- Kenneth MacMillan’s powerful telling of Manon (Sarah Lamb) and Des Grieux’s (Vadim Muntagirov) tragic love is a masterpiece of modern ballet, set to music by Massenet. Subscribe to our channel and find out more at www.roh.org.uk...
Kenneth MacMillan’s source for Manon was the 18th-century French novel by Abbé Prévost, already adapted for opera by Massenet and Puccini. Renowned dance musician Leighton Lucas and his assistant Hilda Gaunt provided a score drawn from across Massenet’s music, including his famous yearning Elégie as the theme for the lovers. The premiere was given on 7 March 1974, with the lead roles of Manon and Des Grieux danced by Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell. The ballet quickly became a staple of The Royal Ballet’s repertory, and a touchstone of adult, dramatic dance.
MacMillan found new sympathy with the capricious Manon and her struggle to escape poverty. Designs by his regular collaborator Nicholas Georgiadis reflect this, depicting a world of lavish splendour polluted by miserable destitution. MacMillan’s spectacular ensemble scenes for the whole Company create vivid, complex portraits of the distinct societies of Paris and New Orleans. But it is Manon and Des Grieux’s impassioned pas de deux - recalling the intensity of MacMillan’s earlier Romeo and Juliet - that drive this tragic story, and make Manon one of MacMillan’s most powerful dramas.

Vadim Muntagirov is phenomenonal in everything he does, but I think this is his very best role. It’s heartbreaking. He is such a sweetheart and a romantic soul (just my opinion from watching all his videos), and he portrays the characters perfectly
Sarah is The most wonderful dancer..she and Vadim dance so beautifully together in this ballet
Thank you for posting Sarah and Vadim! So believeably volnurable and breathtakingly perfect they are!
True chemistry between both of them 🔥❤️❤️🌺🌷👏
Makes me cry every single time
Gorgeous!! Love it so much. Sarah and vadim are such an amazing pair.
Nooooo! Why'd you cut off the end ? 😭 never mind I have my ticket for the 12th of October to see Nela and Roberto do this .... too excited for words

Heartbreaking and Breathtaking!!💖Muntagirov and Lamb truly embody the agony and passion of Manon and Des Grieux trying to hold on to someone you love but mortality will always be the factor the shadow of death!!❤She truly looked broken shattered deceased and he desperate obsessed loving just to keep his beloved alive Bravo!!💞
made me cry :(
Breathtaking!
Could you please please please add the last two minutes?

absolutely stunning...
Thank you 🥺♥️
Beautiful🌹💐!
Just fabuleux and wonderfull to see my god out of this World. Edward Arckless
I'm in love with Sarah
Oh my god.
Gorgeouss 💫💫💫
3:11 She almost looks like she's crying
Beutiful 😖
what is this piece called?
Sylvie does it better
You cut the best part: Des Grieux realizing she's gone.
It is so refreshing to see people that love their art
An extremely difficult pas de deux, for the woman especially to be at once so seemingly limp and weak, while moving in ways that require utterly steely inner strength. Amazing choreography. The soloists here do indeed catch all the tragic anguish of the story... alas, one of the oldest stories on earth
I have the dvd and this part never ceases to make me cry. The artistry of Sarah and Vadim is absolutely phenomenal. Lamb/Muntagirov and Nunez/Muntagirov are the best partnerships out there, I can never have enough of seeing them working together.
More Lamb/Mutnagirov, please, they don't work together often enough.
Couldn’t agree more
Honestly the best version of this pas de deux I’ve ever seen! Sarah just looks so believably broken by the end and Vadim looks so utterly desperate to keep her alive. Absolutely heartbreaking 💔💔
Eleanor Copp They are indeed great, but no one beats Cope and Guillem in this one, if you ask me!
@@sylfiden1 I agree! Guillem and Cope are the definitive couple in this pas de deux.
I agree about this being better. I just went and watched the Cope and Guillem version and I think Sarah does an amazing job of making you think it is actually HER that is dying, and mustering the very last drop of her strength.
Meravigliosi
Not everything has to be a competition on who is better! This version is stunning and so are other versions! All dancers are different, you can’t compare them!
2:43 and 3:03 catch me as i fall, how beautiful
She portrayed her character really really well. For someone like me who have no idea nor any background about this ballet, I immediately get the message they're trying to portray. Very very much impressive 😍
I agree because i know very well Manon the French Novel of the eighteen century and also 2 fantastic opera manon of the French Gounod a wonderful music and Manon Lescaut of the Italian Puccini, also amazing music
Absolutely heartbreaking!! Sarah portrays Manon as finally grasping the consequences of her careless actions, while Vadim portrays De Grieux as always loving her in spite of her betrayals. Both dancers capture the emotions of the entire ballet.
C ❤ ❤ ❤
The acting is just beyond amazing here💕
Oh, my God, where's the END!!?? How could you DO THAT!!??
i know its like having gone without gable saying "quite frankly dear i dont give a dam". Its so emotional watching him shake her and then crying. one of the greatest ballets ever.
i had to watch this a second time. the pain in her face was unbelievable!
These Sarah clips are a huge boost whilst recovering from Covid. Feeling better already.😀
BEAUTIFUL! 👏👏👏👏🌹😊.
Breathtaking performance!
The hauntingly beautiful music combined with the tragic tale of Manon, choreographed by the masterful Kenneth Macmillan - perfection!
Her expressions are everything.
I feel so moved by Sarah and Vadim... Thank you ROH for posting the video. I’d just like to join the request below and ask, could you please upload the last bit of this scene? Thank you again!
Acto con un final Profundamente emotivo y amoroso, como una gran despedida de alguien que se aleja.
No entiendo cómo los pas de deux de manon pueden ser tan perfectos y hermosos, NO LO ENTIENDO!!!!!!!! son divinos
Did you see Sylvie Guillem ??
Can I just say...that her point was just INSANE??!?!?!?! Like really. there was point where I was just staring at her feet for a solid 15 seconds.
Saw jasim naghdi and william Bracewell last night. What an incredible performance by both. It was like looking ar Anthony dowell in disguise. Those slow awkward movements are incredibly difficult and he pulled them off to perfection. Heavenly performance by both her acting was incredible.
i am speechless. thank you so very much for uploading this PDD. vadim makes it look so easy. in those twist throw lifts he is so very strong, he never looks unsure as to his hold on lamb.
and she really doesn't hold anything back when she collapses in his arms. total abandonment, knowing he not going to drop her.
only part where it seems the lift is a bit of a struggle is 1:10.
basically doing a dead lift!
i thought cope and guillam were powerful, but this duo are also so very good.
please add the beginning of the PDD when they are both on the ground. that is important!
One of the best pas des deux ever choreographed.
Damn, Vadim is packing.
She's as dead as my pointe shoes😨
Beautiful coreography, good Job Sarah Lamb, nice performance both, lovely.
Ah, Massenet.
*sob*
So movingly beautiful .....
The most tragic ballet I've ever watched and in a way that Giselle or R&J are not. At all.
The most operatic if you wish. The PDD first act and the subsequent scene at her bedroom are the high points for them. From there onwards is downwards.
And the heartbreak at this PDD is the hardest to watch. As a matter of fact you can witness that at the end of the ballet. Check, especially the female dancer expressios.
This ballet was chosen by Aurelie Dupont for her farewell along Roberto Bolle.
One of the all time greatest PDD's.
OMG so beautiful♥♥♥
Absolutely marvellous xxxxxxx
Thank you very much! 💐
My word!
Truly amasing!
oh my god
Brava!!!! 😍😍😍
❤
Vadim-such a generous and present partner. I’m a Nela fan, but this is still the best, most visceral end pas de deux I’ve seen.
3:12 that lift ,,, breathtaking
what a combination of excellency.
Lindp demais
Prognosis negative...
Oh my gad
💕💕💕
Exquisite!!🥰
Fantastisch!!!
Hermosooooo!!!!!
Wow
Omg
Hermoso!!
Fantastico
ES HERMOSO!!😍🤩🤩
does anybody know the name of this piece? it sounds so pretty and sad
It's an orchestral arrangement of a section of Massenet's oratory La Vierge, called "Rêve infini! Divine extase". Massenet's music is the loveliest 💔
what is title of this dance?
Manon- Swamp Pas de Deux
