Thank you.
You took the time & effort to share your knowledge with us, even though, clearly this machine was maybe not your first choice.
Dropweight machines are the routine point of entry for most stringers, people like you help the people coming behind you.
We all stand on the shoulders of people before us, please be nice to those who share...
Thank you for this video. Your the only youtuber that explained how to string on this machine. 👍
I've watched all of your stringing videos and while I can afford an electronic stringer, I don't need that much kit and prefer the smaller profile. Watching them has given me the confidence to start stringing my own stuff now that I'm getting back into tennis. Thanks for the content!
+1 same
@@dex5317 and I ended up buying the electronic attachment for my machine..hahahaha
Good instructional video! Helped me successfully string my first racquet- many thanks !
Great video, I should have watched your video first. I've snapped string on my first attempt on a second hand weight stringer.
Thanks for the nice video, greatly appreciate the effort! Although I have a different drop weight machine, this video really gave me the much better understanding of how should the tension be achieved with the drop weight
Thank you so much! Your video is the best on TH-cam for the Gamma stringer! I appreciate your well-constructed, 40+-minute video 👏
thanks helped me to string my first racket ever - I used the "Gamma Progression 602 FC Pro" that I just bought. It took me almost 3h :D Also, I have a 18x20 pattern so I had to redo the mains because strings were too short haha Thanks anyway very helpfull
Thank you for letting me experience the pain of a drop weight.
Thank you for a great video.
Very informative video. Thanks.
Great video. Do you have any tip to use 10% plus weight during the knot? I mean, was wondering to add a specific weight to help during the knot movement
When the bar is above horizontal (14:18), the tension is LESS than desired. (Consider what the tension is when nearly vertical if this is confusing.)
Agreed. I believe it is less when the bar is either above or below horizontal. I think he meant it'd be over-tensioned if you were to force the bar down to horizontal.
Superb video. Thanks. I would like to note that you said not to tie-off the cross to a main string, however my racket (2018 Pure Aero) specifies the tie-off at one of the mains.
I can see the weight creeping below horizontal. Would you normally allow it to stretch out and then adjust the drop weight again until horizontal?
Very good thanks a lot
although cutting one string at a time may be best if you have one or two rackets, using strong scissors or garden shears may provide an alternative that results in less movements and wear on your muscles... just a thought.
You seem like a good stringer. How long does it take you to string a racquet using a dropweight if you are going at normal speed and not speaking?
Wrong way, You should place the first clamp on the center of the string. problem solved. I think this is a decent machine. just needs more labor but its pretty accurate. crank one is spring tension need to keep on eye on. electric one is always less tension but very convenient.
Many people say that Electric stringer Is more precise than manual. What you think about the differences? I Will string 3/4 rackets in a month..
I notice after the first tension is applied, when you release the drop weight, the clamping arm moves and releases tension. 11:50. I am considering buying a machine and this makes me wonder about the reliability of this particular model.
Did you go with a drop weight stringer? If so, would you recommend it? If not, did you go with something else?
@@johncharles2357 yes I did. I got the alpha pioneer dc. I think it does a great job if your looking for a drop weight stringer. About $600.
great video
great video, tnx for information, plz can you tell me how much the weight with kilogramme the weight cylindre. (the weight cylindre weight ??)
Awesome video, A++
I know it's an old video, but anyone run into the problem when doing the crosses the levers that locks the base of the clamps run into each other. This happens when you’re about 2/3 of the way thru with the crosses. It's when you can no longer swivel the base of the clamps away from each other, because the lever starts hitting the vertical column at each end that connects the base of the machine to the top mounts. Unless I’m doing something wrong, it makes you wonder why couldn’t they make the lever shorter.
Good vid…def covered the basics of the techniques. I’ve read all the comments and beings I’ve never strung a racquet, this certainly covered the basics well. I’m wanting to purchase a drop-weight stringing machine but don’t know which machine is better for relatively the same price…Gamma Progression II 602FC or the Gamma X-6FC model? Or any other model machine even if different mfg’r, near the same price point as the two I mentioned. I’m getting back into tennis after quite a hiatus and would like to string my own racquets as well as friends racquets. Kill some time after work anyhow and I’ve always wanted to learn how to string.
hello i have a similar machine, but I'm getting sore pain in my left shoulder after stringing do you have any suggestions for avoiding that,
the clip bented, thats one part of lose of tension and the swinging of the frame so keep it locked up and steady
retensioning with cause string wareout so its not gonna hold the prefered tension and it will cause too stretch more
Hey, I'm a novice stringer, & I bought a used gamma progression 2 pt mount stringing machine on ebay. The numbers on 1 side of the drop weight bar go up to 27 & the numbers on the other side of the drop weight bar go up to 40. How am I supposed to string my racket at 55 lbs?
Is it in kilograms?
@@Df994_ Tysm4 your follow up:) I was fortunately able to figure it all out. It turns out I had very bad lighting and under much better lighting I was able to see the numbers in lbs:)
Great video. Very helpful. I use a super old - way more basic machine than this one - and I usually give a few extra pounds in tension to account for tension loss. Also, when you say restring a few times A WEEK, are you playing John Isner or JM Del Potro forehands or something?!
most high level players utr 10 and above (ntrp 5.0+) break their strings every 3ish days.
How do you set the weight on this machine? Do you put the top or bottom of the cylinder on the weight marker?
bottom, or the end closest to the stringer
Hey I really like this video, I think it's better than some of the drop weight tutorials out there. Quick question though, if I'm using flying clamps, would I need to pull tension for the first starting mains?
Yes, you should tension all the strings. I like to use a starting clamp down at the throat on my 16 mains racket, protecting the frame with a piece of leather around the string on the outside of the frame. I pull two strings through and then clamp with my flying clamp down by the throat. I do two more stings one at a time on that side (right side) of the racket. Then I come back and deal with the starting clamp. I grab the string with the gripper and pull some tension on it, then remove the starting clamp and flying clamp, and continue ratcheting up till It's level or as close as I can get, then re-clamp with the flying clamp, and then continue on that side (left side) of the racket. Once I've got three strings tensioned and clamped on each side, then I alternate till I'm done, and then do my knots.
Hey Brian! When choosing a tension (7'00"), do you align the tension with the top of the dropweight cylinder or the bottom of the dropweight cylinder?
The number aligns underneath it, i.e. closer to the fulcrum.
Awsome Video Brian, Thank you so much, Kindly I got a pros pro drop weight, I bought it second hand, any advice about the maintenance? Kindest Regards
Adrian
Honestly the tensioning system should be rock solid forever. Just be sure to watch for rust that's probably the number one killer. I dust my machine at the end of every day (mainly because I dont want dust/dirt) damaging the string) and then once a week I'll rub it down with a little bit of rubbing alcohol... clamps and tension head. The fact that your getting it second hand means you probably don't need any grease or lube (WD-40) like you sometimes need at the star.
@@brianbollmantennis thank you so much Brian, do you mind if I ask you if you know how to remove the scratches on the release clamp base, my got few, i bought it second hand, i think the machine might need maintenance or service, no problem idea where to start and what materials use, thank you in advance, cheers Adrian
Can you take the drop weight off?
I was considering buying this machine til I saw how you have to use the dropweight with all those clicks... YIKES. Klippermate is quicker than that
the numbers on my machine (pro's pro pioneer 1) only go up to 16kg/37lbs, how could i use it to string a tennis racket? i string badminton rackets fine
Tennis rackets need at least about 20 kilos to function, some people even go up to 27 kilos or more. 16 kilos are definitely not enough, you'd have to increase the weight.
Does a tennis racket even fit in there?
EDIT: I just found out that some pros play with a string tension of 13 kilos or lower, so my comment was propably bullshit. But I don't know anyone personally that plays with 21 kilos or less.
@@SomeoneYouKnow2671 You are right. A tennis racket should be stringed with at least 18-20 kilos. But most play with 22 - 25 kilos. But no pro player play with 13 kilos.
@@juliusrokkjr1871 It's pretty rare, but some seemingly do. Or did.
In 2009, Filipo Volandri played the French Open with a string tension of about 10 kg.
In 2011, Leonardo Azarro played the Australian Open with a string tension of 13.6 kg.
These players are by no means the very best of the best, but it seems that a racket with incredibly low string tension can be good enough for a spot in the rankings.
@@SomeoneYouKnow2671 it does fit. hm, guess gotta find a way to add more weight to it somehow, thank you
Good video, but i think you did string on left side excessively in the beginning, it will be broken by too many weight, one by one is the best
I own a much cheaper drop weight machine. If I had that Progression II, I wouldn´t have been complaninig (at all!) as much as you did in this video. Hahaha. Cheers!
I noticed you didn’t use a starting pin, is this normal?
He doesn't need to on this machine because it has its clamps fixed to the machine below...thus they can grab hold of one string at a time.
I have a Klippermate machine that uses "flying" clamps so yes you have to use the start pin after tensioning the first main.
What's the best machine under $1500?
Probably the Neos 1000 depending on your needs. That video is coming next week.
Why are you dropping the weight the way you are doing ? In another youtube video he starts the weight at horizontal and then drops the weight to the table, what’s the difference?
Personal preference.... it's just the way I feel comfortable doing it since I don't really use a drop weight irl... from horizontal would give you better control likely... you may not need nearly the same number of clicks I need.
The scale is calibrated to be accurate with a horizontal bar. Anything not horizontal will be less than indicated. (It's just the way the physics work out.)
When doing the crosses, why do one ahead? What's the benefit of that?
Easier to weave because the mains are already lifted/lowered the right direction.
Nobody see ? The moment after you use the clamp to 'catch' that tension and then when you remove the weight the clamp move a Little bit
I mean IT repeats every time , it s ok ?
It's ok for it to move a little... typically if it doesn't move at all you have it too tight and are liable to crush the string a bit.
It’s called drawback and it’s normal. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a machine that didn’t have at least a little drawback. And it’s completely unrelated to how tightly the clamp clamps the string.
Can you also string with a dropweight for like more professional Tennis players 😅
most professionals would not like a drop weight because of how inaccurate it can be
Although pros can afford to restring every day, for the common folk I think a drop weight can have the advantage of kind of pre-stretching the strings, so you have less tension loss after you've strung the racket, and don't need to restring as often.
@@doremi9 you can prestretch strings without any machine and most electronic machines will have a prestretch option
@@SkyreeXScalabar This is true. What I find is if you take your time with a drop weight machine it sort of does that for you. This advantage is more compared to a lockout machine rather than an advanced electronic one. However, as you say you can pre-stretch separately for a lockout machine.
@@doremi9 I know a drop weight is constant pull but how does it prestretch?
You can get good quality stringing job on any stringing machine, drop weight to electronic. The quality of the string job is from the stringer. I see so many flaws in his stringing techniques and procedures. With that said, I would not trust any stringing job from this guy in this video regardless of what stringing machine he uses.
What are the concerning errors?
It's quite evident that you do not have much experience with drop weights or at least for a very long time. You are struggling and should not be doing a drop weight tutorial. Please leave this to those who are much more familiar with this type of stringer.
Instead of chirping from the sideline, how about tell everyone what the errors are? Or even better: there is a severe dearth of drop-weight tutorials how about dropping one yourself that shows your preferred method?
