    I remember splitting wood by hand as a young man . We dreaded it when Elm showed up in the pile ! However , it kept us warm in the winter .

      I remember when I was a teenager, and my old man made me manually split our firewood for the winter. He would tell me, "The wonderful thing about heating with wood is..... it warms you twice".

    I'm just north of mosquito lake and while it stinks we've lost our elm trees, I really dislike that we've lost all our ash. Talk about a great tree. So many great ash trees all dead. Great firewood for now but they're almost all gone.

    • @ya13ya03
      @ya13ya03 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, that 405 isn't no joke. World class for sure. Elm sucks and it handled it like the champ it is.

    • @brandonhoad9033
      @brandonhoad9033 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Borer wiped out my ash 5 yrs ago but didn't touch the saplings. Letting them grow and hopefully spread . My 12-15 acres of woods was probably at least 60% ash and hedgerows 90%

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have only seen one healthy ash lately and that was in Canfield. They seem to be all gone. Elms are out there but you have to look. The big tree at the Cortland Napa is an elm. The one outside Dollar General at the lake is a nice one. Southington has a HUGE nice one on their square

    Good morning Joe,
    That was very interesting to watch. I've split a lot of elm and it can be awkward but it makes top quality firewood.
    Just an observation, the knives on the Japa perfect split are probably half the thickness of some on competitors machines I've seen,which are to me, way too thick and cause wood to jam or flip over on the more open wedges.
    The knives on my machine ( which I made myself as the originals were junk) are only 8mm thick. I keep them sharp and I've never bent or broken one yet.
    This is a huge advantage and tells me Japa have done a great job in designing their machines.
    Keep splitting 🇬🇧

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Paul. The knives work very good. They seem to be keeping their edge prett good too.

    I never had difficulty with piss elm, splitting with sledge/wedges or 16 hp splitter. Cut & split trees with 36" base or larger. Modern Elm does not grow as large in diameter before mother nature kill it, but it burns like its counterpart of the 1950's. Great BTU's & appetite from loading unto trailer & processing same. Too bad it is disappearing like Ash, Ironwood & Beech Trees.

    A friend of mine from Minnesota once told me, “elm doesn’t really split by hand till about -20F. Then not very well. “. Not gonna try to argue with him. My old gas hydraulic splitter gets a good workout every time I split some.

    Have you ever split hickory on your 405? I've have hand split hickory many time's and it is one of the hardest wood to split even on my 35 ton log splitter. The next hardest wood is hedge it's a very hard wood. Hedge is so hard it like a rock. Hand splitting hedge wood takes hours to split with wedges. Even my 35 ton log split has a very hard time splitting the hedge wood. So I challenge you and you 405 to split hickory and hedge if y'all have hickory and hedge in Ohio.

  • @rodneydufrain3623

    I don't feel that elm is as tough of wood to split as people think. The first time I broke the wedge on my Turner mills processor was with a stringy ash but log. The second time was a hard maple but log. I agree elm is tough stuff when it's tree service wood. A small elm like you had that's just like any other stick of log length firewood.

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems to be stringy regardless. I should have done a maul on one to show.

    Is there a noticable difference in types of Elm for splitting? I know of red and white for sure but I think there's a yellow as well. Ours in Wisconsin is normally much rougher when split (never tried it with a 405 though) i think we have red and white here, just my curiosity.

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know about that. I have only dealt with the American Elm. I saw a Chinese elm in a arboretum once and some type of elm in Finland but I can't distinguish between the others.

    The 405 was effective on the elm, you proved it about, what, 600 times! I don't think there is a perfect wood processor. There's always somethin' not quite right about all of them. I don't like the enclosure door. I do like the the hold down clamp with the rollers that bite the wood. Don't like the log infeed. Do like the speed and power of the splitter ram. Don't like the....

    I would give a guy down the street that sold fire wood all my elm. Him and his dad built a splitter with a 6 inch ram out of a trash truck. I beam look like a bridge beam lol had a winch (hand crank) I had a agreement with him that if he wanted it he had to take good bad and ugly. So that is why the ole man built the splitter so he could split them big ole y s and knots.he wood bring a 40 foot gooseneck and man did I load him down his dad would get so mad at me but oh well. That splitter had a cycle that took about 3 minutes just to come back lol. Even that crazy thing wouldn’t split those red elm. Now u have the easy elm we call it white elm and it splits pretty easy but if u get some red cedar elm just toss it in the fire pit. Ole Herald bell was his name and he sold the crap out of it and mix it up with that junk cotton wood slab stuff 5 inches of bark and 3 wood. Cheap wood that takes a lot to produce. Poore people have poore ways

    Here in the U.K. back in the day It was traditional to use Elm for coffins, those days are gone. However it is a tough timber although our Elm trees were also depleted with the D.E.D.

    Hi Joe. That box wedge did a great job. I’m sure the super splitter is happy it won’t have to resplit that stuff.
    On another note, I saw a classic example of an up sale. Sheetz has a promo going, buy 2 Dr. Pepper 20oz bottles and get 2 free hotdogs. I figured you might like this promo. Ha ha. Have a great day 👍🏻!

    Great video…your really funny!…I got to give it up to that machine, it does look like it’s built cheaply with the thin gauge steel and welds, but it processed rather quick and smooth, I like the little shaker deck before it hits the conveyor! Would like to know how many cords it produces in a 4 or 8 hour run.

      It split really nice in my box store splitter. I was rather surprised.
      I have to store it down wind from the house because it makes it smell like a family of cats are living under the porch peeing in the flower bed.
      I like the smell of oak though.

    Hey Joe, we have a lot of Elm in Wisconsin, but it only grows so large and then dies standing. I can wager you will find an Elm log that gives the 405 fits, especially if there are knots.
