- The Onimusha games pushed several aspects of actions games forward. The gameplay and storytelling elements in particular were above and beyond most of its competitors in the genre. So, with so many dedicated fans who still talk about it, and such a consistent track record of great games, why have we gone over ten years without a new one? Or even an HD remaster? What the hell happened to Onimusha?

I been begging for a onimusha hd collection for the longest times sadly not to many ppl are petitioning for it it's one of my fav series of all time.
Its truly a mystery as to why they never did that
Yeah a Onimusha hd collection would be good
even if it was the first 3 only
and if they port it for PS4, the Xbone, and PC.
I would buy any of these ports, if they are well made ports.
(I will never forget Silent Hill HD....bad ports)
Or something like a remade/remake/remastered
something like the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy did.
At least the first Onimusha game, as that version you can
give people both versions the Warlords and the Genma version
and a remix of both with new features and outfits and weapons.

Yeah I think Capcom is playing it safe abit
kinda any other company now a days they stay with one or two games
they know would make them money, until it gets dull.
As I know back in the old days, they got B and C teams with little budgets
to create many different type of games and see if they stick and sell well.
And some of those B and C games are fun, better or became good enough as triple A titles.
I miss TimeSplitters too... that would be an easy HD port as well.
The first game didn't really have a story mode,
so they can make first game play like an expansion pack
just add in the maps and characters
from the first game to the TimeSplitters 2 and 3 for HD or Remake.

Legacy of Kain, Syphon Filter, Tenchu and Onimusha. 4 game series' that need to come back or at the very least get remade/remastered.

Well Legacy of Kain Dark Prophecy and Legacy of Kain Dead Sun were cancelled, but you never know.
Onimusha 3 still has one of the best intro's EVER.
3 years since your comment and that's still true. One of the most badass intros to a videogame i have ever seen. I really hope they remaster Onimusha 3 as well, but since it's been 3 years and nothing so far, it's very unlikely i think.
Onimusha 3 was my first RPG game and till now its has the best storyline for me

14 years later I'm still amazed by that opening cinematic from Onimusha 3. I go back and re-watch it every couple years. It's epic. It was ahead of it's time and it still holds up today. Last time my old friend was in town we talked about it lol. Had to pull it up on TH-cam and watch it. Still amazing!!
Onimusha was/is my favorite Capcom IP. I always wondered why they didn't make more.

That was so tough for me as a kid, I had to ask my dad to buy the strategy guide for the game just for that one part. It had florite locations too, and pictures of Kaede which I really liked, so that was nice. Playing it again as an adult with the remaster, that puzzle wasn't even close to being an issue. XD

Onimusha 3 and 4 are still some of my favorite games of all time.
And just like that. Onimusha is back baby. Capcom has been on a roll. I definitely see capcom planning to make a new onimisha with the recent emergence of samurai games (Sekiro, Nioh, Ghosts of Tsushima). Man oh man. Just imagine a new onimisha using the same RE engine that resident evil 2 and dmc5 uses.
I would like to see them make a new game using the same engine they used for the Deep Down gameplay. Those original Deep down videos looked so awesome with the Panta Rhei engine.
I don't think samurai themed games went anywhere. The games that have been coming out all these years probably haven't been your cup of tea or you simply haven't heard of them.
Capcom not only need to revive Onimusha but Dino Crisis as well... sigh

I must be honest, i have no idea how a remake of dino crisis would be received by gamers in this era and age but i'm glad that at least resident evil still lives since it's my favorite series from capcom.

I heard it got remastered and nobody bought the remaster so no. And we won't ever get remasters of the sequels if that wasn't obvious already.
i loved all onimusha. but theres no way in hell im going to pay for a port that ive played religiously back when it came out. if capcom were serious, they wouldv made onimusha 5. look at ace combat from bandai/namco, it came back full force with a game for the current gen

I'm just so happy that I got to spend my early teenage years during its time. Gaming back in the PS2 era had so much soul. Capcom and Square-enix were the kings of kings back then. BTW my favorite in the franchise is Onimusha 2. I loved the interactive gameplay as you explore the village for side missions. It's almost immersive. But all of the installments were in top of the game.

I used the plot of this game for a creative story in primary 5 so I would've been like 10. My parents got called in for what I thought was exceptional storytelling, turns out the school thought I was troubled for writing about such things. Explained it was just a game and all was good. Looking back not the best thing to write about at any school never mind a catholic school.
Isn't that funny? School wants you to be creative, but when you start getting a little too creative they call you or your parents in because they think "you're troubled." And then the same people go home and watch movies where people are being gleefully slaughtered by the dozens, but that doesn't raise any alarm bells.
Also reminds me of a game called Parysite Eve 1& 2. Would love to see an up to date sequel of Onimusha & Parysite Eve, that was like back in the late 90's.

Since it was based on resident evil of course there would be some scary and creepy moments in these games. That whole first level of Onimusha 2 was creep af. The grey sky with rain, dead bodies around, lots of enemies and the ”Jubei...Juuuuubei*

Yep, I was 7 years old when I got Resident Evil 1 on PS1. My uncle bought it for me, and I've never been so scared in my life. Despite the fact that I was scared, I just couldn't look away, and couldn't stop playing. Eventually, I was having nightmares every night and then my Mum took the game away from me and traded it in, haha. If she didn't take it, I would have carried on torturing myself. I still engage in this behaviour to this day. Playing RE1 as a 7 year old really represented the birth of me, as a life-long horror nerd. I love being scared hehe....
I think Onimusha would work better with a horror tone than just a hack and slash. Not saying survival horror as a genre, just lookong and feeling creepy.
I remember parrying At the exact right moment and then dishing out a critical hit this was one of the most satisfying feelings in games ever

man, i still remember how fan the earth hammer was, specially with it making the screen shake with every attack. so much fun.
also, nothing beats offering the love potion to Eikei and Saiga, 2 completely diferent reactions, and both equally hilarious.
These games were so much better than Nioh / Dark Souls / etc. The character interactions in Onimusha 2 were so fantastic. Every one of them were so memorable. BRING ONIMUSHA BACK!

Keiji Inafune happened. He slammed Japanese video games industry which led Capcom to outsourced their games to Western developer that ultimately made mediocre to shitty games.

3 is my personal favorite but 4 had the best story and the best music. I personally thought 4 was an EPIC conclusion to the series! However, there were two things that always bugged me in 4:
1. Jubei (the main hero from 2) already being old enough to be a grandfather when it's only been over 20 years from 2 to 4. Jubei would only be in his 40s by the time of 4! So they either should have made Jubei simply be Jubei's (girl from 4) FATHER or had 4 take place all the way to the late 1600s or early 1610s. Jubei by then would be old enough and a lot more believable (I might add) as a grandfather.
2. (this one bugged me the MOST) Fortinbras being trapped in the Omen Star AGES before the first game all the way until the end of 4. Now if Fortinbras was trapped in that Omen Star all that time, why did Samanosuke fight him at the end of 1 if he was supposed to be in that Omen Star?! Seems like a retcon to me. Might I add that 4 neglects to mention anything about Fortinbras being present during the events of 1.
There are 3 other things I don't get about 4: what was the purpose of the Demon Seed a.k.a. "Genma Seed" (the little Fortinbras fetus) if the Omen Star already had Fortinbras returning on his own? And, when Soki fought Fortinbras one on one was that the real one or just Munenori fused with the matured Fortinbras fetus? Lastly, why did Munenori try to fight the human Fortinbras? Please forgive the length of my rant but I never understood these things about 4! 😯
I just said this earlier today, if Sony would add the classic Onimusha games to it's PS2 on PS4 library that would be be so satisfying.

The most special thing about Onimusha's gameplay is that you can feel the weight of your slashes each time your attacks connect... it's almost satisfying really. This was my first game along with Tekken Tagand FFX when I got it in 2002 (I was 13).
The first time I played Onimusha 2 and felt the vibration of the controller as I slashed the Genma soldiers and stabbed one I knocked on the ground...man that shit left an impression on me.
I would definitely love a hd remastered collection or a new onimusha :)

All of the 4 games were fucking awesome. 4 being my absolute favorite just for how goddamn epic of a journey it was.
The ending for Onimusha 4 was definitely like a final closing I'd say. If a mainline canonical Oni 5 were to come out, I would be interested to see how they would start it off after 4's ending really.
Nioh for me at least is Onimusha 5 for now, it's a completely different company of people working on it, & feels like Dark Souls, but honestly it feels like Onimusha to me in a lot of ways. It has things in common here & there.
Overall I think right now I'm just hoping Capcom will show Devil May Cry 5 this upcoming E3 for now.

4 is amazing. I felt that the story telling was better. It was like a movie. i really got a sense of fantasy from it. The others seemed like a dark horror action. Plus the ending was amazing.
DMC5 was awesome. I’ve never played onimusha. I’m thinking of giving the remaster a shot!
As of today sept 22nd 2023 Capcom has only released an HD version of Onimusha 1 a few years ago, they need to do a remake with this franchise like they did with basically every RE main game
It real deal needs an HDRemake. First game on PS2 I got was Onimusha Warlords. These games were awesome.
I was absolutely enthralled by the Onimusha series, started playing it when I was about 10 or so, now 32.
The whole series had its own vibe and was a mix of multiple genres. Had a dark souls feel to it, but the mysteries and puzzles to change up gameplay, was an immersive experience and really captured that "grim-dark" vibe.
Please... One day?..... Maybe?...... 😞
I pray and hope that they make the fith one. I can't tell you how long I've been waiting. Well as much as every one else. But these series. Onimusha is my favorite and it always will be. I grew up playing these. And I would love it to be a thing. The only one I haven't played is the blade warriors one. I wish I could find it. Also I keep coming back to play these. Couldn't find 3 for a few years. And I'm going through it on hard now... I don't know about trying critical. That shit pisses me off.
I owe Onimusha so much. I rented the first game and it had a demo of Devil May Cry. That totally changed me into a gamer, but the Onimusha series as a whole became one of my favorites. Absolutely agree that a lack of an HD package is crazy after all of these years. Would absolutely buy it and play the ever living shit out of them.
A new onimusha is coming i can feel it... besides of all the rumors running about... capcom needs to make a small studio so they can start bringing life to old school ips indie style... so if they sell well (being good games ofcourse) they can put a big budget for revitalizing them in a big scale...

Lately Ono-San really has shown interests in bringing the franchise back for a while now, but right now he's being focusing his efforts to Street Fighter V Arcade Edition. Capcom should do all 3 Onimusha and Dawn of Dreams HD Remastered to keep us busy until Ono-San finally gets the chance to bring the franchise to modern consoles. I really love the series and I hope Ono-San do indeed resurrect the series.

I kept my Onimusha 3 ps2 game even tho I no longer have a Ps2... That's how much I loved that game.. Im here in 2019 just browsing for hope for some type of Onimusha game.. At least give us a mobile version lol

I've watched that onimusha 3 intro scene probably a hundred times because it's so badass. That demon he's fighting is the final stage of the demon world (can't remember exactly what that place is called) in onimusha 4

I grew up playing those games. I still remember when I accidentally saved over my older brother's game in the first Onimusha. He was at the end too!!! I have some fond memories of these games.

onimusha is one of the main inspiration for Souls. All of it was in there, in a PS2 early 2000's game, but people aren't prepared for that discussion.

I don't want Capcom to do a thing to Onimusha. Just remaster 1-4 and Blade Warriors in HD, and re-release them all together as part of a "Collector's Edition". MAYBE make Blade Warriors online multiplayer.

I loved the Onimusha series, it was just different compared to the Western based games.
Onimusha 1 was the game that got me into gaming. The series and that game specifically hold a dear place in my heart. I hope it returns.
It also has licencing issue's because of likeness of characters "being actors" Capcom doesn't wanna kick out the $ to pay actor's if they did a remaster or remake.

I agree, they can redesign the character models though.
That wouldn't work for the pre-rendered cutscenes which they have no way to edit. Yes, they can edit the real time in game models however they're still stuck with the pre-rendered cutscenes which they can't edit in the same way.

This is a good sign honestly. After more than 10 years of no word about this series, and complete skip of the last generation, this can def. mean that Capcom is planning something again with the series.
This is why I still have my PS2 set up with all the Onimusha series. Back when the early 2000s Capcom were awesome........
A new Onimusha game would be amazing!!! Same with KOTOR 3, Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen, Silent Hill or Jade Empire...!
Gemma Onimusha was the first game I played for the Xbox. I was 8. I’ve loved the series ever since.
Onimusha 3 was best it had great storyline graphics and characters loved it so much!
Onimusha 3 intro was ahead of his time.
Capcom and Konami are my childhood; they gave me great memories and I can still play their old library but I've become accustomed to the disappointment. It ended alright; let it rest. Do you want what happened to DMC to happen to Onimusha? They can't even take care of Megaman properly; it scares me what they would do to Onimusha.

No doubt; those are the things we love and we should just appreciate and replay them. I know they're capable but companies seem to never want to put in the effort and make something great if it won't sell and production costs are so high these days. It doesn't seem worth it on their end; on the other hand they shouldn't be working on or releasing things that suck and are half assed like poorly ported compilations and such.
That doesn´t need to be the case. They can also create a Remastered Collection like they did with DMC 1, 2 and 3.
Some of the ports especially the latter ones on PC weren’t that great but yeah that’s true. Although how many times are you willing to buy the same game? I have plenty of friends who bought various games on different platforms or when compilations came out.
It can help catch their attention but if they sell well do you really think they’ll work on a remake/remaster or a new entry? It could happen but it’s not guaranteed.

Onimusha: Dawn of dreams is my favourite, I have the 3rd one too. Loved them.
I am extremely happy with the remastered Onimusha 1 and got it both on Steam and PS5.
I would be VERY happy if they did that with Onimusha 2 as well, just upscale the graphics resolution, no need to remake it ( would be nice too )
Or at least release it on Playstation premium’s classics, one can literally only play Onimusha 2 and later on a PS2 or emulator

capcom should do an hd collection or remastered for current gen like they did with devil may cry, i'm pretty sure it'll be a comercial success and maybe it'll drag new fans for the franchise and the possibility to make a new game for this marvelous, long forgotten serie that still remains on fan's hearts

The first Onimusha jumpstarted my fascination on Japanese history specifically on Oda Nobunaga and the Sengoku period. I was 12 when I first played it in the early 2000s. It sucks that there was no follow up to Dawn of dreams.

This game gave me nightmares when I was 8 years old. Warlords. The big red demon. I went on to beat that game and loved the entire story
Warlords scared the shit out of me and last year when they released the remastered on the switch I ended up beating it. I’ve beat the 3rd and 4th game and never played the 2nd. Been wanting a remaster or a remake for a while
