Can you make a video on NC Helene toxic mud on homesteads? Radioactive? Plastuc toxins? Sewage? Death? Disease? They are allowing sheep, cows, horses to eat the grass & children running around in it.
Your city may say no chickens, but do they have a prohibition on quail? My city also prohibits chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys but because of the wording on the statute, other unlisted birds are not prohibited.
I am used to dealing with allelopathy around our yard. We have a large amount of garlic mustard in our area. If I want my garden to do well I've got to be on top of removing all garlic mustard I find in the raised beds. I leave many of the other weeds to help the soil microbes multiply. Our homemade compost with composted chicken manure, leaves, and charcoal are part of our gardens regular diet.
Today was 'get next year's soil ready' day. I shredded my entire compost pile down to basically pulp a couple of days ago. All of this year's soil that was used in buckets got run through my cement mixer with the shredded compost goo added along with some 5 year old sheep manure a farmer friend gave me. That's my scientific term for today by the way......goo. There were a lot of leftover tomatoes in there. LOL. All in, there's about 4 yards of soil/compost mix there. I piled it up in my soil bins, and covered it with tarps. It'll sit there and cook until freeze up and a bit next spring as well. I did this last year as well, and it seems to work pretty well. A lot of friend's gardens struggled this year due to the weather. While it sure wasn't the summer of 2023, I still made out better than anyone I know as far as production goes, so I must be doing something right.
@@GardeningInCanada I know a lot of folks are against burying compostable stuff because "anerobic bacteria bad" thoughts. Next spring, maybe I'll send you a sample of the soil from my pile to play around with to see what you find. Maybe it'll give you inspiration for a video on the pros/cons of mixing your compost into soil to rot vs waiting until it's composted before adding it.
Did you say you were in Calgary and hence the wind? That wouldn't surprise anyone who knows southern AB for its wind. I have a deep compost floor in my one chicken coup, I used the once a year cleanup to make a no-till bed ... it should be composted enough by the time I use it next spring. I put small wood chips, leaves and fir needles on the floor so a good mix of organics. The other coup has a wooden floor :( it sucks to clean BUT wood pellets for pellet stove works great with needles shavings and wood chips -- it takes longer to break down perhaps because it's to connected to the earth.
Maybe think about coturnix quail if you still want birds! We have 5 stealth quail on our terrace balcony 👀 very quite, much less space, and very cute. A bit more work in terms of feeding, they only produce small eggs, and don't live as long, but they're a wonderful animal and I've found them to be a really nice alternative for more limited conditions (but I'll get chickens as soon as I can, don't get me wrong 😅)
Excellent video, as usual. Gardening here in Medicine Hat has been challenging for many reasons, and soil quality is just a small part. I grow peppers which are big magnesium users, but instead of adding Magnesium Sulphate (epsom salt for us laymen) i just spray it on the the leaves. Works a treat for peppers, tomates, and roses! Probably a few others, too, but mostly my peppers.
Hi Ash, question: if I apply urea in the fall (November) to my vegetable garden beds will the nitrogen still be present in the spring ? I practice no dig and reason that it may help decompose the build up of organic matter … please comment- thanks
I bought bags of "black earth" at our local home hardware this summer. I've bought it before and no issue. This time it smelled really bad, and what surprised me is the lettuce I grew in it was inedible and tasted like the soil smelled. So I read the bag... And apparently it now contains community green bin material.... Sounds good until you realize that animal waste is put in it. Guess it wasn't fully composted? I'll never buy it again. QUESTION: is it safe? How long will it take to break down? 👍🇨🇦😊🙏🍎
I know this may be a silly question about manure of all things but, as rabbit manure is one of the rare( Idon't know any others) manures to be considered cold and good to be added fresh to soils, is that a exception?
At Rona you can buy pelleted hen manure from Comp. In Quebec. No smell. I use it for garlic fertilizer at planting and in the spring. I find city compost has every colour of plastic, glass and stones.
Picked up some contaminated soil from a neighbor a couple years ago, flowers did not mind, but the cucumbers and peas did nada. Make my own hot compost, leaf mold and worm castings, do not trust anything from big box stores or even nurseries. Enjoy your videos, Stay Well!!!
Thank you for your videos especially then about fungus in the soil...I have thrown away many plants thinking that they were sick or change the soil. Now I take my fork like a the mermaid 🧜♀️
All of my "weeds" plantain all over my property and lawn have been speckled with white or completely covered... was a dry summer... nothing else in the lawn had that on them. Any idea what it is and why it would target plantain? Probably happened because I was thinking about harvesting some and drying it for my apothecary 🤦🏻♀️. Darn old Murphy! 😂 but seriously though, any thoughts from anyone would be lovely, I thank you in advance.

That’s really tough. Are there perennials? If not then sure. Are you planting in the next few months? If not sure. The biggest issue is that those dang things have roots that are incidious. You would really need to soak the soil which is always scary to me. Have you tried solarizing?

About the micronutrients... I disagree completely with you when you said skip them without mentioning that in some cases like mine where I have almost 8 of pH and based on the soil tests my soil is also totally lacking of iron and zinc so I have to apply micro nutrients frequently to keep my plants happy plus the fact that started to apply elemental sulfur to slowly lower the pH. Putting all soils in the same basket and generalizing and saying skip micronutrients in general is wrong.
If you have hard info on your soil and are not guessing absolutely add them. But if you are “thinking it’s an xyz” you really need to be careful because you will do some damage. The reason why I am so cut and dry on not using them is because they are VERY difficult to get out of a soil system once they are in. Many are not water soluble which is generally the default “water it out” solution for over fertilizer. I’d prefer someone who suspects micronutrient issues to try foliar applications first. If it’s moving the needle then consider something more invasive.
Good morning. It should be clear, however, what the difference is between fertilizers and amendments. Somehow in your videos these two aspects are mixed. It is rather a mess of the soil here than a science. Are you usually high?
