My top album is one that "crept" up to the top over the years - it was among the top ten way back then but its real strength just had to grow as I grew... Killer year. albums I wanted to make the cut but didn't - Ege Bamyasi - Can, Roxy Music - Roxy Music, Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull and You Don't Mess Around With Jim - Jim Croce 5) Transformer - Lou Reed 4) Harvest - Neil Young The next three are so good they're virtually interchangeable. 3) Exile on Main Street - The Rolling Stones 2) Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - David Bowie 1) Vol. 4 - Black Sabbath
another absurdly good year. 24 albums in my top 500. Incredible year for progressive rock really coming of age, including some classic Italian prog, a whole string of singer songwriter classics (Nick Drake, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Randy Newman, Carly Simon, etc.), and much more. My top 5: 1. Exile on Main st. 2. Foxtrot - Genesis 3. Close to the edge - Yes 4. Talking Book 5. Chicago V
Possibly the most difficult year of the 70s for me to pick. We'll see. 5. Big Star - # 1 Record - Thanks to my favorite band of all time, The Replacements, for name-checking Alex Chilton. Classic power pop, influencing many bands to come. 4. Neil Young - Harvest - The oldest 20-something ever makes his best music. 3. Bowie - Rise and Fall... - Makes me jump into the air. 2. Stones - Exile On Main Street - Slippery and sleazy. 1. Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill - Their debut sounds like they knew what to do from day one. Still get a contact high from Do It Again. From beginning to end, a perfect record.
in 1972, I've got prog on the brain. 2 of my favs are definitive prog records. 1. Foxtrot - Genesis; I'm really into this record, two tracks in particular elevate this one for me-"Supper's Ready" and "Watcher of the Skies" 2. Ege Bamyasi - Can; my favorite record by them, despite the fact that Tago Mago is my #1 from 1971 3. Vol 4 - Black Sabbath; this is my go to Sabbath, I love every track (even "Changes")! 4. Close to the Edge - Yes; this album blew me away as a teenager, and it still works for me today 5. Bare Trees - Fleetwood Mac; this is the definitive album of my favorite lineup of the band. most fans hate me for preferring Kirwan and Welch to Buckingham and Nicks, but how can I not love "Dust"?
The 70's was the best era for quality recordings and here's my top 5 pick of 1972. 1. Blue Oyster Cult - Blue Oyster Cult. 2. Van Morrison - Saint Dominic's Preview. 3.Roxy Music - Roxy Music. 4. Wishbone Ash - Argus. 5. Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick. I have to say that I worship Marc Bolan, hearing Jeepster for the first time in late 1971 was the start of my love affair with rock music. I prefer Electric Warrior but The Slider is of course a masterpiece.
5- Allman Brothers --- Eat a Peach 4- Steely Dan --- Can't Buy a Thrill 3- Neil Young --- Harvest2- Rolling Stones --- Exile on Main Street 1- David Bowie --- The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
5. The Raspberries - The Raspberries: debut album of the highly influential Power-Pop band from Cleveland that introduced the world to Eric Carmen. "Go All the Way" is on here. 4. Something/Anything? - Todd Rundgren: EPIC two-album set, filled with great stuff. 3. Talking Book - Stevie Wonder: what is said in the video. So true. 2. In Search of Amelia Earhart - Plainsong: Iain Matthews & Andy Roberts (and band) deliver one of the best albums of the decade - once again, sadly underrated and overlooked. A Folk/Rock MASTERPIECE. 1. Willis Alan Ramsey - Willis Alan Ramsey: THE singer/songwriter album of the 70s. Literally in my Top 5 favorite albums of all-time. Dude was 19 when he made this, and never felt he could follow it up, despite many attempts. He's probably right, but we're left lesser because of it.
1. Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street 2. Neil Young - Harvest 3. Elton John - Honky Chateau 4. Deep Purple - Machine Wood 5. David Bowie - The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust Honorable Mention Allman Brothers Band - Eat a Peach Peter Frampton - Winds of Change Rod Stewart - Never a Dull Moment The Moody Blues - Seventh Sojourn Black Sabbath - Vol 4 Exile was on easy 1 for me. Favorite album from my favorite band (top 5 of all-time). Exile encompasses everything that they do well. From start to finish a masterpiece.
The lists are getting a lot more varied now which is good. For me- 5. Transformer by Lou Reed 4. Vol. 4 by Sabbath 3. Harvest by Neil Young 2. Machine Head by Deep Purple 1. The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars by Bowie A couple of great live albums from 1972 as well with Slade Alive by Slade and down here in Australia we got Live At Sunbury by Billy Thorpe. Love them both.
The albums I rate as 10 (brilliant) and 9 (excellent) are Saint Dominic's Preview10 Argus 10, Ziggy Stardust 10, Exile on Main Street 10, Close to the Edge 10, Foxtrot 9, Machine Head 9, Can't Buy A Thrill 9, Roxy Music 9, 1+1 9, Demons & Wizards 9, Thick as a Brick 9 The tens effectively make up my top 60 of studio albums over the years, so with five of them, 1972 rates as a terrific year.

Two things I Love: > the rich eclectic music in Joe's picks. Stevie and Sabbath. Both awesome picks. > Joe including the astonishing, timeless insanity genius of "Can't Buy A Thrill," one of the goats IMO One Thing I Don't Love: > Joe's lack of enthusiasm for David Palmer songs on CBAT. i love his songs on the record, especially "Brooklyn," a hugely underrated pop masterpiece.
1. "Talking Book" by Stevie Wonder 2. "Music Of My Mind" by Stevie Wonder 3. "The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars" by David Bowie 4. "Machine Head" by Deep Purple 5. "Volume 4" by Black Sabbath
Here are my picks for this year, another strong cycle in the single greatest decade for rock (my selections are listed in alphabetical order by title): --'Eagles' by the Eagles (solid debut by this soon-to-be canonical American band) --'Eat a Peach' by the Allman Brothers Band (landmark work from these pioneers of southern rock, featuring perhaps my two favorite songs of theirs, "Melissa" and "Blue Sky") --'Harvest' by Neil Young (Young's single finest LP, an enduring classic) --'Talking Book' by Stevie Wonder (fantastic album by one of the all-time greats of popular music) --'You Don't Mess Around with Jim' by Jim Croce (memorable and heartfelt effort from this talented artist)
5. Something/Anything? - Todd Rundgren 4. Straight Up - Badfinger 3. Obscured By Clouds - Pink Floyd (underrated AF!!!!!) 2. Exile On Main Street - Rolling Stones 1. Close To The Edge - Yes I agree with Jason that CTTE isn’t their best album (my favorite by far is Relayer) but to me it’s still the best album of 1972. Yes is my other favorite band along with The Beach Boys (Carl & The Passions would likely make my top ten of 1972 for those Dennis songs, Marcella, and All This Is That).
Deep Purple's "Machine Head". We all came down to Montreux and the rest is hard rock history. The story of the making of the album was as epic as the record itself. Highway Star, Smoke On The Water and Space Truckin' became classics and other tracks like Pictures of Home and Lazy were showcases of the band's brilliant musicianship.
1. Exile on Main Street - Rolling Stones 2. Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie 3. Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull / Honky Chateau - Elton John 5. Fox Trot - Genesis / Talking Book - Stevie Wonder

The top 4 is easy for me with 1. David Bowie- Ziggy Stardust, 2. Yes - Close To The Edge, 3. Genesis - Foxtrot, 4. Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick. #5 is tighter, but I think I might go with Honky Chateau which is my favorite Elton John album very very slightly over Stevie Wonder - Talking Book (which I think would be topped by Innervisions and Songs In The Key Of Life later).

Stevie wonder YES! Music of my Mind had some great ideas on it, Superwoman/Where were you when I needed you? Is just a beautiful odyssey through the mind of Stevie. But Talking Book was where he really solidified a lot of those liquid musical thoughts. Maybe your Baby was unlike anything put out by his contemporaries, while Big Brother is a great African influenced compliment to Superstition. Interesting fact: McCartney included a secret thank you note to Stevie written in Braille on the back of Red Rose Speedway 😄

4- Steely Dan --- Can't Buy a Thrill
3- Neil Young --- Harvest2- Rolling Stones --- Exile on Main Street
1- David Bowie --- The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
1. Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
2. Neil Young - Harvest
3. Elton John - Honky Chateau
4. Deep Purple - Machine Wood
5. David Bowie - The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust
Honorable Mention

Rod Stewart - Never a Dull Moment
The Moody Blues - Seventh Sojourn

5: Close to the Edge-Yes
4: Vol. 4-Black Sabbath

1) Moody Blues - Seventh Sojourn
2) ELP - Trilogy
3) Genesis - Fox Trot
4) Neil Young - Harvest
5) Wishbone Ash - Argus
The lists are getting a lot more varied now which is good.
For me- 5. Transformer by Lou Reed
4. Vol. 4 by Sabbath
3. Harvest by Neil Young
2. Machine Head by Deep Purple
1. The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars by Bowie
A couple of great live albums from 1972 as well with Slade Alive by Slade and down here in Australia we got Live At Sunbury by Billy Thorpe. Love them both.
The albums I rate as 10 (brilliant) and 9 (excellent) are
Saint Dominic's Preview10
Argus 10,
Ziggy Stardust 10,
Exile on Main Street 10,
Close to the Edge 10,
Foxtrot 9,
Machine Head 9,
Can't Buy A Thrill 9,
Roxy Music 9,
1+1 9,
Demons & Wizards 9,
Thick as a Brick 9
The tens effectively make up my top 60 of studio albums over the years, so with five of them, 1972 rates as a terrific year.

3. Octopus (Gentle Giant)
2. Foxtrot (Genesis)
1. Close to the edge (Yes)
Honorable mentions:
Pink Moon (Nick Drake)
Trilogy (ELP)
Argus (Wishbone Ash)
Honky Chateau (Elton John)
Two things I Love:
> the rich eclectic music in Joe's picks. Stevie and Sabbath. Both awesome picks.
> Joe including the astonishing, timeless insanity genius of "Can't Buy A Thrill," one of the goats IMO
One Thing I Don't Love:
> Joe's lack of enthusiasm for David Palmer songs on CBAT. i love his songs on the record, especially "Brooklyn," a hugely underrated pop masterpiece.
1. "Talking Book" by Stevie Wonder
2. "Music Of My Mind" by Stevie Wonder
3. "The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars" by David Bowie
4. "Machine Head" by Deep Purple
5. "Volume 4" by Black Sabbath
Here are my picks for this year, another strong cycle in the single greatest decade for rock (my selections are listed in alphabetical order by title):
--'Eagles' by the Eagles (solid debut by this soon-to-be canonical American band)
--'Eat a Peach' by the Allman Brothers Band (landmark work from these pioneers of southern rock, featuring perhaps my two favorite songs of theirs, "Melissa" and "Blue Sky")
--'Harvest' by Neil Young (Young's single finest LP, an enduring classic)
--'Talking Book' by Stevie Wonder (fantastic album by one of the all-time greats of popular music)
--'You Don't Mess Around with Jim' by Jim Croce (memorable and heartfelt effort from this talented artist)
5. Something/Anything? - Todd Rundgren
4. Straight Up - Badfinger
3. Obscured By Clouds - Pink Floyd (underrated AF!!!!!)
2. Exile On Main Street - Rolling Stones
1. Close To The Edge - Yes
I agree with Jason that CTTE isn’t their best album (my favorite by far is Relayer) but to me it’s still the best album of 1972. Yes is my other favorite band along with The Beach Boys (Carl & The Passions would likely make my top ten of 1972 for those Dennis songs, Marcella, and All This Is That).
Good lists. Bit surprised Paul Simon didn't make the cut on any of them (although reassured to see Exile! :-))
5. Rio Grande Mud - ZZ Top
4. Vol 4 - Black Sabbath
3. Blue Oyster Cult
2. Machine Head - Deep Purple
1. Exile on Main St. - The Rolling Stones
1. Exile on Main Street - Rolling Stones
2. Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie
3. Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull / Honky Chateau - Elton John
5. Fox Trot - Genesis / Talking Book - Stevie Wonder
Honourable mentions:
Hawkwind - Doremi Fasol Latido
Townes Van Zandt - The Late Great Townes Van Zandt
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
The Rolling Sones - Exile on Main St.
Pink Floyd - Obscured By Clouds
5) David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Siders from Mars
4) Lou Reed - Transformer
3) Jacques Brel - Ne me quitte pas
2) Neil Young - Harvest
1) Roxy Music - Roxy Music
1. Paul Simon - Paul Simon
2. Lou Reed - Lou Reed
3. Dr. John's Gumbo - Dr. John
4. Everybody's in Show-Biz - The Kinks
5. Let's Stay Together - Al Green
Great picks, Jason

An amazing year at the very top.

3. David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
2.Yes - Close to the Edge
1. The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
1. Machine Head, Deep Purple
2. All the Young Dudes, Mott the Hoople
3. Back to Front, Gilbert O'Sullivan
4. Islands, King Crimson
5. Transformer, Lou Reed
Interesting choices. I would have picked Saint Dominic's Preview by Van Morrison or Exile On Main Street.
My top five. My top album is Harvest - Neil Young. Runners up are: Allman Brothers - Eat A Peach; Chick Corea - Return to Forever; Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street and Sailin Shoes - Little Feat.

3. Big Star - #1 Record
4. Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
5. Deep Purple - Machine Head

Nice to see all that Progressive Rock on your list. My nod goes to Barrie Barlow's first album with Tull; Thick As A Brick. Cheers!

Stealers Wheel self titled album was full of great tracks. Stuck In The Middle With You was originally a Top Ten hit in both the UK and US, then given a new lease of life being featured in Reservoir Dogs. My friend Bryan and I used to listen repeatedly to Black Sabbath vol 4 with our ears up against the stereo speakers.,... neither of us could believe how heavy the music was but we loved it and wore the grooves out of the record.Iommii is a guitar God and THE RIFFMEISTER
Such a tough year to rank. The most underrated and never talked about album, not of just '72 but EVER Is....'First Base' by Babe Ruth. First time I heard 30 secs of 'Wells Fargo' i was sold. 5 star!!!!!

Don't make me choose - Ziggy, Pink Moon, For the Roses, Roxy, Transformer

Enjoy your various listings. I have two possible suggestions (my apologies if I missed seeing these two categories) 1) the first albums bought with one’s own money. My two are The Best of the Guess Who (1971) and The Doors 13 (1970). Not surprisingly, both are greatest hits collections. 2) albums purchased within days of their release. My two are 27 years apart! Fleetwood Mac Rumors (1977) and Brian Wilson Presents SMILE (2004)
I worked in a music store for 10 years so I’ve purchased probably 1,000 or so CDs on their day of release. -Jason
