 1 1/8 frame. This also work vice verse. So you could fit a 1 1/8 fork on a tapered frame and you could also fit a tapered fork on a straight steerer tube. Zitto got bearings and cups for this. Best of Regards Tonky

    Curiously I had to relube the clutch on my XT derraileur as it seemed like it came light on it (only two months after getting new bike with it). Found out during a ride that it wasnt resetting position after shifting. I just put the green grease from Park Tool in it and so far no problems. This happened back in December.

    The 2011 Shinobi is still relevant. Amazing bike and I still have it as a backup. A real mini-enduro bike years before they became popular. Mine was immediately upgraded with a shorter stem, a wider and raised bar, and a KS Lev, and is now set up with a DHF 2.5 upfront. It's still in my garage and used regularly. Interestingly, my guests tend to prefer it to a high end Pivot Mach 6. It's also not bad for long backcountry day or hut to hut rides.

      It was me that asked the question. And the reason i asked was because i had seen a company in RSA converting new forks to 1/18th crown and steerers. I had asked if there was a company within the UK that could do this conversion rather than having to send it abroad. The frame is from 1997 and does not fit the Hope conversion kit. The only solution is to convert the crown and steerer or buy a fork that has 1/18th steerer already installed. Dodster wasnt wrong- he just didnt read the question correctly

    • @kubagajda7347
      @kubagajda7347 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dwaynerbear Well then, if your frame has internal headtube diameter of 44mm and has pressed-in cups, then you can change the lower one to EC44 cup, which can accomodate 1 1/2 steerer with no problem. You can also go to Cane Creek headset finder, choose the bike you have from the list and it'll tell you wether this is possible or not. Changing lower headset cup is by far the cheapest and safest way of solving this problem.

    #AskGMBNTech -- Not a question so much, but for people that still need to get 1 1/8" straight steerer tubes due to frame limitations, MRPbike.com (Mountain Racing Products) still offers some of their forks with straight steerer options. Specifically I'd look at the Loop SL and the Loop TR, because these are probably closest to the forks that you would find on older bikes with old school EC34 headtubes! Thanks for keeping me sane in quarantine, cheers.

    They do make 1 1/8 to 1 1/2 conversion kits. The taper just sits about 10-15mm below the head tube. I did it on my 2017 felt to put a Fox float 34 on it.

    Hey Doddy, i have a question for #AskGMBNTech . Currently i own a Ghost lector 4.9 LC Hardtail. I am willing to upgrade a dropper post and decided to buy the crankbrothers highline 3. Preferably i want to get the 170mm, but after measuring my seattube and my seatpost I realized that the bottom of the dropper could hit the screws from the seattube bottlecage. I am not sure if it would but it is a thing of a few millimeters. Do you have any suggestions? Go for the 150mm or get another dropper post with a shorter insertion length?
    I am still running a 2x drivetrain so I need to buy a vertical lever right?

    #askgmbntech I have a 2017 Vitus Escarpe Deore that has a 2017 spec Rockshox Sektor Fork with 140mm of travel. I haven't ridden it for about 18 months due to severely breaking my right femur, twice, 51 weeks apart and while preping it for the summer the other day I noticed the right side of the fork was hissing under high speed compression. Are the seals done? What else could cause this? Also, while it was parked the rear shock leaked a bunch of oil. It has always leaked a little but It seems to operate ok, it's not super bouncy or anything like that and it seems to have stopped leaking currently. Should I service it? It's not quiet reached the hours for it's first service interval yet and I know they can be overfilled from the factory.
    Thanks for the tips. Love everything you guys do

So put Stan's valve stems in and then had a small bottle of Stan's but I'm also running 27.5 Plus Tires so with that little bottle I just split it in half and empty the bottle and both of them because they're such a big tires and I perfectly happy with it I mean it rides better it feels better is so much more comfortable it's a trek Roscoe 8 so I'm riding a hardtail but I didn't realize how soft I was riding it with tubes and it was still comfortable and right now I'm at 20 psi or 22 in the rear 20 in the front. And I also bought my cherry going clipless so I'm experiencing the best of to new worlds right now and it's been pretty goddamn amazing if I must say I've been able to do a lot of riding with the weather here in Iowa and it's been awesome and the trails are opening up and it's cool I was totally stoked and digging it

      Bogan Phelps keep your little Stans bottle for topping up. You can buy a larger bottle to fill it rather than buying an applicator

    Totally off the subject here; but we have a 1996 Giant ATX 980 full suspension MTB we would like to replace the rear shock. It currently has a RST RK-9 X 3.0" can you provide what upgrades we have a choice with?

    Hi new to mtb just bought a new Vitus nucleus vrs 27 and want to go tubeless. The tyres are vigilante + trail boss can I simply remove inner tube and add tubeless valve and sealer? What valve type would you recommend?

    Hi Soddy, I have been looking at buying a 11-50 tooth 11 speed cassette for my bike and was wondering if I need to change my rear mech to accommodate the larger chain sprocket, I currently have a 42 tooth? Thanks in advance #AskGMBNTech

    I have an entirely level bike (Giant ATX). The bike has an inexpensive suntour XCT fork. What can I do to take care of it? Is it possible/worth servicing it?

    Hi Doddy, love the show, awesome work! I've got a tyre question. So I've got an emtb, the Specialized Levo, I'm running the original tyre in front, Specialized's Butcher 29x2.6, and in the rear I've got a Maxxis DHR II 29x2.4 (the original one had a bead problem). I want to match the front tyre with a Maxxis. What tyre would you recommend? I'm between the DHF or another DHR II, both on a 29x2.6 config. I like the front tyre to be wider. I mainly ride in city and for commuting, in slippery roads, and doing some trials sections and jumping whenever I can. Thanks!

    #AskGMBNTech how would you calculate rolling resistance, I am starting XC, and heard about this.

      It does not matter that much to know, but tout Can check tire rolling resistance on rollingresistance.com

      Tricky question Raphael! It's still a deep subject that can be discussed a lot! If you test on a completely flat surface a skinny high-pressure tire will be fastest but if you introduce any sort of bumps the rolling resistance is affected by "kick-back" (just ask any roadie that used 18mm tyres back in the day! 😂). Larger wheels roll over bumps better and adjusting tyre pressure to be able to absorb and smooth out terrain makes a massive difference but it's all compromise.

    Hey Doddy, I’m going to have to replace my bottom bracket on my trail bike soon. It’s a Dub BB from Sram. There are loads of more premium BB’s out there that cost $100 or more. Would I notice any benefits performance wise from going with a more premium BB? #askgmbntech

    9:30 None of them, think Archer D1X Trail is the best option for electronic shifting, any rear derailleur can be used, no electronic cable.
    yea it might not look as clean but it does the job, and if you smash the derailleur to destruction you can just swap it without losing as much money.

      it's awesome, but going against the industry giants it will probably loose out.

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lose out? They might not gain popularity and be well for beginners and seen on bikes in shops. I don't think so, I use it and will continue to use it. I use Box One Rd, sunrace cassette. I will see how it performs long-term. Hope Box One will survive with forgaded parts I stead of casted, so far no problems. With D1X Trail, first version was not so good it had issues with water getting in but D1X Trail does not, I tried in snow, puddles. It also has app and can be fine tuned like Sram can.

    As a weekend warrior rider, with a basic RockShox Recon RL fork, would someone of a intermediate rider be able to perceive any increased performance, damping, trail feel etc. upgrading to a mid-level fork, or would it mostly be a placebo effect until my riding ability increases? #AskGMBNTech

    I am a novice MTB rider, I have a 2009 Rocky Mountain Vertex 10 Hardtail, I would like to update some parts, I can't seem to find any specs on the bike. I would like to update the fork suspension, it currently has Marzocchi Bomber 100mm, I would like to get an updated fork and possibly do a 110mm-120mm fork, can you make a recommendation? I have no idea where to begin, I want something that will fit, also do the forks come with the bearings an everything needed? Also how can I figure out what brakes will fit, I would like to update and upsize the brakes. Thanks in advance!
