All drummers The Mars Volta ever had are awesome! In the past TMV were too exhausting for me to listen to. Discovering the different tour cycles through TH-cam now is a blessing and so much fun! Hope to be able to catch 'em live in 2023.
Same dude,..i needed almost 5 years to got my ears and mind trained for those melodies,.chaos and art,...i wasnt grown up enuff in music taste to understand WHATS goin on there,...
@sharifelmahdi9385 100%. I know us fans like to debate about who was the best fit or the best player, but each drummer, including the current one, has brought something interesting to TMV.
This is a great show, but Trinkets is amazing. I have no idea why they did the album version the way they did when this jam would’ve been so much better on the album. It’s the perfect bridge between the older jam style and the newer style they developed.
The audio is rough at the beginning, but I admit, it gets a better, throughout the set. I wish I loved these latter era MV tunes as much as I LOVE the earlier Frances & Amputechture era tunes. I want to love these, SO badly. Great quality footage, though! 100%!!!!
This is still a really enjoyable performance especially given the quality. Trinkets is so beautiful and crazy. Whip Hand goes off here too. So much fun! can't believe this has been so long ago now :o
first off, comparing them performing here to when they were doing the bedlam in goliath tour isn't very wise, just like comparing Thomas pridgen who, let's be honest, is known for going over the top, shouldn't be compared to deantoni parks, whose solo stuff isn't half bad. I love noctourniquet, as I loved bedlam in goliath and Frances the mute when I listened to them years ago. great band and talented artists can do what they want haha
what a controversial opinion Kendall, and to have it put forth by an intellectual heavyweight like you....wow words cannot describe how i feel thank you
They’ve given us everything in there performances over the years, now they seem so chill n older n not as crazy on stage, seems time to close the chapter on TMV, With JD n Ikey gone there just not the same. Thanku Omar n Cedric for everything including ATDI🙏🙏🙏
Read many complaints regarding this album's sound, especially regarding Deantoni's drumming. These guys were always about reinventing and challenging themselves, Deantoni's drumming is half of the album's odd charm. Also, these songs' arrangements were heavily processed in the studio, it's probably their least suitable LP for live performances IMO.
Yea I love this album… it’s like how everyone loves a band for doing different things and pushes the envelope yet they get mad when they take it “too far” (in some prog senses pushing the prog sound so far it’s simplified… I know it’s weird to say) I always respect the spirit of this group and I love all their albums… they are all different and that’s cool with me. I also consider that these guys were probably burnt out.. they toured with ATDI and toured a lot during TMV, I could never blame them for being burnt out.
@@christopherlopez2491 I have modest respect for this album at best. The reason why I find it underwhelming is not the production or the style, it's simply that there aren't enough great songs on there. There are 5 good songs, out of which 2 are fantastic and should be in their live setup. Any other album has at least 3 awesome songs on it, IMO.
@@nebojsadurmanovic2268 See, this is where I differ. I fell in love with these songs as live numbers and found they lacked the same kinetic impact on record. Deantoni is so raw here and they sound like such a varied and dynamic unit that I'd have enjoyed the record moreso if they were like that and less glitched out
@@darryljudd7361 From the looks of things, it seemed pretty mutual. Jon wasn't happy and needed a change. He's my favorite drummer TMV's ever had, but I like Deantoni Parks a lot so I'm glad TMV introduced me to him.
sam holik i love their cover of memories, been jammin that and 'back up against the wall'. did you hear Antemasques show at the Observatory?? tons of new material not yet released but live
@@mattkorzeniowski697 we still dont know that. They are really wacky and omar is really fucking moody. Cedric also said he was putting out a solo album like 5 years ago. Never happened. They say a lot of things that never happen.
Takeaways from this set: 1. The setlist is shit. I would have been nearly as disappointed at this as I was when I saw ATDI four years ago. 2. Cedric's shenanigans takes away from the show. I get stage presence, but he is clearly trying to make up for the fact that his former drug-induced energy is no longer there.
watch em in 2003 then, what you want from these guys... Omar and Cedric gave the world 8 amazing albums of rock music between two bands. Search their Trobadour set in Weho... its just audio but it's more your speed.
I really wish I hadn't came across this, The Mars Volta are fukin legends and I'm a huge fan but this performance was absolutely pathetic, that drummer sounds horrendous and Cedrick sounded so poor, Goliath is my favourite Volta track and they completely destroyed it, the whole set list was a joke. I'm so glad I wasn't there, I would have been mortified beyond belief.
I know its just opinion but these guys are possibly my favourite band of all time and a few of their shows have blown me away but this was almost embarrassing. Even Omar seemed a bit off
They're amazing, but so arrogant. I guess the crowd were lucky to get any of their older songs at all. I'd be livid if I had to stand in a muddy field for an hour listening to improvised wailing. I wish they'd realise it's not sell-outey to put your fans first. And ffs, a big outdoor venue like that needs more than 3 dudes and a laptop. Omar proved he could compose tracks with more instruments, all this stripped back stuff is nonsense. Cake without icing. Mars Volta used to be cake (made with brown flower and honey) with icing, cream, opium, sprinkles, cherries and more icing.
This band is amazing but..... Now the sound and how play the instruments its terrible, I really miss the real MARS VOLTA when THOMAS PRIDGE played the drums.....
I keep coming back to this one. Noctourniquet is an overlooked masterpiece.
