I always preferred the ORIGINAL Dr. Weir {Jessica Steen} and wished she had continued to play the character and was convinced SGA would've been better with her. There were a number of aspects of the "other" Weir that I was just never a fan of and I was always sure that Steen would've been better. It' good to finally learn what really happened (from her perspective-which I think is very well-balanced and fair), although it's also upsetting because I kind of hoped that THEY (the producers and decision makers responsible) were "better" than that... It is disappointing the learn that she was treated in that way. I just wish it could've different. I very much appreciate hearing this story after all my years of wondering what happened and not understanding why Steen was "scrapped" because Steen's Weir was just so good and powerful (and likable/relatable). THANK YOU so much for bringing this to us David!
I agree I think she could have carried that lead. Torri is fine but I think she was just miscast for that role completely. Bringing back Bo Bridges would have even been better or just Picardo from the start. The writing for the episodes clearly suffered from not having a actor that could carry a script from the home command, Atlantis.
Her replacement was much better cast. Steen never felt like she fit in and would not have worked for the dynamic of Atlantis. That was pretty obvious from the start.
Thank you Jessica for completing the puzzle for all of us. You did such a fantastic job as Dr. Weir, a lot of us didn't understand why you didn't go forward. I have a good friend that lives for Burning Man. She creates all her elaborate customs from scratch and it's a sight to see.
Thank you so much for doing this interview. I loved Jessica as Dr Elizabeth Weir, she was great and I wish we had more of her. Edit: Just finished watching. Thank you to Jessica for being willing to share her part of the story, and I'm so glad she's willing to potentially be a part of a future Stargate project.

Thanks for great interview. Jessica is full of energy when you see how passionately she talks. She reminded me to Andee Frizzell. Earth 2 is a mandatory scifi show from 1994. It is strongly suggested, gaters.
Thank you David and Jessica. I realize I'm 2 years late in watching this and a lot of "old water has gone under an old bridge" in the interim. A quick backstory, when SG1 started I was doing shift work in my long time job that I ultimately retired from a few years ago and had little time for TV with long work hours and being a husband and dad and not getting caught up in the cable and eventual satellite TV debacles. All we had was broadcast TV and still do in our rural area of Southern Colorado. Late night TV was SciFi and it was Star Trek whatever they were broadcasting at that time. So it wasn't until the last few years that I discovered SG1 though I knew of it's existence. My youngest son was heavy into Star Gate and eventually Universe and Atlantis. He had gotten the SG1 10 season DVD set and loaned it to me and I got hooked. Been a few times through it now and love it as an almost daily "fix". Just went through the traumatic episode of the death of Teryl Rothery's character Dr. Frasier and then began the two part Lost City. Loved Jessica as Dr. Weir the first couple times and watching it again last night I still said that Jessica firmly established the personality of Dr. Weir and we rejoiced when she put the evil Vice President in his place in effect telling him she's in charge and to go eff himself. Loved it! And as in previous times through the seasons, when Tori Higginson took over in Season 8 it was a total disruption of the continuity that Jessica established for Dr. Weir. I always knew that something happened behind the scenes that caused Jessica to be replaced. I had previously and again went to IMDB.com to look up Jessica but not a clue of any reference to SG1. I searched today for her fan site and found the reference to this interview and saw what I (no doubt many) suspected happened. It was the producers that dropped her because of their total misperception of what she was doing on the break she requested. Instead of asking for a dialogue with her they dumped her and as much as I respect Tori Higginson, it wasn't the same persona for Dr. Weir but I'm thankful to have found your interview with her and of course, the "what ifs" are abundant but now totally moot what she might have been able to do with Dr. Weir had she been allowed to continue as the character in Season 8. Again, a much belated thank you for the interview that cleared up a lot of "disdain" for the sudden "whipsaw" change from "one disk to another" in that character's story arc (and I'm seeing from reading the comments after the interview aired that I'm "among friends" who also felt Jessica established the persona of the quick-learner and feisty-kick-ass Dr. Weir)!. 🙂👍
I'm very happy to see her attitude and the way she handled the situation. She definitely got the raw deal and it gives some insights as to how the industry works / views personal life and commitments. I'm also really happy to see how her career has gone. Looks like this hiccup didn't adversely impact her and no doubt was a learning moment (even for the rest of us, having seen what happened). That aside, I really did enjoy her portrayal of the character. I love how she was soooo green and yet finding her own way (I loved the moments when she had to defend herself and her choices. Very compelling!). It would have been interesting to see her character played out on Atlantis.
Stargate really is chicken soup for me and I heard the same from some of my friends. Even when the topic is a bit heavy, the episodes always radiated a type of wholesome charm, comraderie, humor, heroism, bravery, and most importantly: hope. SG1 and Atlantis made me feel better during some really hard struggles of my life, and for that I am forever thankful for all of you guys involved in this work!
Love her!! Wish they would have kept her on as Weir, but Torri killed it as well. Jessica killed it in the few episodes on SG-1 that she had. She set a fire for the character, and Torri carried that torch forward. Sadly, where I live, Amarillo, TX, finding Canadian programming is hard on local cable providers, however I have recently "Cut the Cord" and with streaming, I have found her again in Heartland. Just started the show, so I haven't formed an opinion just yet, but I can't wait to watch more... I Miss Jessica and I miss SG-1 and the whole SG network. Magical time that MGM killed prematurely. I'm extremely happy about the talks for a new show that are going on now.. I can't wait for what is to come. This is the first interview with Jessica that I have seen. She said early on that she's just the In the moment type actor, and just plays herself like she's in that moment, and in this interview, I can totally see that. I saw Weir come out over and over. I love actors that can just be themselves and still get the job done and done well. The part she played in SG-1 was short, but it was her, living the script. I love the ones that can just do it. I felt these moments. Dr. Daniel Jackson : I remember when we were first trying to get the Stargate to work, I would come here and just stare at it for hours. Dr. Elizabeth Weir : Is that a-a gentle reminder that you've been an important part of this since the very beginning? Dr. Daniel Jackson : Subtle, huh? I imagine she wasn't lying about being up all weekend reading... Just getting up to speed.. lol Dr. Elizabeth Weir : I've been awake all weekend. I-I... The reality of this is-is-is... It's an adrenaline rush. Dr. Daniel Jackson : Hey, at least I know you have a beating heart!
That was great! I'm glad we heard Jessica' s side of the story. I still think that there was a lot more going on - it was the launch of a new series and all the bureaucracy that goes with it. Maybe one of the suits wanted her gone and her Burning Man stuff gave them a convenient excuse? What I'll never understand is why didn't they just give us a NEW character. There really was no need to stick with "Elizabeth Weir". A passing line about some really big peace treaty would have put away Jessica's Elizabeth being that woman that ran the SGC for a couple of weeks once, and then a minute to introduce us to Tori's "not Elizabeth Weir". We would have gotten to know her just like all the other characters. Instead of knowing Weir and Rodney - we'd have only known Rodney. The opportunity to give her a whole new back story that fit Tori's style. Imagine even, a few more years down the line, and Jessica's Weir could have come back. I'm sure the fandom rumor mill would still be gossiping about the cast change - but not like the running rift over which Weir is best.
I grew to like Tori as Weir but the first season of Atlantis was a tough pill for me to swallow because I really liked Jessica in the role. She played the transition from being distrustful of the military to realizing her role as a pawn in a powerplay game to taking control of her agency and fulfilling the role as SHE thought it should play out masterfully. It was fun watching her put all the puzzle pieces together.

Oh wow, it's been so long since I've seen Earth II. It was great. Now I need to rewatch. I remember the DVD's were a very weird format. I hardly got to watch it when it originally aired on TV, dang scheduling. :) Great to get the reminder. (I wish the show had been completed.)
Finally getting the answer to the question of Weir’s recasting. Last year I binged watched all of SG-1 and remembered how weird it seemed back in the day that was she went from blonde to brunette.
i liked her a lot for stargate , i wondered too why she did not continue, Also when looking at her career , i remembered her from earth2 too. will definitely look at heartland too now.
Thanks. I remember Jessica from Earth 2 where she was my favorite character. As to why she was let go ... I'm not surprised. The thing with people making decisions about who comes and who goes is that it is their job to make money and to not lose it. With the general reputation that Burning Man had - people getting naked and doing drugs in the desert - for her to be that involved in something like that - made them uncomfortable. If she had been a minor character - they might not have cared - but for her to be one of the major characters and be involved with something they just didn't understand - made them uncomfortable and they let her go. .
Great interview, for me the Stargate Producers didn't know what to do with the character of Dr Weir. Both of the great actresses were treated badly by some of the producers on Stargate
Thank you so much Jessica. I have to say to all that say Tori was better in Atlantis, was Jessica given the same script, who's to say she wouldn't have had chemistry as well. I have seen Jessica play several different roles and she is very good.
Jessica has great vibe! I loved her as Dr. Weir, I must admit I could not connet with Tory as Dr. Weir.... Cheers from Czech republic! Keep up the great work! :)
Huh, I always assumed that when SG-1 got renewed, the producers felt Jessica Steen looked a little too much like Amanda Tapping. Didn't even consider that it was an offstage misunderstanding.
Y'know, I'm generally pretty conservative, but I also have a rebel side, I guess. I've heard various stuff about Burning Man, but never was into it to know about it. But OK, and actors do what they do, performance art. It's aggravating in a way to hear that people made assumptions and rushed decisions, and she wasn't informed or asked or included in the process. But I guess that's how things work in the business. Well, maybe it gave her other opportunities. I am doing a rewatch and I haven't gotten to her performance yet. I remember Torri Higginson as Weir. -- I wonder if Jessiaca Steen will get a chance to audition and do a part in the potential fourth Stargate series, as a recurring or regular character. In any case, it's good to know more and to know she went on to other great roles. Life is weird, and sometimes there are bumps in the road and mistakes when people should have done better, meaning the situation should have been handled better from the hiring / production / casting side. People aren't perfect. Good to get an interview and hear from her. And hey, it's been years now, bygones are bygones. There might be more chances coming up. She's proven she can handle good science fiction roles.
I'm of the opinion that Elizabeth would have been better as a recurring SG1 character. I love her in "New Order" where she's operating both in a leadership and diplomatic role. I think Atlantis put her at odds with the military too much, who would just ignore her. If she'd just been recurring then the stories would be written more for the character, rather than because then need to give the actress something to do. I love Torri, especially in scenes with Sheppard, and I think she did the best she could do. I think if Jessica had got the role she would probably have still had similar stories to Torri and still got written out.
I became a fan of Jessica back when she was on Homefront, so watching Heartland was always going to be something I’d be drawn to, however there’s one thing about Heartland that stands out for me above everything else, and that’s the complete lack of God and faith from an entire town, the entire series. It’s something that is blatantly obvious to every Christian viewer because every town, city and suburb in reality has at least one active church.

It was interesting to hear her story, but really glad that Torri Higginson played Dr. Weir. She was so much better in the role. I don't think Atlantis would have been as good if Jessica played Weir instead of Elizabeth. Would love to see an interview with Torri to see how she felt about taking over the role from Jessica.
1h10' -> David: 'do you want to come back ?' . Her face seems to be thinking: 'Seriously ? Why don't you talk to me like adults ... and contact my agent instead... ?' Her answer: 'yeah of course I'll be happy to join but a different charcter then'
I'm glad this explained finally what happened. A bit of a shame to learn basically they were overwhelmed by her dedication, but maybe in the end this was for the better.
Tori seems to have been somewhat checked out in the role. I really like her and think a different role with more to do would have been great. She probably liked her return episodes more because she had something to work with. I also think Steen’s personality would have driven more storylines for the character. It might have led to more contentious political episodes with Senators or something, which weren’t my favorite to watch but great stories nonetheless. Loved her as Cassidy too.
Jessica's Weir is the down-in-the-trenches diplomat, who you could buy being in a war zone, perhaps someone better equipped to handle the Genii(?). Torri's Weir is the politician diplomat, I sort of call her interpretation, with all respect intended, as the C.J. Cregg (of West Wing, who is one of my favorite characters in said series) of outer space.
I was a huge fan of Stargate SG1. I watched after Richard Dean left, however, it just wasn't the same show for me. And I REALLY wasn't happy when Jessica didn't come back to play Dr. Elizabeth Weir. I never got into Atlantis because of that. Yes, Tory was fine, but I just didn't even buy it when she told O'Neill that he was being promoted and taking over the full command.
A lot of people here swear by Higginson, she wasn’t my Elizabeth Weir. Jessica steen had the exact same energy I wanted in Atlantis, and her feminine energy was both refreshing in a male dominated space, where Carter and Higginson had their female personalities neutered to more male oriented characteristics. Having a strong feminine personality, that wasn’t afraid to be soft where necessary, as opposed to Higginson portraying Weir as a stubborn, obstinate, testosterone driven character more concerned with turf wars than bureaucracy and negotiation would have done to Atlantis what Claudia Black did for SG1. Although the two characters portrayed two different variations of female energy, Claudia Black and Jessica Steen, both were written to be women in extraordinary situations. 100% would prefer Steen.
I really enjoyed Jessica‘s performance on SG1! But, I kind of agreed with her that she seemed a little bit too young to have been so accomplished as Dr Weir. Also,I thought she was too hot. I thought it would be impossible for her, and John Sheppard, not to have a relationship. Then there would be no possibilities of him playing Captain Kirk! To me, Tori Higginson seemed older, more matronly, and less of a romantic option for John. Now I find that Tori is actually the youngest of the three and Jessica is the oldest! Lol what the hell do I know!?
I can see why she would be annoying to producers. I'd bet the producers saw the potential for behind the season problems down the road and factored that into the decision.
Dr. Weir is in a frozen replicator lost in space last we seen her... maybe they could bring her back if Torri can't and handwave it as a new replicator body.
I thank stargate atlantis Would have been so much better with Jessica Steen playing Dr. Weir So much so I believe the series would have had more then just 5 seasons . Oh wow, it's been so long since I've seen Earth II. It was great. Now I need to rewatch. I remember the DVD's were a very weird format. I hardly got to watch it when it originally aired on TV, dang scheduling. :) Great to get the reminder. (I wish the show had been completed.)
Dang, I might not have the DVD's anymore, and it's high priced for new ones. I'll keep looking.
@@benw9949 *Like so many more.*
it's have been even longer since Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future
Loved her character on NCIS and hated to see her character die.
Finally getting the answer to the question of Weir’s recasting.
Last year I binged watched all of SG-1 and remembered how weird it seemed back in the day that was she went from blonde to brunette.
*That’s what I thought to Paul Kamau.*
i liked her a lot for stargate , i wondered too why she did not continue, Also when looking at her career , i remembered her from earth2 too. will definitely look at heartland too now.
If she had been a minor character - they might not have cared - but for her to be one of the major characters and be involved with something they just didn't understand - made them uncomfortable and they let her go.
.
She is an excellent actress, I admire her, I will continue to enjoy her work.
Jessica is so incredible! She seems so real and down to earth! I am amazed by her! I love her in every role/ character I see her in!
What an amazing office ! I was stearin at it for a good minute, counting all the relics :)
David, thank you for demonstrating journalistic integrity in an age filled with leaks and spoilers. 👌
I love this interview with Jessica Steen
Huh, I always assumed that when SG-1 got renewed, the producers felt Jessica Steen looked a little too much like Amanda Tapping. Didn't even consider that it was an offstage misunderstanding.
I to have quit and been fired for a music festival… You rock Jessica! #noregrets
This was a great interview and getting her side of the story was cool. I would have never taken her as a Burner!!
What a delightful lady! And she was a terrific Dr. Weir as well!!
Wow, she’s still beautiful and still better as Dr. Weir. Just wish she could’ve played that character full time.
*Hahaahaa yes she is still a beautiful Lady so I have to agree with you on that **#JarrodM** but who knows how **#Atlantis** would have worked out.*
We asked her if she would be interested in auditioning for the fourth one and she said she would be down. :)
@@DialtheGate *That would be **#Great** **#David_Read** if she could/would if there is another **#Stargate_Series** hopefully.* 😍
What, no comment or question concerning EARTH 2???
Who else is watching Lost City tonight?
I'm of the opinion that Elizabeth would have been better as a recurring SG1 character. I love her in "New Order" where she's operating both in a leadership and diplomatic role. I think Atlantis put her at odds with the military too much, who would just ignore her. If she'd just been recurring then the stories would be written more for the character, rather than because then need to give the actress something to do. I love Torri, especially in scenes with Sheppard, and I think she did the best she could do. I think if Jessica had got the role she would probably have still had similar stories to Torri and still got written out.
I live in the town where they film some of Heartland. My macaw and ivwalk by Maggie's dinner almost daily
Incrivelmente libra, talentosa, uma atriz de primeira classe, além de linda, elegante, charmosa e versátil fazendo com perfeição todos os personagens que lhes são apresentado ❤🏆👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🌷
She was good in the role she had, and was/is attractive.

Strong disagree, I think the best seasons of Stargate are without Higgenson, for a reason.
*We’ll never know now.*
To this one I have looked forward very much, she was great in the SG
Remarkable actress and person, impossible to typecast as she's so versatile.
Oh! David, are you moving???
1h10' -> David: 'do you want to come back ?' . Her face seems to be thinking: 'Seriously ? Why don't you talk to me like adults ... and contact my agent instead... ?' Her answer: 'yeah of course I'll be happy to join but a different charcter then'
Great actress 💐
I'm glad this explained finally what happened. A bit of a shame to learn basically they were overwhelmed by her dedication, but maybe in the end this was for the better.
I liked Tori but they should have had Jessica back for Atlantis.
Amo vc Jessica

Tori seems to have been somewhat checked out in the role. I really like her and think a different role with more to do would have been great. She probably liked her return episodes more because she had something to work with.
I also think Steen’s personality would have driven more storylines for the character. It might have led to more contentious political episodes with Senators or something, which weren’t my favorite to watch but great stories nonetheless. Loved her as Cassidy too.
OMG she has not aged at all.. so beautyful
I love her in other shows as well and loved her as dr.weirr was disappointed that she wasn't Dr weir in stargate atlas
Shawn and Jessica is my favorite couple as Jack and Lisa
I was a huge fan of Stargate SG1. I watched after Richard Dean left, however, it just wasn't the same show for me. And I REALLY wasn't happy when Jessica didn't come back to play Dr. Elizabeth Weir. I never got into Atlantis because of that. Yes, Tory was fine, but I just didn't even buy it when she told O'Neill that he was being promoted and taking over the full command.
I love ❤️ Heartland
Her character said she spoke 7 languages
I’ll bet your lunch!

Lol what the hell do I know!?
they're grey, actually. :D
Better to not confuse the non-initiated ;-)
@@DialtheGate *#Lol* 😆😂🤣🤣🤣
After crip I wouldn't play stargate either if they crip
I can see why she would be annoying to producers. I'd bet the producers saw the potential for behind the season problems down the road and factored that into the decision.
Dr. Weir is in a frozen replicator lost in space last we seen her... maybe they could bring her back if Torri can't and handwave it as a new replicator body.
Last time we saw Weir, she was played by Michelle Morgan who is Jessica Steen’s step-granddaughter in Heartland!
Making comments also affect the algorithms
Earth 2
...and Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future :-)
I thank stargate atlantis Would have been so much better with Jessica Steen playing Dr. Weir So much so
I believe the series would have had more then just 5 seasons .
Im sorry if i upset or down rite piss off some Stargate Fans but Torri Higginson screwed up the series from the start she is not a great actress not next to Jessica Steen
Not even close . Agine I am sorry if i have upset anyone BUT some times the truth HURTS
