      Same here, I am looking at both the Rode Filmmaker and the Rode Newsshooter kits, but the Newsshooter is, as far I look at it, a Rode Newsshooter with the ability to use XLR microphones as well (although at a higher price). But for interview types of filmmaking the XLR unit is by far more versatile when you have 2 people getting interviewed since you use a wireless microphone.

      Biju, the preamp in the Rode receiver is of very high quality. Adding extra components into the audio signal chain will only deteriorate the sound even though the extra preamp is of high quality. Please give the Rode unit a go directly connected to your camera. You may have to adjust the gains a little but I have found that you can get a good balance and lower the noise floor (hiss) considerably. Hope you have some success. I’m a bit jealous of the gear you have got. Nice.

      It is a general rule that you should not operate high frequency units close together. 3m is a common minimum distance though I commonly use these units 1 to 2 meters apart. The red indicator also indicates overdriving of the transmitter preamp. Not sure that that is your problem.

    Nice review Gary! I have found over time that recording audio to a DSLR camera can actually have a surprisingly low practical noise floor. My hypothesis is because most cameras record audio at 16 bit, most of the lower amplitude energy gets pushed down due to the smaller encoding bit depth. It seems to bear out here as well (seemingly lower noise on the camera recordings). Again, good work!

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Curtis Judd Audio Wow- I had to read that a few times. I appreciate you mentioning that cause I don't fully understand how bit rates impact on frequency. Very kind of you to have a look at the video too. I am beginning to realise how much time good product entails.

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure what that would be No Cap. It normally is very quiet. I would try a different mic plugged in or even a lav mic to see if is definitely the transmitter.
      Also raise the gain if your receiver so it sends a higher level to your camera.
      Cameras unusually have noisy inputs.

    Hi thanks for this video. I've only been able to get this used. So I'm considering one on the used market. I found one where the rotating collar was removed ( to fit a particular mic ) and misplaced. Is it that the locking mechanism is spring loaded the and collar is just there to push down the locking mechanism and either hold it in the unlocked (Depressed) position or release it so that it raises up ( under spring tension) to lock the mic in place? The reason I ask is that does it also serve as a way to stabilise the mic on to the Tx-Xlr so that there is no wobble? or is that handled by the O-Rings. I'm trying to determine if I can get by fairly reliably without the rotating collar. I have not handled an actual device but I'm hoping that I will only have to depress the lock by hand and not that the collar helps with mechanical connection stability. Any input will be helpful. Thanks in advance

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the collar is just to secure and stabilize the connection. The XLR plug has its own clip the hold it in place. You have to depress the clip to remove the mic. Hope that helps.

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not good practice to connect dynamic mics to +48v phantom powered inputs. Most modern microphones have protection against this but not all. In saying that many audio mixers don’t have any option to be selective in which inputs to feed +48v to. Either on or off to all. Hope that helps.

      Please note Annie that on the top of the Newsshooter transmitter there is an input for a plug in powered mic like the MKE. Too make it operate you have to select plug-in power in the menu options.

    Can you advise if sound quality difference would be noticed if we recorded sound into a field mixer/recorder at 24bit vs 16bit that is in camera. I have sony a7r3 which saves 48khz 16bit. I also have atomos ninja v which saves i beleive 48khz 24bit.

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I most cases recording on a separate recorder will be best. If your videos are for TH-cam etc you can't beat the simplicity of recording sound to camera. All professional production will record separately and just use in camera audio to assist in synchronising audio in editing.

      @@GaryDmedia from your experience. Best result for this type of yt video would come from lavalier or from shotgun mic? Newshooter with lavalier such as rode smartlav or newshooter with ntg4+

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question Ivan. The determining factor would be how good your acoustics are in the room your recording in and how close you can get the mic. My first choice in most cases would be the lav mic. It can be setup close to your mouth. Within 300mm or 12inches. To get a shotgun mic that close it would most times be in shot. Also shotgun Mic's don't would as well as they should inside with reflections of sound off the walls. It upsets its ability to reject sound from the sides and back. In a dead room like a studio a shotgun mic might be more convenient to use.

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the 3.5mm input is compatible with all microphones that need plug in power. You can turn it on or off from what I remember. The Aputure A Lav Mic I think has its own power by means of a battery which makes it a very versatile microphone. Even so, the cheapest lav mics will work because the unit can supply plugin power when needed. Hope that clears it up.

      +Norbert Kleiner Thanks for your comment and feedback on the lav mic. I will check it out for myself but I'm not supposed about the interference. The lead is very thin on the lav mic and anything wifi is electrically noisy.

      Hi Norbert - you have to buy a lav that is specially shielded for use with digital transmitters. I got an AVX and tried using my old analog mke2 gold lav mike and had the same interference issue you are describing. I bought a Sanken COS11D PT (where D is for digital) and it works fine on the AVX digital transmitter so should be ok with the RODE too. Hope this helps.

      Hi BanThe BBCHD - thank´s for the solution of the riddle. I tried to avoid purchasing another Lav again for the Rode Transmitter, cause I own already several Lav´s from Sennheiser. A Lav from Audio Development is now working nearly 100% correctly.
      But I think I would need a backup digital Lav in case of destruction and keep in eye that you recommended the Sanken Digital Lav.
      There is still a precise instruction manual (also in German Language) missing. My distributor is actually trying to receive more informations besides the quick manual.
      Let´s keep us updtated in case that there would be some news about this Rode-Kit in Future.
      Best regards
      Norbert

      Yes definitely. You can vary the input down to 0dB and up to +40dB in +10dB steps.

      1. How can I combine then as single input to Camera (Nikon D5100)
      2. What camera do you use for video production
      3. Are you single shooter or you have camera man

    great video, It's the jack to XLR included? or should buy one?
    In the future can I use 2 wireless systems together? Or paired with other receiver? multichannel?

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the question. The transmitter has both an XLR input and a 3.5 mm mini jack on the top of the unit. No need to buy an XLR to mini jack adapter. No you are not able to receive two transmitters into one receiver. One transmitter to one receiver on a different channel. Hope that helps.

      yes It help a lot. Right now I'm very convinced with the rode. Also can I use the rode for a Instrument Mic (super-cardioid) With preamp. 48v To a soundmixer?

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the mic has 48volt supply for condenser mics. If you want to plug in the receiver to an audio mixer you will need a 3.5 mm to XLR adapter. Please check out the Rode website. They have a receiver that is designed for sound systems. Just something to consider.

    Hey Gary, i am wondering if it’s better to plug this Newsshooter to the Zoom H5 then to the Camera than when you plug the Newsshooter directly to the camera. Ps
    Ps: my camera is sony a6500

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends what your hoping to do. The best quality audio recording would be into the Zoom recorder as that's what it is designed to do. If your just doing talking head videos, direct to camera would be simpler and for most listeners would be no different. Just depends on your production and if you need the high quality audio tracks to work with in post. Hope that helps.

      Gary Davies Thank you for answering! Yeah i am doing alot of ENG style videos. Since i am the only person who is responsible for the camera stuff (my friend will be the presenter), i would love to be able to monitor the audio from the Zoom H5 since it has headphone jack. Well then i guess i will have to attach the Newsshooter to the H5 then the camera. Thanks Gary!

    Hi Gary. Great review. Im deciding between the Folmmaker Kit and this Newsshooter kit. I will be using it for lavalier setup. I already have the Røde Lavalier Mic with the XLR adaptor.
    Q: When you tested input to the Canon 80D, did you add gain to the reciever and lower the preamp on the camera to get this low noise result ? What was your settings for this ?

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes lowered the input gain on the 80D to one stop above off. The transmitter mic input gain was lifted to +20 and the receiver gain -10. Depending on the volume of your voice you may need to tweak the 80D's input up a bit. Hope that helps. It's a bit hard to know your exact needs but that should give you a start.

      Great. Ive struggled a lot to get better audio on simple recordings. Useed the Zoom H4 as well, but find it 'too much' for simple stuff. And a direct mic input to the Canon 80d is just horrible. I will try the newsshooter kit.

      I had that problem on my first video job. That night I had to resort to using electrical tape to tape on my small Sony Chap Stick size ACM AW3 Sony Bluetooth microphone to my Sennheiser (that's okay, you can laugh!). The following Monday morning, I consulted with Rode's tech guy in San Diego. It temporarily stumped him, but he finally had me try pushing the red button INSIDE the Rode receiver. Viola! That worked. I want all new buyers of the Rode TX-XLR transmitters to this fact! I also think Rode has a lot of work to do to make the TX-XLR a lot SIMPLER with their too complex controls and they should add their 100 hour, rechargeable battery to that transmitter. Then it will be a classic A+ design. And after I used it a couple of times, then the transmitter linked up automatically on Channel 8 with my previously bought, three year old Rode FilmMaker receiver.

    Hi Gary, thanks for sharing another great tutorial. Have you tried it with an iPhone. I wonder if it will work if you add a Rode SC7 cable to the receiver and plug it into the iphone? Any thoughts? Thank you.

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alvaro Andoin (Filmatu) Mobile phones are unpredictable when you plug in audio devices using basic adaptor leads. The phone has to identify if there is a headset (4pin) or earphone (3pin) attached. If the phone detects earphones only it will switch to the onboard mic for an input signal. The trick is to convince the phone an audio device like a receiver is attached. A special lead has to be used to reliably do this. The lead not only has a resister to simulate a mic but also a resister pad to reduce input level if needed. There is no reason the RODE receiver wouldn't work with the SC7 lead, it is a question of reliability. Hope that helps a little.

    Hi Gary thanks for the great vid/tutorial. I am a stills photog and need this kind of set-up to do the occasional interview. - I just received the kit and loved it - for the first day. The transmitter stopped functioning the second day. I have a Senneheiser MKE-400, a little shotgun mic that can go on top of a camera (it's probably around 10 years old but works perfectly). It runs on one AAA battery. I was getting familiarized with the RODE Kit and plugged the MKE 400 into the RODE transmitter and was getting great sound. I went back to the kit the second day and the transmitter 'started up' and paired with the receiver but then shut down (this with fresh, strong batteries) after about ten seconds. Then, after repeated attempts, the transmitter would not turn on (always using strong batteries. Can you see where the shotgun mic could have caused any problems? It was plugged in (it fit fine but had no tightening collar) and turned on (powered by the one AAA) and was working beautifully with the receiver. I did/do like the product, but am so disappointed that is shut down like this so quickly. Thanks for any help/thoughts/advice

      I’m very sorry to here you are having problems with the Rode gear. Would you please confirm which Rode transmitter you are having a problem with? Is it the NewsShooter transmitter?

    • @jkenney17
      @jkenney17 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GaryDmedia thanks for the reply Gary-It is the NewsShooter transmitter; the same one that is in your video above.

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand. That is unusual for the transmitter to stop working after a little while. The Sennheiser mic would not be at fault. If anything, it may overdrive the input if not setup correctly, but that in no way would break the transmitter.
      More than likely, it needs repair. Before you do anything I would contact Rode via their support page. They are very good at customer relations. I really hope you can get it sorted quickly.
