On the marge of the last auction held by Phillips in Geneva took place a very interesting exhibition showcasing examples of what independent watchmaking is all about. Amazing timepieces were put on display, from the early works of some great names of this scene to their latest creations, this was a nice mix to enjoy. There was also an inspiring panel discussion with no less than Philippe Dufour, Stephen Forsey, François-Paul Journe, Roger Smith, Max Busser and the wife of late Gerald Genta!
But what I found particularly interesting was the message that such an endeavour carries; true value stands in some meaningful vintage watches, though sometimes prices witnessed for severely bruised out watches can be questionable, but its contemporary counterpart stands with these independent watchmakers.
And by independent, I believe the term can be slightly confusing, as Rolex is naturally independent, but let's say more small brands, small volumes and total dedication to the art of watchmaking where the hand of watchmakers and artisans are at the center of these fine timepieces.

Great! Very glad to hear Derek Pratt mentioned and to see the oval pocket watch, the most beautiful one in the video in my opinion. More of this type of thing please!

Marc, thank you for continually shining a light on independent watch makers. These incredible people represent the heart and essence of watchmaking. It's so important to remind people that there is so much more to watches, and watchmaking, than large corporate names and mass production.

I registered for that auction with Phillips and it was a great experience. I did fancy a Vacheron Constantin but that went above the estimate and more than I would pay. All in all a good auction and a real lesson in watch brands and current prices

These watches are amazing really high end work. I wonder what they cost? I have a Charles Frodsham and Dent Chronometer pocket watches. They where made in 1800-1801 period. I love these super high end quality low production watches . I have two pocket watches specially made for the timing competition back in 1800-01 time. Just need to find the right case to finish up the one watch. Love to figure out what the details of the competition showed on my two pocket watches. One day I would really like to see a John Harrison marine chronometer in person. My pet favorite pocket watch is a Swiss made 1772 dated watch as a presentation watch to a soldier who fought in the American rev war. It would of been a perfect watch for the navy use.

Time is a fascination. Man can create infinite ways to measure it in various forms of accuracy. However, we cannot change it, alter it, add to it, stop it, delete it or in any way do anything about it. Time is immutable, permanent, progressive and unchanging. As kids we want it to speed up. But then as we age, we wish it would slow down. And when we find we are running out of it, we want more of it. Time is a fascination.

Daniels himself said that he was the greatest living watchmaker. Maybe he was - but only after Derek Pratt had died. Unlike Daniels, Derek was a humble man who did not have his own 'brand' or marketing skills but whose work was far superior.
