    I think the fake old makeup is because he doesn't actually know how those ppl would look like when they're older but he's imagining it to the best of his abilities.

    Another thing I noticed is that Jake seems to have a superiority complex. Especially during the dinner scene. Always correcting everyone and getting frustrated when they don't understand. Maybe he feels like he is so much smarter than the people around him, but in reality he never got to do anything with that intelligence or he is overestimating how smart he is. I have seen a lot of people also interpret the movie as Jake having a mental illness. It's been a couple days since I've seen this film and I am still talking and thinking about it. That is what amazing movies do.

      Theory that the janitor was suffering from rabies and this heightened sense of smell was a symptom. Along with the arm rash and the tinnitus and loss of sleep and delusional thoughts.

    Do you guys notice each time Lucy is about to say "I'm thinking of ending things" out loud to Jake instead of internally, he goes "ta da!" or "here we are!" and he says his parents are coming down the stairs, or the Tulsey Town appears, or the high school suddenly pops up. Movie is a fucking trip, man. Straight up loved it.

      I noticed that too! As if he couldn't bear to actually *hear* her say the words (because then he'd be forced to face it), so instead, he interrupted her before she could complete the thought.

      @spooki6637 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      YES. I had the same thoughts literally yesterday. I think Jake was actually trying to stall time and steer his thoughts away from suicide. cuz after his girlfriend goes home, she's gonna break up with him, which means that jake the janitor is gonna killing himself

  • @Dani-rz8dj

    I don’t think he was necessarily a mediocre man. I think he projected that self image because he was extremely depressed and suicidal. Her calling him creepy is still his own projection. All signs of negative harmful thoughts we all have sometimes.
    He had a knack for movies and books, all he wanted was someone to talk to and share a life with.

    I picked up a lot of this on my second viewing. Personally, the prospect of waking up one day realizing you're a high school janitor with nothing original to offer fucking terrifies me. Seriously, I've had almost this exact worst-case scenario in my mind before. So once it all clicked, this became one of the scariest and most resonant movies I've ever seen.

    Another key reference is Woodsworth's "Ode to Immortality..." giving that is basically an Ode to childhood (romantic poets like Woodsworth thought of childhood as a superior mind state than adulthood) and to the immortality of the poet, who the romantics thought as someone with innate talent that never loosed that connection with God children have and loose when growing up.

    I'm also wanna bring that..
    The two person on the car was the symbolism of one person spliting his inner self, Jake is inner conscious of himself try to recollect all of his memories try to bring the good things they might found, so he took on a road trip visiting 3 destination (his parent affection,his favourite childhood food, and finally his job) and young woman represent a self that except the reality, she know the trip is useless, and she's wanna ending this memory every way possible, by asking Jake multiple times to leave and go back to town, (everytime she try to think about ending things, Jake immedietly cut her)
    But at the end, the Jake person didn't find any good on his memories, so he begin to not hear the young woman self of himself, and he decide to ending things

    Yes! This is great thanks! I would add as well that the hypothermia is depicted in the fact that he strips then hallucinates. When one dies from hypothermia it is reported that they will start to feel extremely hot and claustrophobic. usually they will take their clothes off, as well as say irrelevant things, and converse with people who are not there.

    i was entertained throughout the movie though i can understand why some hate it. i caught on to some themes while watching but not fully, i tried to just go along for the ride and figure it out more later which i'd recommend for everyone bc i would've been too stressed trying to understand it clearly throughout. and the themes of feeling unoriginal hit close to home- i always feel like i'm just repeating stuff i read online because i can't come up with better thoughts myself. some very interesting ideas used i don't really see enough. i'm still a bit confused and it was admittedly sooorta pretentious but i think it's gonna sit with me for a good while. and thanks for this analysis!! needed it

    Wow... The moment at the table where the illusion breaks... Good point! I just got that!
    I don't think that Jake is presented as mediocre in the film. I think he's supposed to have been a relatively gifted child and that it's his inability to connect with people/social dysfunction that led to all these wasted potential and life of regret.

  • @cedriccinema4822

    I too focused too much on Jessie Buckley. She’s a great character, but once you realize that we are traveling through the subconscious of Jake then things start to make more sense. You really have to examine every part of jakes life his house, parents, hobbies, etc. All of these things aren’t as literal or easy to find. I also like how you brought up that he’s not an original person with a lot of original ideas. A lot of the dialogue that is said by Buckley and Jake especially feels contrived not like they pondered it off as free thought.

    Finally got around to watching this film, and immediately knew that I want to watch your analysis on it! You two provided some really insightful commentary that makes we want to go back and rewatch this film (which I liked but didn't initially love).
    One tidbit I'll add is the importance of which song from "Oklahoma!" that Jake sings at the end. It's called "Lonely Room" and is sung by the antagonist of the show (Jud) who is an isolated, brooding ne'er-do-well. The song comes right after the handsome, well-liked protagonist (Curly) tells Jud that people would realize how much they care about & appreciate him if he just killed himself. Seems like a pretty clear reflection of Jake's mental state and decision-making in the films closing minutes.

  • @AppleBottomMC24

    Great interpretation of the movie one small thing that I wanted to add was that at the end scene when the janitor is in the car I think he makes the decision not to continue or “end things” by turning off the engine.
    Because he turned off the car engine he started to experience extreme hypothermia, which causes the brain to be in a encephalopathic or confused and disoriented State. The brain then feels as though it is fact burning up or extremely hot ( rather than cold) and so that is why he is removing his clothes.

    Something that I kept me thinking is that Jake corrects two times Jessie Buckley about stuff she said about homosexuality. Maybe he had cuestioned himself about his sexuality, or maybe that could mean the way he thinks his parents saw him for not having girls in his life. I remember that in some point in the house their parents are talking or something and the father says he thought Jake was gay.

  • @LongdogBookReviews
    @LongdogBookReviews 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The cause of Jake's feelings of loneliness and inadequacy was different in the book (where an underlying mental illness was heavily implied); whereas in the movie, it was a growing self-hatred that started in childhood, like you said. Great analysis!

    Do you think it has any Oscar potential? I don’t think it’ll be a contender in any category except cinematography. Depends if Netflix campaigns it, obviously, but the cinematographer has been nominated before and it is an exceptionally good looking film. Might be a Lighthouse type film that only gets one nomination in cinematography. Cause let’s face it, even though it’s an amazing film, it’s too inaccessible for any Oscar love... even though it deserves it.

    As a medical professional, I immediately began seeing this movie as the perspective from the janitor’s imagination... in the event that he was suffering from rabies as a result of the pig. Knowing the signs and symptoms of rabies that occur and the timeline of these events happening was very key in this. You’ll pick up throughout the entire film the various signs “they” (the janitor) are/is experiencing (i.e. tinnitus, delusion, hysteria, loss of sleep, heightened senses such as taste, etc etc). I’ve looked anywhere I could to see if anyone else had this interpretation from the film and would love to find others that see this as the underlying plot as well. It becomes more of a film of a person suffering from rabies without treatment and how you’re essentially doomed without vaccination, but mixed with a suicide trope.

    • @natalieelizabeth9052
      @natalieelizabeth9052 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excelent analysis. I wrote what I thought about the movie, then I realized I was just repeating everything you both said with my own words, which is basically what ITOET says we do.
    But I do disagree that "the film seems to be an admission that theres'no originality in the first place". I mean, we consume art, recycle and reuse it with our own perspective. I believe Charlie makes his point in Adaptation when he says "You are what you love, not what loves you." He tries to adapt a book about flowers, staying true to himself, only to give in in the second half, using the hollywood conventions to write a great ending. So even if you're not 100% original, there's still a significant part of you in the work that you produce.
